A Penny For Your Thoughts

By Nancy Whitaker

When I think of pennies, I think of my mom. She was always looking for pennies, giving people pennies and hiding pennies in places she visited. Everyone knows that the penny doesn’t have much value and it would take 125 pennies to even buy a soda, but nonetheless, she loved pennies.

Of course the lowly penny has been around since 1787, was designed by Ben Franklin and was made of pure copper. The Lincoln penny design goes back to 1909 and commemorated Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday. The penny was the first coin to feature the face of a president.
