The promise of spring

HOMESPUN  By Jim Langham

The word is the same all around these days. The melting snows, sunshine and longer days are beginning to turn the hearts of the people from a sense of endless winter to the hope of springtime. One checkout lady in an area grocery store made the comment, “Finally, I’m starting to come around. This winter really had me whipped.”

While this past winter hasn’t been the worst I recall in six decades, it has been persistent and wearing. Recently, I was looking through some journal writing and I discovered that in a springtime several years ago I was looking for the same hope that my heart has been looking forward to with anticipation of this spring. I had written how that winter had seemed long and gray, like it would never end.
