KATIE BAUMLE 1990-2013

PAYNE – Katie Marie Baumle, 23, of Payne, died Friday, Sept. 27 at IU Medical Center, Indianapolis, after a courageous struggle with Cystic Fibrosis.

She was born in Fort Wayne on Jan. 28, 1990, a daughter of Jerry and Kathy (Malfait) Baumle. Katie attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fort Wayne.

She will be greatly missed by her parents; brothers, Andrew (Erin) of Payne and Philip (Juliana) of New Haven; sister, Anna; niece and nephew, Katie Anna and Carter of Payne; and grandmothers, Theresa (Harold) Baumle of Payne and Joann (Joseph Sr.) Malfait of Woodburn.

A Requiem Latin Mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Sacred Heart Parish, 4643 Gaywood Drive, Fort Wayne.

Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1 with the recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m. at Dooley Funeral Home, Payne.

Katie’s family prefers memorials for masses or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

BERNARD MYLES 1921-2013

PAULDING – Bernard “Doc” Lewis Myles, 92, of Paulding, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26 at The Gardens of Paulding.

He was born on April 17, 1921 in Colton, to Earnest and Cora (Weirich) Myles. On June 17, 1995, he married Anna Lou Bland and she survives. “Doc” was a member of Rose Hill Church of God. He retired from truck driving in 1978. He was also a member of DAV, VFW and the Jewell and Defiance American Legions. He enjoyed carpentry, gardening, camping, and spending time with his family and auction friends.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters, Kathy (Bobby) Phillips, Sandra Fortman and Shelva Fortman, all of Defiance; stepdaughters, Diane Rinebolt of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Judith Morefield of Van Wert; sister, Bessie (Floyd) Cogan of Waterville; 14 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Dorothy M. Myles; and his son, Anthony Myles.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 30 at Schaffer Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Hofacker officiating. Burial was in the Riverview Memory Gardens, with military honors by VFW Post 3360.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research.

ANTWERP – Alice “Ronnie” Shipman, age 82, died Friday, Sept. 27.

 

 

GARY LEE JANNEY 1943-2013

TOLEDO – Gary Lee Janney, 69, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 20 at Toledo Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on Oct. 10, 1943 in Gaston, Ind., the son of Gerald and Helen Janney.

After graduating from Gaston High School, he joined the Navy and married his high school sweetheart and that union brought seven children into this world.

After completing his Navy stint, Gary worked at Borg Warner in Muncie, Ind. He became a journeyman electrician and worked in many states and was a member of IBEW Local 481.

Gary loved music, dancing, fishing, Indian lore, reading and his family and friends. He loved living near Charloe in the country, surrounded by nature.

His father and son, Rob and A. Janney were watching in heaven to welcome him along with all his family and friends that are already there.

He left behind his mother, Helen Janney; his sisters, Sheila (Bob) Brownfield and  Ann (Steve) Nichols of Defiance; his children, Debby Gentry, Rebecca Mumaw, Teresa Schindler, Cindy Craig, Angela Vance and Timothy Janney; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of his life on Oct. 12 at 10300 CR 171, Oakwood from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. with color guard from Defiance VFW Post 3360 attending.

Everyone is welcome.

BEVERLY SAYLOR 1945-2013

Beverly A. Saylor, 68, of Van Wert, died at 9:26 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

She was born May 29, 1945 in Van Wert, the daughter of Gerald and Lydia (Hennis) Schnepp, who both preceded her in death.

She retired from Teleflex, following 41 years of service. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Van Wert and had bowled for over 30 years. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and a Cincinnati Bengals fan.

Surviving are her step-children, Brad (Kim) Saylor of Van Wert, Lori (Kent) Klinger of Fort Jennings and Tammy (Jeff “Boone”) Hartman of Ohio City; step-grandchildren, Adam and Kelsey Saylor, Tabitha Saylor and Gregory and Justin Klinger and a step great-granddaughter, Arieanna L. Hartman.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald E. Schnepp.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 30 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Hal Shaffer officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

Hours of visitation will be from 2-6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home.

Preferred memorials should be directed to the St. Rita Medical Center Coronary Care Center, Lima.

 

LEILANI LLOYD 1937-2013

ANTWERP – Leilani Lloyd, 76, of Antwerp, passed away Monday, Sept. 23 at home.

Leilani was born Aug. 20, 1937 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of the late Alice (Harshbarger) and Frank Schibley. On Feb. 14, 1953, she married William Lloyd. She worked at Taylor Made Glass, Payne and was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish.

Leilani will be sadly missed by her husband, Bill; daughters Elizabeth (Jeff) Dunstan of Antwerp and Christina (Mark) Hamlin of Fremont, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Mark; and brothers, Richard, Olen and Butch Schibley.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Monroe Street, Antwerp.

Visitation is at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation also will be held there from 9-9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Memorials are for Masses.

HELEN SIGLEY 1936-2013

DEFIANCE – Helen M. Sigley, age 76, died Friday, Sept. 20 at The Laurels of Defiance.

She was born Dec. 5, 1936 in Paulding, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Keim) Eiserle. She was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Paulding. She attended the Institute of Medical Technology, Cleveland. She was a certified medical tech, and a lab tech for Stokely’s of Paulding, and Dinner Bell, Defiance. She was a 1981 graduate of Defiance College, majoring in accounting. She worked for River Region of Jacksonville, Fla., before returning to Paulding, where she worked and retired in 1999 from Park Center of Fort Wayne. She was also a 4-H leader and Girl Scout leader. She fought and won a courageous battle with breast cancer.

She is survived by three children, Diana (Bill) Shuler of Defiance, Michael (Marjorie) Sigley of Toledo and Robert (Brenda Oliver) Sigley, Defiance; two brothers, Paul (Jackie) Eiserle, Paulding, and David (Debbie) Eiserle, Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Brandi (Aaron Berry) Froelich and Bryan (Lisa Ward) Froelich, both of Defiance, Christina Sigley, Charleston, S.C., Matthew (Sara) Sigley of Deshler, Caroline (Mike) Sigley, Arlington, Va., James (Ashley) Sigley of Bryan and Nicole Sigley, Defiance; great grandchildren, Serenity, Kamdyn, Timothy, Lillian, Sophia, Desmond, Trinity, and Jonathon; and mother figure to Barbara (Rick) Watkins-Jones of Liberty Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Kenneth Eiserle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.

Donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

MARIETTA RILEY 1938-2013

PAYNE – Marietta Ruth Riley, age 74, died Thursday, Sept. 19 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

She was born Dec. 13, 1938 in Fort Wayne, the daughter of Orville E. and Inez E. (Snook) Long. On June 28, 1959, she married Carl L. Riley Jr. She was a registered nurse; owner/operator of PNF Pet Products, Paulding; ZIVI Bear Samoyed; and Buckeye Samoyed Rescue. She was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Church Food Bank, Northeast Indiana Kennel Club of Indiana and Samoyed Club of America.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Riley, Payne; three brothers, Donald E. (Martha J.) Long, Livingston, Texas, Ralph E. Long, Antwerp, and Timothy Long, Fort Wayne; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Sharon Long; and stepmother, June Long.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Payne, with the Rev. David Rohrer officiating. Burial will follow in Lehman Cemetery, Payne.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

HARRY CLUTS 1923-2013

PAYNE  – Harry Cluts, age 90, of Payne, died Friday, Sept. 13, at Mulberry Health Center, Mulberry, Ind.

 

CLYDE HUNTER 1948-2013

OAKWOOD – Clyde R. “Bud” Hunter, 65, of rural Oakwood, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday morning, Sept. 11  at Defiance Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 29, 1948 in Pineville, Ky., the son of the late Clyde and Dora (Hubbard) Hunter. Clyde accepted his Lord as his personal savior in 1972. On Aug. 25, 1973 he married Thelma Crisp, who survives. He was a trustee and member of Continental Missionary Baptist Church, a Sunday School superintendent, and served in the U.S. Navy. He had worked for GM Central Foundry for 33 years, retiring in 2006. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, construction, woodworking and spoiling his grandchildren.

Clyde will be greatly missed by his wife of 40 years, Thelma; a daughter, Amy (John) McMaster of Paulding; a son, Keith (Sheila) Hunter of Paulding; a sister, Deloras Hicks of Columbus Grove; and brothers, Ronald Hunter and Donald Hunter, both of Columbus Grove, and Robert (Linda) Hunter of Lima. He is also the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Emma McMaster, Julia McMaster, Katelyn Hunter, Titus Hunter and Kylee Hunter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Meyers, and his parents.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance, with the Rev. Terry Brock and the Rev. Denny Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday prior to services at Lawson-Roessner.

Suggested memorials are to the Alzheimer’s Association.

DELORIS GILTZ 1922-2013

PHOENIX – Former Paulding County resident Deloris “Dee” Giltz, age 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 4.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1922 in Paulding County, the daughter of Frank and Ursula (Tuohy) Price. She married Wilbur “Wib” Giltz, who preceded her in death.

Deloris is survived by a sister, Helen Johnson, Fort Wayne; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Gilmore, Joe, Vincent and Gene.

There will be no visitation. Burial will be at a later date. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding is handling arrangements.

ROBERT THORNELL 1927-2013

PAULDING – Robert C. Thornell, age 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 4 at The Gardens of Paulding.

He was born Feb. 2, 1927 in Van Wert County, the son of Walter and Mary E. (Tatman) Thornell. On Jan. 18, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding, he married Alma Mae Arend, who survives. He was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Lion’s Club of Grover Hill and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus. He was a fifth generation farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Mae Thornell, Paulding; a daughter, Janet (Dennis) Miller, Grover Hill; three sons, Larry (Cathy) Thornell and Tom Thornell, both of Paulding, and Robert (Diane) Thornell, Defiance; a brother, Myron (Donna) Thornell, Convoy; 12 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Arnold Thornell; and a sister, Rachel Hunter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, with the Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial will follow in Hedges Cemetery, Paulding County.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with a Rosary Service at 7:30. There also will be visitation one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials made to Masses or Divine Mercy Catholic Parish.

RICHARD GARVER 1936-2013

BRYAN – Richard O. Garver, age 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center, Defiance.

He was born June 4, 1936 in Paulding County, the son of Richard A. and Elizabeth (Lawson) Garver. On Nov. 9, 1998, he married Betty Casper Grunden, who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 2013. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of Eagles #2233 of Bryan, VFW Post #587 of Paulding, American Legion #178 of Van Wert and the Marine Corps League #758 Defiance. He retired from Lafarge Corporation in 1998.

He is survived by three granddaughters, Heather (David) Doolittle of Angola, Ind. and Anne Thomas and Dawn Emberling, both of Paulding; a son-in-law, Doc Aldred of Paulding; two great-grandsons, Brennen and Breyson; and a sister, Mary Branfield, Blytheville, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Ned A. Garver; a daughter, Dawnette Aldred; and two sisters, Veda Bayless and Rose Thomas.

Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.

EDWIN TEMPLE 1944-2013

PAULDING – Edwin R. Temple, age 69, died Tuesday, Sept. 3 at The Gardens of Paulding.

He was born June 19, 1944 in Paulding, the son of Raymond and Avanelle (Howell) Temple. On Jan. 6, 1973, he married Carol Thomas, who survives. He was an U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam War, and was a life member of the Paulding Eagles #2405. He retired in 1999 as a truck driver for Kenosha Auto Transport.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Temple, Paulding; two sons, Matt Temple of Van Wert, and Nathan Temple, Paulding; a brother, Robert “Bob” Temple of Paulding; a sister, Sharon (Charles) Dugan, of Paulding; and two grandchildren, Brody and Caleb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Edwin Temple; and a brother, Jack Temple.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Ben Lowell officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at Den Herder Funeral Home.

Donations may be made to Wounded Warrior’s Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
