Fire truck in the Auglaize ruled mechanical failure

By BILL SHERRY

Correspondent

OAKWOOD – Last Friday, Aug. 10, a crew from the Oakwood Fire Department drove Engine #38 down to the Auglaize River boat ramp to test the pump mounted on the front of the fire truck. What happened next was the major topic of Oakwood Village Council’s regular meeting on Monday.

Mayor Erhard “Bud” Henke stated that the truck had some problems with the pump at a fire the night before and the crew took it down to the river to see if they could figure out the problem. It was reported that the team had engaged the pump and was pumping water when they heard a loud “klunk” and the engine began moving forward, rolling over the wheel blocks set in front of the wheels, and proceeding down the boat ramp into the muddy Auglaize River, which was swift and muddy from recent rains.
