The following is an update regarding snow and ice operations on state highways within the Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 which includes the counties of Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert and Wyandot.
January 8, 2014 (AM)
-80 ODOT crews are currently operating on the highways within the eight-county area of ODOT District 1.
-Crews have resumed treating roadways today with salt as the sun, greatly diminished winds and rising temperatures will be our allies. We expect to use an estimated 3,000 tons of salt today.
-Wheel tracks, or areas where bare pavement is visible, are expected to be present on most highways throughout the district by the end of today. Motorists are cautioned to continue to watch for icy conditions as patches of ice will likely remain.
-The public is reminded to not place snow from private drives onto highways. This is an illegal practice which can also create a safety hazard for motorists who may strike or be forced to maneuver around the obstruction in the roadway.
-Local county sheriff’s departments have begun to lift or downgrade travel advisories. Motorists should check with local departments on the status of travel in their county.
