|Panthers pound away at Wildcats|

PAULDING — It was a gorgeous Friday afternoon/evening for a baseball game.
Unfortunately for head coach Doug Geary and the Jefferson baseball crew, they had one of those games against Paulding.
The Panthers put together an 18-hit attack and grabbed a 13-3 6-inning Northwest Conference triumph at Keysor Athletic Complex in Paulding.
The game was originally slated for Thursday but was moved up due to a scheduling conflict.
The Wildcats (4-3, 0-1) got on board first in the top of the first against Paulding starter and winner Garod Harder (1-0; 6 innings pitched, 9 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 bases-on-balls, 1 strikeout; 78 pitches, 50 for strikes): three singles, including Hunter Binkley’s run-scoring single to center (Ross Thompson) and an Austin Jettinghoff sacrifice fly to right (Jace Stockwell) for a 2-0 edge.
Paulding (2-2, 2-0 NWC) retaliated against Thompson (1-1; 1 2/3 IPs, 10 hits, 9 runs, 7 earned, 2 BBs, 4 wild pitches) in the home half, sending nine to the plate. They used a walk, an error and four hits — including a run-scoring double by Trustin Gonzales (3-for-5, 3 runs scored) and RBI knocks by Javier Gonzales (3-for-5, 3 RBIs) and Harder (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), plus a wild pitch that scored Corbin Edwards (2 runs). That made it 4-2 when the third out was recorded.
Paulding coach Mike Leach felt the early reply was key.
“Any time you fall behind early like that, you’re not sure how your kids will react. We did well in that regard,” Leach added. “We came out with a positive and aggressive approach at the plate; we attacked the fast ball early. Garod did a nice job on the mound. He isn’t going to blow anyone away but he does throw strikes and keeps his defenders on their toes. We need our defense to make plays behind him and we have done that so far; turning three double plays is a nice present for a pitcher.”
The Panthers turned the first of their three double plays in the visitor second.
Paulding put up a 5 spot in the home second, chasing Thompson for Josh Teman (2 2/3 IPs, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 2 BBs, 1 K). They send 11 to the dish and compiled a walk, an error and six hits — including a 2-run grounder into center by J. Gonzales and RBI hits by Quinton Vance (3-for-5, 3 runs, 3 RBIs) and Harder — to take a 9-2 edge after a pair of frames.
Paulding kept the Wildcats at bay by turning its second twin-killing in the third frame.
Delphos got within 9-3 in the top of the fourth: a Jettinghoff infield hit to short, a Binkley groundout, Gage Mercer’s sharp knock into left and a sacrifice fly to center by Adam Rode.
The home team made it 12-3 in the bottom of the inning on four hits — the big one a 2-out 2-run double by Vance — and a bases-loaded error that accounted for a 12-3 advantage.
A Delphos rally in the fifth was again short-circuited by a double play.
The Wildcats again kept battling in the sixth but left two on base.
Paulding finished it off in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff infield hit to third by Vance, a throwing error, a 1-out groundout by Edwards and an infield single by Damon Egnor (2-for-3, 2 BBs).
