PAULDING – The crowd was merry and the lights were bright on Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, for the annual Merry and Bright Christmas Parade and tree lighting in Paulding.

Hundreds of spectators lined Main and Jackson streets to watch the half-hour parade, which featured many lighted floats and ended with the arrival of Santa Claus. The unusually mild weather was perfect for the event.

The number of parade entries almost doubled from last year.

The Paulding VFW Color Guard and members of the Paulding High School band also participated.

Prior to the parade, a tree lighting was held in Herb Monroe Community Park. This year, a star was added to the top of the 20-foot tree.

Other trees in the park, as well as several on the courthouse lawn, have been decorated for the season.

Santa visited with children after the parade. A long line of families waited their turn to talk with St. Nick. If you missed him, don’t worry – additional Santa House hours are Dec. 2 from 1-3 p.m. and Dec. 16, 17 and 20 from 5-7 p.m. A “Santa Letters” mailbox also awaits kids’ Christmas wishes.

Tuesday evening also featured a DJ playing holiday favorites, refreshments and some caroling.

The parade was organized by Paulding Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Chamber and the Merry and Bright Committee.

Downtown should be busy again the next two Saturdays, Dec. 2 and 9, as the chamber, Friends of the Chamber and the Downtown Revitalization Committee host Shop the Square both days from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (Please see related story.)
