DON “HUTCH” HUTCHISON 1933-2014

SCOTT — Don Owen “Hutch: Hutchison, 80, of Scott, died at 12:17 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Van Wert County Hospital.

 

NICK ERFORD 1960-2014

OAKWOOD – Nick Erford, 53, went home to be with the Lord at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, April 26 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born Aug. 14, 1960 in Defiance to Arthur and Norma (Adams) Erford. His father is deceased and mother survives in Defiance. On March 14, 2003, he married Kelly Hahn who survives. Nick retired in 2012 from Nickels Bakery. He attended Bethel Christian Church in Arthur.

Nick is also survived by three daughters, Tara (Jamie) Corbiere of Monroe, Mich., Elizabeth (Jeremy) Troyer of Oakwood and Chelsi (Scott) Vogel of Continental; two sons, Joey Sherry of Continental and Caleb Sherry of Van Wert; three grandchildren, Kylie, Taylor and Harley; four brothers, Dennis (Becky) Erford of Defiance, and Bruce (Diane) Erford, Tim (Pam) Erford and Jeff (Jill) Erford, all of Oakwood; and two sisters, Jean (Bruno) Garza of Defiance and Sheila (William) Holley of Oakwood.

Nick also was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Copsey; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Erford.

A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, with Pastor Chris Baker officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday, April 28 and one hour prior to service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the charity of donor’s choice.

HELEN “JEAN” SCARBROUGH 1932-2014

PAULDING – Helen Imogene “Jean” Scarbrough, age 81, died Wednesday, April 23 at the Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

She was born Sept. 7, 1932 in Paulding County, the daughter of Francis and Virginia (Ladd) Pier. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Grover Hill.

She is survived by her companion of 35 years, Vaughn Sanderson, Paulding; children, Sandra (Steve) Stecker, Mindoro, Wis., Sue (Edgar) Doster, Paulding, and Michael Scarbrough, Wren; siblings, Eileen Haines of Markle, Ind., Ray (Joan) Pier, Antwerp, Carroll “Toot” (Marilyn) Pier, Oakwood, Roger (Marlene) Pier, Antwerp, John (Bonnie) Pier, Melrose, and Dave (Sarah) Pier, Charloe; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Pier.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Road 151, Grover Hill, with Pastor Dave Prior officiating. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday, April 28 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and one hour prior to services at the church.

MASTER SGT. PAUL DeLONG 1940-2014

HENDERSON, Nev. – Master Sgt. Paul Clifford DeLong, 73, of Henderson, Nev., passed away Tuesday, April 22 at Kindred Hospital-St. Rose de Lima in Henderson.

He was born July 1, 1940 in Antwerp. Paul graduated from Antwerp Local School and received an associate’s degree in business from Clark County Community College. On Aug. 14, 1965, he married Robbie Reno. He retired from the United States Air Force after 23 years of service. He returned to work for the government at Nellis Air Force Base working for G.A.S. – Government Accounting Services, where he worked for 12 years.

His real passion in life has always been his family. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved to travel, play games, do crossword puzzles and watch game shows.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Robbie; son, Shawn DeLong (Stephanie) of Henderson, Nev.; daughter, Tammy (Rob) Purvines of Chandler, Ariz.; brother, Ray, of Antwerp; and two grandchildren, Alexandria and Makenzie Purvines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford DeLong and Ursie Hemenover of Antwerp.

Visitation will be 11 a.m.-noon Monday, April 28. Services will follow immediately after visitation, both at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, Nev.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Wounded Warriors or Catholic Charities. Paul was a veteran and donated many times to veteran charities during his lifetime and St. Rose Hospitals of Southern Nevada provided kind and compassionate care.

 

 

STEVEN WYSS 1948-2014

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Paulding resident Steven Wyss, age 65, died Thursday, April 17.

He was born Aug. 27, 1948 in Fort Wayne, the son of John and M. Gertrude (Hake) Wyss. He married Carla Ann Hanenkratt, who survives. He received his BS in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Steve began his career at the Grizzly Plant in Paulding and was transferred to Smithville in 1979. After 43 years, he retired as test services manager. He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, Smithville, and National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.

He is survived by his wife, Carla Ann Wyss, Smithville; two children, John Paul Wyss, Smithville, and Stephanie (Graham Porter) Wyss, Littleton, Colo.; his mother, M. Gertrude Wyss, Fort Wayne; siblings, Jeanne Wyss, South Bend, Ind., Beverly Courtney, Tampa, Fla., Gregory Wyss, Corunna, Ind., Christine Giant, Fort Wayne, Paul Wyss, Yoder, Ind., Lisa Werling, Fort Wayne, and Ann Wyss, Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his father, John, in 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Paulding. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery. Den Herder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

VICKI LONG 1944-2014

OAKWOOD – Vicky Rae Long, 69, of Oakwood, died at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at her residence.

She was born Sept. 6, 1944 in Paulding to the late Dorris and Myrtle (Wilcox) Steele. She married Leonard Jack Feeney, who preceded her in death. On July 5, 1975, she then married Fred W. Long, who survives in Oakwood. Vicky was an EMT for the Oakwood EMS. She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Oakwood Village Council, and a volunteer for the Paulding Senior Center. She was active in the Wayne Trace Wrestling Club.

Survivors also include her children, Jeff (Loretta) Feeney of Defiance, Rick Long of Jackson, Mich., and Jerry (Kelly) Feeney, Rob (Karisa) Long and Chad (Holly) Long, all of Oakwood; 10 grandchildren, Leonard Jack Feeney III, Jeff Feeney Jr., Shauna (Sean) Marsee, Nichole Hornish, Robert Long, Taylor Long, Hunter Long, Jacob Long, Chad Long, and Maddie Egnor; four great-grandchildren, Kaiden Feeney, Kale Marsee, O’Koner Feeney, Kaine Marsee, and one on the way; two sisters, Grace Marshall of Dayton and LeAnn Boyd of Van Wert; a brother, Dennis Steele of Defiance; and three dear friends, Diane Clemens, Sue Barron and Sherri Friend.

She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Jack Feeney Jr.; a sister, Kate Flint; and a brother, Karl Ray Steele.

Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, with Pastor Dave Prior officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.

LESTER HART 1928-2014

ANTWERP – Lester Hart, 85, of Antwerp, passed away Saturday, April 19 at The Gardens of Paulding.

Lester was born in Paulding County on Dec. 23, 1928, a son of the late Opal (Dotterer) and Charles Hart. Lester served in the U.S. Army and was the owner of Hart’s Auto Parts, Cecil. On May 7, 1971, he married Ruth Fetters. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling and flying his own plane.

He will be missed by his wife, Ruth; children, Randy (Cali) Getrost of Decatur, Ind., Kathy (Kelly) Whitney of Antwerp, Ronnie Getrost of Gaffney, S.C. and Barbara (Aaron) Butzin of Antwerp; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23 at Antwerp United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior. He will be laid to rest at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Dooley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HAVILAND – Victoria Sue Gray, age 29, died Wednesday, April 16.

She was born Sept. 5, 1984 in Defiance, the daughter of Michael E. and Brenda L. (Hill) Sprow.

She is survived by her father, Michael (Vicki) Sprow, Paulding; her mother, Brenda (Jerry) Smith, Paulding; two children, Zander and Bralynn; maternal grandfather, Paul Hill, Paulding; and siblings, Lisa (Rodney) Stevens, Temperance, Mich., Annie Sprow, Paulding, Shane (April) Litzenberg, Charie (Brad) Peters and Alli (Joe) Beregzazi, all of Antwerp, Angie Doel, Massachusetts, Sara (Jason) Bullinger, Convoy, and Sam (Ashley) Smith, Paulding.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Margie Hill, and paternal grandparents, Elmer and Kate Sprow.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Ben Lowell officiating. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding.

ANTWERP – Bainbridge “Bing” Rasey, 77, of Antwerp, passed away Wednesday, April 16 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Hicksville.

 

DAVID ZIEGLER 1960-2014

PAULDING – David Wayne Ziegler, age 53, died Tuesday, April 15 at the Paulding County Hospital.

He was born Dec. 6, 1960 in Henry County, The son of Kent and Alberta (Fouts) Ziegler. On Feb. 14, 1995, he married Wanda M. Miller, who survives. He was employed by Custom Assembly, Haviland, and was a member of Paulding Eagles #2405. He enjoyed canoeing, bird watching and nature.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Ziegler, Paulding; children, Jamie (Greg) Lammers, Paulding, Lindsey Lassiter, Cincinnati, and Hannah Tunis, Paulding; grandchildren, Taylor, Greg Jr., Olivia and Calvin; mother, Alberta “Bert” Smith, Defiance; and siblings, Debbie (Walter) Kauser, Paulding, Keith (Sharon) Ziegler, Texas and Tammy (Shane) Wilson, Defiance.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kent Ziegler; a brother, Kenny Ziegler; maternal grandparents Albert and Esther Fouts; and paternal grandparents Kenneth and Charlotte Ziegler.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 18 and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.

TERRY CORWIN 1958-2014

PAULDING – Terry Lynn Corwin, age 55, died at 8:54 p.m. Thursday, April 10 at the Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

He was born Nov. 30, 1958 in Defiance, the son of Gerald L. and Christine E. (Gross) Corwin. He was a 1982 graduate of the College of the Desert with a degree in electrical engineering. He was employed by Best Florescent I Amtec of Palm Desert, Calif., from 1978-91 as a service technician, advancing to operations manager. In 1991, he moved to Ohio and started his own business, Corwin Electrical Lighting and Sign. He was presently employed at Brune Printing of Paulding as an assistant printer.

Surviving are his parents, Gerald and Christine Corwin of Paulding; two sons, Adam (Erin) Corwin of Anaheim, Calif. and Christopher (Jolin) Corwin of Van Wert; two sisters, Jewel E. (Glen) Polk of Irvine, Calif. and Joan E. (Mike) Ryan of Aurora, Colo.; and three grandsons, Michael James Corwin, Alexander Charles Corwin and Zachary Peter Corwin.

Terry was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Clayton and Verna Gross; paternal grandparents, William and Verna Corwin; and one brother, Randall Clayton Corwin.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 at Paulding Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. David Meriwether officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, April 14 at the Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and on Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church from noon-1 p.m.

DWIGHT RHOADES 1923-2014

VENEDOCIA – Dwight Benjamin Rhoades, 90, of rural Venedocia, York Township, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday, April 7 at Van Crest Health Care Center, Van Wert.

He was born Oct. 23, 1923, in York Township, Van Wert County, to the late Ada Mary Jones and Alonzo Rhoades. His wife, Marjorie J. (Knittle), survives. They were married Nov. 22, 1945.

He was a lifetime farmer, salesman and worked for Elgin Service Center. He was a member of Salem United Presbyterian Church, where he had served as elder and Sunday school teacher. He was a 1941 graduate of York High School, a member of the Venedocia Lions Club and had received his 45-year Chevron pin. He was a great humorist and loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid euchre player.

Other survivors include a son, Steve M. (Sammie) Rhoades of Findlay; daughters, Mary (Charles) Brenner of Zanesville and Carol (Marty) Sullins of Nashville, Tenn.; brother, John M. (Phyllis) Rhoades of Waynesboro, Va.; seven grandchildren, Chad (Kristin), Kerrie (Jeff), Stephanie, Kevin, Kyle (Alyson), Katie (Zach) and Adam (Kate); and nine great-grandchildren, Gavin, Jackson, Parker, Lily, Reese, Kieran, Madeline, Otto and Elin.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul W. Rhoades, and a sister, Thelma Rhoades.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at Salem United Presbyterian Church, Venedocia. The Rev. Tom Emery will officiate. Burial will be in Venedocia Cemetery, Venedocia.

Calling hours are from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 11 at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Preferred memorial is CHP Hospice or Salem United Presbyterian Church.

ANTWERP – Barbara L. Panico, 88, of Antwerp, passed away Sunday, April 6, at The Gardens of Paulding.

 

 

AL VERFAILLIE 1926-2014

 

PAULDING – Alfonse “Al” Verfaillie, age 87, died Saturday, April 5 at The Gardens of Paulding, Paulding.

He was born May 18, 1926 in Detroit, the son of Julius and Mary (DeCook) Verfaillie. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII. He retired in 1979 from the former Grizzly Manufacturing, Paulding, and was a member of VFW Post #587.

He is survived by a nephew, Robert Verfaillie, and a niece, Deanna (Tom) Rhonehouse, both of Paulding.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lucien, Frank and Andrew Verfaillie; an infant sister, Laura; two nephews, David and Larry; and a niece, Virginia.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Pastor Robert Verfaillie officiating. Burial will be in Live Oak Cemetery, with military graveside services accorded by VFW Post #587.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services Wednesday, April 9.

IRENE STOLLER 1924-2014

PAULDING – Irene Josephine Stoller, age 89, died at 8:40 a.m. Saturday, April 5 at the Country Inn Enhanced Living Center, Paulding.

She was born in Cissna Park, Ill. on June 15, 1924, the daughter of Jacob L. and Sophia Bessie (Farney) Funk. On Aug. 16, 1964, she married Melvin A. Stoller, who preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2010. She was previously employed in the offices of Caterpillar of Peoria, Ill., and FMC Corp. of Hoopeston, Ill.

She is survived by two sisters, Iva (Darl) Stoller of Latty and Melba (Alan) Zimmerman, Fairbury, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Waters, Marie (Jack) Moore, Eunice (Roger) Gerber and Irma Stoller, all of Paulding, Lorine (Myron) Hackenjos of New Haven, Nathalia (Allan) Getz, Eureka, Ill., and Anna Grimm, Princeville, Ill.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister-in-law, Lillian Eisenmann; and brothers-in-law: Millard Stoller, Roscoe Waters, Earl Grimm, Eldon Steffen and William Eisenmann.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 8 at the Latty Apostolic Christian Church, Latty. Burial will follow in the Latty Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday, April 7, at the Latty Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall, Latty, and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

OAKWOOD - Harold E. McCullough, 82, of Oakwood, died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center, Van Wert.

 

 

LOLA MAE MYERS 1938-2014

HICKSVILLE – Lola Mae Marie Myers, 75, died Friday, April 4 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

Lola was born on Nov. 23, 1938 in Hicksville, the daughter of the late Ellary Tustison and Margaret (Stewart) Dotts. On June 18, 1971, she was united in marriage to Carl Myers and he preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2000. Lola retired from United Technologies (Sheller Globe). She loved going to the Hicksville Senior Center and was an avid bingo player.

Lola Mae is survived by two sons, Ed (Lisa) Rohlof of Bryan and Jason (Julie) Myers of Hamler; two daughters, Kathy Bechtold of Mark Center and Dianna (Tim) Shafer of Paulding; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, RT Tustison and Roger Tustison; and five sisters, Janet Martenies, Phyliss Wyrick, Marilyn Fogle, Vicki Bronne and Barbara Schindler.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior Tustison and Zach Tustison; and a sister, Shirley Camp.

A private family gathering will be held. Smith & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
