The temperature at the time of the story had been hovering around -35° for a time and sportsmen had been enjoying the ice fishing. In their area, there are many lakes and ice fishing is a favored sport. The sportsmen move their fish houses far out on the frozen surfaces and have a grand time catching those chilly creatures while keeping warm and snug in their little huts.
