Most of us are creatures of habit – do something a few times and we find ourselves doing it over and over again. Linda has just returned home from Florida where she spent three months enjoying not doing much in the way of household chores. Walking in the door at home and feeling pangs of hunger, she seated herself at the kitchen table and waited, and waited, and waited. No one came to take her order!

Of course they didn’t. She had found herself to be a creature of habit after eating out most of her meals all winter.

Justine is 7 years old and attends Sunday School with her sister and mother. Amy was teaching the class how to say the Lord’s Prayer in sign language. Mother and daughter were talking about the lesson the next day.

Justine said, “I don’t want to upset God or anything, Mom, but that prayer is really boring.”

Readers of the book The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio will understand how happy we were to have visitors last week – Betsy and Bruce Ryan, two of the main characters in the book and the movie. Bruce is moving to northern Colorado and Betsy continues enjoying life in upper New York State.

Dick Waring, a nephew, and the husband of Susan Waring who died recently, sent us a copy of Jean Wannemacher Geist’s newly published book, Only in the Movies. Jean and Susan were both born and raised in Paulding County, and good friends always, having been companions since first grade.

Geist’s book is self-published and the setting is northwest Ohio and of course, Paulding County is mentioned. Jean was a librarian at Bowling Green State University and Susan had been a high school guidance counselor.

A fellow going home relates a story about a congested highway scene of six lanes and vehicles moving from 70 to 80 miles per hour. As they all raced along, a motorcycle appeared behind the trip-relater, gaining on him rapidly and going far above the speed limit. The cycle came even with the car driver and with what appeared to be great talent, did a wheelie, scaring the car riders silly. All vehicles in all lanes continued without damage to anything but nerves.

Jumping out of airplanes and using a parachute to descend to the earth below is a hobby many have taken up just for the fun of it, they will tell you. This story has been making the rounds. Believe it if you will.

A chap has leaped out of the drop plane and pulling the rip cord frantically as he speeds towards the earth below. As he drops, he passes another parachutist on the way UP. He yells as he passes, “Do you know anything about parachutes?” The other fellow flying up says, “NO, but do you know anything about gas stoves?
