GEO to Host Largest Green Energy Ohio Tour Ever Oct. 1 and 2!

Vantage Career Center One of 260 Sites Across Ohio


COLUMBUS – Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, the public is invited to take the FREE “Green Energy Ohio Tour” and network with people using renewable energy, energy efficiency and green design.  Over 260 open house sites in 137 communities across the state have registered in what will be the largest tour yet. Fifty-one counties are represented in this year’s tour as are an incredibly diverse array of renewable energies. According to the Ohio Energy Resources Division, a majority of sites on this tour have created 764 jobs and retained an additional 1146 jobs.


Vantage Career Center in Van Wert will be a host site, with a presentation at 1:30 pm about the upcoming Adult Education Alternative Energy Academy and wind turbine information from an Iberdrola Renewables representative.   Following the presentations, guests will be given county maps for “self-guided” tours with highlighted routes for the best viewing of the wind turbines in Van Wert and Paulding counties.

The "Green Energy Ohio Tour" tour features not only solar, but tour sites with wind, energy efficiency, biomass and other green energy technologies.  This FREE statewide event on Oct. 1 and 2 provides the unique opportunity for people to visit hundreds of open house sites and talk with owners living and working with clean energy technologies, including solar electric (202), solar thermal (47), wind (35), geothermal (40), passive solar (37), LEED (17), Energy Star (12), Biomass (15), and energy efficient features (74).


Learn how friends and neighbors are combating rising energy costs, slashing utility bills, utilizing incentives and tax credits. Learn about opportunities for all Ohioans to invest in a brighter, cleaner future by joining Green Energy Ohio during the 9th Annual Green Energy Ohio Tour, Saturday and Sunday,  Oct. 1 and 2.


In its 11th year, GEO is a nonprofit organization promoting economically and environmentally sustainable energy policies and practices in Ohio. GEO is the Ohio Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) and sponsors conferences, workshops, workforce training and assesses potential for wind turbine sites across the state. In addition to hundreds of volunteers, GEO has a membership of over 600, including 110 corporate members.  The quarterly, full-color Green Energy Ohio News Magazine chronicles the growing clean energy industry across the Buckeye State.


GEO Executive Director Bill Spratley said: “We are fired-up and are mobilizing hundreds of volunteers to hold a statewide tour effort in 2011, building on our 2010 Tour that was the largest in the nation.  Don’t miss out on one of the biggest Green Energy Events in the state.”


2011 Ohio Highlights by Region:

* Central:  2 Guided Tours; 30 Open House Sites; Including the 100 kW Byers Mazda Subaru Wind Turbine; Rainfresh Harvests, a bio-integrated greenhouse with Solar PV, Solar thermal and Wind; The Hawley Residence has a 6kW residential system in Upper Arlington.

* Southwest: A Guided Driving Tour; 82 Open House Sites; DP&L’s utility scale solar array; The McKelvey/Isaacs Residence, with Solar Thermal and 2.3 kW Residential Solar PV systems as well as Melink Corp, a Net Zero commercial facility in that it produces all the energy it needs.

* Southeast: A Guided Driving Tour;22 Open House Sites; The Athens Community Center’s 255 kW carport array; The Wilson Residence with an impressive 4 kW residential system.

* Northwest: 2 Guided Tours; 20 Open House Sites; The Toledo Museum of Art, a 200 kW Solar PV array; The Haney Residence with a 58,000 BTU Solar Thermal system and a 4 kW Residential Solar PV system; Ohio’s first ever utility scale Wind Farms.

* Northeast: 15 Guided Tours; 107 Open House Sites; The 2.5 MW Lincoln Electric Wind Turbine; A tour of the multi-million dollar energy efficiency upgrade at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
