The Spice Rack

By Dorotha Schaefer

This story of moss back and/or snapping turtles comes to the Rack from a relative who has often supplied us with interesting stories. He told how the above-mentioned creatures made holes along the bank of Flat Rock Creek at water’s edge.

Those who wanted to catch them reached into the hole, felt around inside and pulled out a turtle. To take it home, the catcher stuffed him into a gunny sack and dragged the creature along the road.

At home a mile away, good old Dad was waiting to finish the job. He cut off the heads of the snapping turtles. To do this, he turned them over on their backs and while they were helpless and stretched out he sliced away the portion that was snapping.
