PAYNE – For the past five years, members of the Mills family in the Payne area have spearheaded fundraisers to assist in research for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Several members of the family have died from the incurable disease over the years.
Edie Mills, who helps distribute the donations, said that the fundraisers have averaged $5,000 a year and has collected over $25,000 in a five-year period. Of that amount, $12,000 has gone directly to research and the rest has gone to purchase supplies and assist with needs of those who are currently sick with the disease.
