The Spice Rack

By Dorotha Schaefer

Note: Our “Spice Girl,” Dortha Schaefer, is busy this week, preparing to move from the Dallas Lamb Home complex to a new apartment. For your enjoyment, we are reprinting some “best of” items from previous Spice Racks.

Do you remember your first day at school? This is the time of year to do that if you enjoy such things. A friend, Lila, recalls her first day to start getting educated. She was only 4, but she considered that old enough. Packing a lunch of peanut butter and jelly and taking a book from her mother’s library, she started walking in the general direction of the local school.

A big girl came along; she was at least 6 years old, Lila remembered. She took the little girl’s hand and finally brought her into the hall of the school. A teacher found her standing there, lost indeed. She took her to the office and Lila, being well educated in her house address and phone number, was hustled back home, a short day at school.
