Reaping fruits of our labor

As days start to slightly shorten and the edge comes off the summer heat, my mind often returns to that part of my aging heart in recall of all of the hard work I remember during August and September It was hard work filled with pride as we began to reap the harvest of hundreds of hours of garden work during the summer.
Recently I drove past the old home place and sized up what I knew once to be our garden. “How could we do that,” I asked myself as I looked at the area which once grew sweet corn, popcorn, red beets, green beans, lima beans, peas, potatoes, melons, cucumbers, radishes, turnips, onions, and sundry other fresh vegetables that provided sustenance for our simple way of life.
I recall once picking red raspberries, black raspberries, strawberries, grapes, jonathan and delicious apples, yellow delicious apples, crabapples, pears, peaches, cherries, sour and sweet, plums and even quince.
