WILLIAM HUFF 1926-2011

OAKWOOD – William A. Huff, 84, Oakwood, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Oakwood, the son of Archie and Mable (Sullivan) Huff. On Feb. 26, 1949, he married Luella Herman, who survives in Oakwood. He retired from S.K. Hand Tool Co. of Defiance. He had also worked for Oakwood Elevator. He was a World War II Navy veteran and member of the Oakwood American Legion and Paulding VFW. He coached Little League and Pony League in the Oakwood area for many years; he enjoyed fishing and was a fan of the Detroit Tigers.

Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Danny) Thomas of Oakwood and Carole (Ray) Keesbury of Defiance; eight grandchildren, Kelly Bunda, Kenny Thomas, Kory Thomas, Emily Huff, Erin Bustos, Greg Keesbury, Ryan Keesbury and Jessica McClanahan; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice “Punkie” (Orville) Heilshorn of Columbus.

He was preceded in death also by two brothers, Ornis Huff and Archie “Mick” Huff; and five sisters, Gelia Knepper, Vivian Bidlack, Deloris Houghton, Reba Gorrell and Norma Moran.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Sept. 29 at Prairie Chapel Cemetery, Oakwood, with Deacon Rosalio Martinez officiating. Military rites were accorded by the Oakwood American Legion and Paulding VFW. Heitmeyer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BOB MILLER 1956-2011

HICKSVILLE – Robert Miller, 55, of Hicksville, formerly of Antwerp, died Thursday, Sept 29 at Park View Nursing Center, Edgerton, Ohio.

He was born Aug. 13, 1956, in Defiance, a son of the late Carey and Regina Ruth (Meyer) Miller. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1974-77 and from 1978-82.

Surviving are his wife, Hannelore; two sons, Greg and Glenn; three daughters, Jennifer, Stephanie and Chiquita; a brother, Ed; and sister, Karen.

His graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7 at Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp, with Deacon Robert Nighswander officiating. Antwerp VFW Post 5087 will accord military honors. Dooley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KATHY JOHNSON 1959-2011

ANTWERP – Kathy Lynn Johnson, 52, of Antwerp, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hicksville.

She was born April 21, 1959 in Paintsville, Ky., the daughter of the late Justice Dennison and Helen (Mullins) Mills. On April 26, 1980, she married Mark Johnson, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert (Laura) and Jeremiah (Tashia Curtis); two brothers, Billy (Shari) Mills and Ricky Dennison; and three grandchildren, Kamren, Avin and Kyler Johnson, all of Antwerp.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with the Rev. Max Begley officiating.

Visitation will be held two two hours prior to services on Friday.

EDDIE SHUHERK 1928-2011

CROMWELL, Ind. – Eddie C. Shuherk, 83, died peacefully, with his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Anne (Rhoad), by his side, Thursday, Sept. 22.

He was born May 28, 1928 in Allen County, Ind., the son of Charles and Edna (Peffley) Shuherk. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a carpenter, a restaurateur and an avid sportsman who loved hunting, golfing, bowling and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He lived a wonderful life and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is also survived by his sister, Esther Morrow; three daughters, Beth Seslar, Carol Shuherk and Cindy Shuherk; six grandchildren, Eric Seslar, Cassandra Daniels, Josh and  Luke Parrish and William and Walker Zupan; and five great-grandchildren, Cole Seslar, Caitlin and Crosby Daniels and Emma and Kyia Parrish.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, with viewing hone hour prior at Antwerp United Methodist Church, Antwerp. Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, is in charge of arrangements.

LOUIS MILLER 1954-2011

PAULDING – Louis B. Miller, 57, of Paulding County died at 8:25 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

He was born July 30, 1954, in Paulding County, the son of Berlin and Evelyn “Sis” (Ashbaugh) Miller, who both preceded him in death. On Jan. 12, 1974, he married Cheryl Foust, who survives. He was a 1972 graduate of Wayne Trace High School He had been employed for 31 years at Johns-Mansville Plant 8 in Defiance as a shipping supervisor. He was a member of the National Corvette Restoration Society of Miami Valley and Heart of Ohio. He was also a judge at many Corvette car shows.

Also surviving are a daughter, Amy (Eric) Hohenberger of Walbridge, and a son, Brett (Sarah Flynn) Miller of Paulding.

A private family graveside service will be held. Burial was in the Middle Creek Cemetery in Grover Hill. Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home and Crematory in Van Wert was in charge of arrangements.

BERNETIA VERFAILLIE 1925-2011

PAULDING – Bernetia C. Verfaillie, age 86, died Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.

She was born March 9, 1925 in Van Wert County, the daughter of Andrew T. and Viola Mae (Cotterman) Gillett. On Jan. 26, 1945, she married Lucien A. Verfaillie, who preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1996. She was a homemaker and was previously employed by the Bargain Bin, Koin Laundry and the former Grizzly Manufacturing, Paulding.

She is survived by three brothers, Andrew (Ruth Ann) Gillett of Van Wert, Leroy (Barbara) Gillett of Bryan and John Gillett, San Diego; two sisters, Roberta Norling, Oakwood, and Lulah (Dick) Miller, Edon; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a son, David Verfaillie; a daughter, Virginia S. Schlatman; a granddaughter, Laura Hasch; and three sisters, Hulda Carlisle, Lydia Price and Faith Taylor.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Pastor Mike Harper officiating. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery, Paulding County.

Visitation will be from 2:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the funeral home, Paulding, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

GRACE REYNOLDS 1929-2011

PAULDING – Grace Florence Reynolds, age 82, died Saturday, Sept. 17 at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance.

She was born Aug. 19, 1929 in Hamilton County, the daughter of Avery and Maxine (Studer) Kinnett. She was previously employed as an LPN by Paulding County Hospital.

She is survived by six children, Greg (Janet) Stevens of Chunky, MS, Steve (Elda) Martens of Paulding, Vickie (Brian) Carter of Payne, Sue (Stuart) Hirsch of Fort Wayne, Robert (Vevette) Kermer of Payne and Christa Williams, Paulding; 24 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Private family burial will be held at a later date. Den Herder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ERNEST DeCAMP 1915-2011

GROVER HILL – Ernest Elsworth DeCamp, 96, of Grover Hill, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19 at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Van Wert.

He was born June 25, 1915 in Latty Township, Paulding County, the son of Joseph Frank and Susan (Gattshall) DeCamp. On March 10, 1940, in Mt. Eaton, he married Hazel C. Mosier of rural Middle Point, who preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1997. He was a lifetime farmer in Latty Township and had worked at the Continental Can Company in Van Wert. He was a member of the Paulding County Farm Bureau and the Ohio Farmer’s Union.

He is survived by a son, Roger (Nancy) DeCamp of Grover Hill; two daughters, Marilyn (Paul) Hoehn of Ottoville and Diana DeCamp of Grover Hill; three grandsons, Larry (Patti) Hoehn of Burlison, Tenn., Steve (Jeannette) Hoehn of Ottoville and David (Heather) DeCamp of San Antonio; a great-grandson, Cody Hoehn; four great-stepgrandchildren, Elizabeth and Bill Cook, Kristi Hasty and Lauren Calvert; and a brother, Andrew (Joyce) DeCamp of Grover Hill.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Warren DeCamp; and nine sisters, Sarah Grunden, Esther Miller, Dellie Pucket, Ethel Long, Bessie Price, Grace Mosier, Lucy Adams, Velma DeCamp and Florence Daniel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 at Brickner Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Interment will be at Middle Creek Cemetery in Grover Hill.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.

RUTH “CURLY” KEELER 1923-2011

PAULDING – Ruth “Curly” G. Keeler, age 88, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 at The Gardens of Paulding.

She was born Sept. 16, 1923 in Paulding, the daughter of John P. and Julia O. (Ankney) Julian. On July 11, 1942, she married John L. Keeler, who preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1986. She was employed as a matron and deputy for the Paulding County Jail. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Paulding; the Buckeye State Sheriff Association; lifetime member of VFW Post #587 Auxiliary; and lifetime member of Paulding County Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, John (Susan) Keeler, Paulding; a daughter, Dorothy (Jerry) Flaugh, Payne; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Colley.

With respect to Mrs. Keeler’s requests, there will be no visitation. A private family-only graveside services will be held in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding. Den Herder Funeral  Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church or The Gardens of Paulding Activity Fund.

C. JAMES HARP 1922-2011

PAYNE – C. James Harp, 89, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 15 at St. Joe Hospital, Fort Wayne, following a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 16, 1922, the son of Clarence W. and Anna (Parady) Harp. He graduated from Payne High School in 1940, where he played basketball, football and enjoyed FFA. He also helped his father with farming and remembered distinctly using horses and mules in his daily farming chores. Jim was a WWII veteran, serving with the 83rd Infantry (Thunderbolts) in the European Theater. Jim was awarded a Purple Heart, after receiving a mortar wound in France. Following the war, Jim served as a rural letter carrier in Payne for 37 years. On May 10, 1952, he married Elaine Schaefer at St. John’s Catholic Church in Payne.

Jim lived his whole life in and around Payne. The last several years, he and his wife, Elaine, divided their time between Hamilton Lake, Ind. and Hot Springs Village, Ark. He served on several school boards including Payne Local School, Paulding County Schools and Vantage Vocational School. Active in his church in both Payne and Hot Springs Village, Ark., he was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He also was past commander of the Ruben J. Smith Post 297 American Legion. Jim was an avid golfer both in Payne and Hots Springs Village.

He was the proud father of two children, Frederica “Fritzi” (Dr. Duane) Nodine of Bluffton, Ind. and James D. Harp of Payne; three grandchildren, Sarah Nodine of St. Louis, Jon (April) Nodine of Louisville and Bailey Nodine of Bluffton, Ind.; one great-grandson, Jones Harp Nodine; a sister, Genevieve Stumbo of Lakeland, Fla.; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lois Ann Hudson, Joan Sutton Gauvey and Janice Larson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Sept. 19 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Payne. Dooley Funeral  Home was in charge of arrangements.

Preferred memorials are either Masses or to Divine Mercy Catholic School, Payne.

REX BOROFF 1933-2011

PAULDING – Rex E. Boroff, age 77, died Saturday, Sept. 17 at Community Health Professionals Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice, Defiance.

He was born Oct. 28, 1933, the son of Clarence and Anna (Hertel) Boroff. On Aug. 3, 1956, he married Pauline V. Warner, who survives, He was a U.S. Marines veteran and was a self-employed farmer. He was retired from GM Powertrain, Defiance, in 1981, and was a self-employed tree trimmer. He was a member of American Legion Post #341, Oakwood.

Also surviving are four children, Rex (Vicki) Boroff Jr. of Paulding, Linda (Marc) Bloomstein of Las Vegas, Tanya (Gene) Tyler of Milford, Ind., and Jamy (Dan) Manson, Paulding; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Cline.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.

There will be a private family burial services at a later date.

MARY ALICE FRITZ 1923-2011

 

BLUFFTON, Ind. – Mary Alice Fritz, 88, of Bluffton, Ind. passed away at 7:40 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 at Christian Care Community in Bluffton.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1923 in Paulding, the daughter of Harry and Nellie (Corwin) Wunder. She grew up in Paulding and graduated from Paulding High School in 1941. She married William G. Fritz on June 16, 1946 in the Simpson United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2001.

She has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Bluffton, serving on the altar guild for 22 years. She was a member and past president of Psi Iota XI Sorority, and was instrumental in getting a speech therapist in the Bluffton School System. She was also a member of the Elks ladies organization and the Emblem Club. She worked along side her husband Bill as they owned and operated the Fritz Electric Company in Bluffton from 1946 to November of 1983.

Surviving are a daughter, Janelle M. (Mike) Markovitz of Long Grove, Ill.; a son, James W. (Linda) Fritz of Bluffton; three grandchildren, Michael (Leah) Fritz of Tygh Valley, Ore., Melanie (Bart) Tweedie of Westchester, Ill. and Mark Fritz of Winthrop, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Henry and Leila Tweedie.

She also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Fred Smith; two brothers, Howard and Gorden Wunder; a stepbrother, Carl Smith; and a grandson, Matthew Fritz.

Friends are invited to gather and share memories with the Fritz family from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. Funeral services will follow calling hours at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Greg Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Bluffton.

GENE ROWE 1948-2011

MELROSE – Gene E. Rowe, age 62, died Monday, Sept. 12 at the Paulding County Hospital.

He was born Nov. 26, 1948 in Winamac, Ind., the son of Junior and Pauline E. (Jackson) Rowe.

He is survived by three daughters, Tina, Geneine and Kristhena Rowe; three sisters, Juanita (Bill) Sharpe of Antwerp, Terry (Jim) Clark of Cecil and Gina (Brian) Vance, Paulding; stepfather, Bob Unger, Paulding; a companion, Noline Wagner; and many grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim “Bo” Unger; and a grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 and one hour prior to services on Saturday at Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding.

LINDA WRIGHT 1948-2011

OAKWOOD – Linda I. Wright, 63, Oakwood, died Thursday, Sept. 8 at her home.

She was born March 16, 1948, in East St. Louis, Ill., the daughter of Laverne and Thelma (Moussette) Ridgeway. On March 19, 1966, she married Carl Wright Jr., who survives. She was a homemaker.

Also surviving are three sons, Jay G. Ridgeway of Continental, James A. Wright of Oakwood and Carl B. (Toni) Wright III of Cecil; a daughter, Carla (Robert) Stites, Bryson City, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five brothers; and three sisters.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother.

There will be no services or visitation. Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, is in charge of arrangements.

EVELYN SLATTMAN 1935-2011

OAKWOOD – Evelyn K. Slattman, 75, of Oakwood, died 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Sept. 8, 1935 in Oakwood, the daughter of Clyde and Marcelle (Buettner) Leatherman. On Nov. 29, 1954, she married H. Bernard Slattman, who survives in Oakwood. Evelyn was a homemaker.

Also surviving are her children, James (Robin) Slattman of Marysville, Jerry Slattman of Cloverdale and Marvin Slattman of Oakwood; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a grandchild; a brother, Louis Leatherman; and a sister, Delores Grindstaff.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, with the Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Chapel Cemetery, Oakwood.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 and one hour prior to service on Friday at the funeral home.

NANCY WOODRING 1942-2011

ANTWERP – Nancy K. Woodring, 69, of Antwerp, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011 at her residence.

Nancy was born in Fort Wayne on Aug. 10, 1942, a daughter of Richard Wannemacher & the late Mildred (Schmidt) Wannemacher. She married Bill Woodring on Jan. 28, 1961. She worked at Hicksville Hospital, but previously Nancy worked at Dana Weatherhead and enjoyed baby sitting for many years. A devout member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Antwerp, she was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society. She loved to travel, camp and garden.

Nancy will be sadly missed by her husband, Bill; father, Richard Wannemacher of Payne; children, Bill (Angie) of Edgerton, Ind., Chris (Bruce) Ferris of Cecil, Dan (Lisa) of West Unity, Shelly (Jim) Murlin of Antwerp and Rick of Fairfield; siblings, Sue (Jerry) Zielke of Antwerp, Donna of Alvordton, Pat Wobler of Edgerton, Ind.; Dick (Sue) and Tom (Lou Ann) Wannemacher, both of Payne; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Antwerp at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9. Viewing is Thursday, 2-8 p.m. and Friday, 9-9:30 a.m. at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp. A VFW Auxiliary service and Catholic vigil service will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp.

TERRISA RICE

ANTWERP – Terrisa M. Rice, of Antwerp passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 at Vancrest Healthcare Center.

Terri was born in Fort Wayne the daughter of Raymond Terrill and the late Hazel (Bollier) Terrill. She was a  beautician.

Terri will also be sadly missed by her children, Tonya Collins of Denver and Rod Botteron of Fort Wayne; father, Raymond Terrill of Antwerp; and grandson, Brad Botteron.

Her graveside service is at Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

WILLIAM KUHN 1928-2011

PAYNE – William A. Kuhn, age 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Paulding County Hospital.

He was born Jan. 13, 1928 in Tucson, Ariz., the son of Joseph F. and Minnie A. (Ott) Kuhn. On Aug. 16, 1952, he married Mary Ann Chaney, who preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 2000. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, and a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Payne. He retired in 1974 after 30 years from International Harvester. He was a union steward for UAW Local #57. He was a member of Payne American Legion Post #297, an associate at Slade Funeral Home, Payne, and a former Payne Council member.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Joseph (Evelyn) Kuhn, Payne and Gary Kuhn, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Claudia (Blane) Fickel, Oakwood, and Pamela (Joseph) Potter Zephyrhills, Fla.; a brother, Jack (Marjorie) Kuhn, Fort Wayne; and five grandchildren, David and JoEllen Fickel and Kriston, Jana and Kara Lorenzen.

He also was preceded in death two brothers, Daniel Kuhn and infant Joseph Kuhn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Payne, with the Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Payne, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #297.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. with a rosary service at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.

HICKSVILLE – Jean L. Forrest, 83, of Hicksville, passed away Friday, Sept. 2 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Jean was born in Covington, Ky. on April 9, 1928, a daughter of the late Bert and Esther (Martin) Major. On July 20, 1946 she married Bob Forrest who passed away May 3, 2003. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Jean will be sadly missed by her daughters, Kay (James) Morhart of Woodburn, Ind. and Jan (Pete) Manuguerra, of Medina; a son, Todd (Marie) of Toledo; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Jack, Bert and  Peggy Major, Helen Welling and Ruth Clinton; and a grandson, Zachary.

Her funeral service will be at Bethel United Methodist Church, Antwerp, on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. Viewing is at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp on Friday from 4-8 p.m.

ROBERT PERL 1937-2011

PAULDING - Robert Ray Perl, 73, went to be with his Lord Saturday, Sept. 3 at his residence.

He was born Dec. 15, 1937 in Paulding County, the son of Richard Perl and LaVoon (Klingler) Perl. On Oct. 19, 1957 he married Joann Marie Link, who survives. A 1957 graduate of Paulding High School, Bob was formerly employed by Reinhart Chevrolet and later owned Bob Perl’s Shell Service, Inc. until 1978 when he began working at Paulding Exempted Village Schools as a custodian. He retired from the school in 2006 after 28 years. He was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Paulding, where he served 38 years. Bob dearly loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren, family and his church family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and sharing his love of fishing with them.

Bob is also survived by three daughters, Julie (Anthony) Solis, Wheaton, Ill., Cindy (Bud) Koenig, Paulding and Carrie (Ed) Ferrier, Fort Wayne; a brother, Gail (Judy) Perl, Paulding; three half-brothers, Paul (Roberta) Perl of Midway, David Perl and Richard (Marsha) Perl, both of Paulding; a half-sister, Melody (Dennis ) Peffley, Butler, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Candice (Jared) Calame, Dan (Katelyn) Ferrier, Kristen (Jeff) Gerber, David Ferrier, Michael Solis and Danielle Solis.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, A. Rex Adams; his father and stepmother, Fannie Perl; two sisters, Rose Ellen Ross and infant Nancy Perl; two half-brothers, Willard and Phillip Perl; and a half-sister, Phyllis Perl.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 6 from 2 - 8 p.m. at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Paulding with Pastor Drew Gardner officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

MARY LOU MANDLY 1928-2011

NEY – Mary Lou Mandly, 83, of Ney, was born into eternal life Thursday, Sept. 1 at the CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1928, the daughter of Leo and Mildred (Mangas) Kolb. In 1957, she married Marvin Mandly, who preceded her in death in 1961. She was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church at Marysdale and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She had worked at GM Central Foundry for over 20 years in the cafeteria and in the plant. She enjoyed gardening and loved her faithful, black Boxer/Lab, Buddy.

Surviving are her two, loving daughters, Cindy (Reuben) Garza of Ney and Sue (Don) Arend of Paulding; a sister, Madonna Koenn of Cecil; two grandchildren, Darcy (Alex) Stoller of Paulding and Laura Arend of Paulding; stepgrandchildren, Chelsea and Corbin Garza of Ney; and a great-grandson, Luke Stoller.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Eugene Kolb.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale, with Father Robert Kill officiating. Burial will be in St. Caspar Catholic Church Cemetery, Wauseon.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance, with a rosary service at 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation also will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services Saturday, at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale.

JOSEPH PRATT 1928-2011

SCOTT – Joseph W. Pratt, 83, of Scott, died at 4:47 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Vancrest of Convoy in Convoy.

He was born Aug. 19, 1928, the son of LeRoy and Elsie (Brown) Pratt. On May 18, 1947, he married Cydona I. (Jewell) Pratt, who preceded him in death on June 2, 1995. He was employed at the Union Quarries for over 20 years and Van Wert County for over 20 years. He knew the names and numbers of most all of the county roads. He was a hard-working and determined man. He loved his children, grandchildren and the rest of his family. He enjoyed driving micro midget cars and had also chaperoned many roller skating parties of his children.

He is survived by his children, James (Linda) Blythe of Toledo, Joan (Jerry) Tope of Paulding, Dennis “Buck” (Sandi) Pratt of Ft. Jennings, Rocksanna (Terry) Daniels of Broughton and Stan (Deb) Pratt of Scott; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Blythe of Van Wert; a son-in-law, Larry Phillips of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; a brother, Albert Pratt of Oakwood; a sister, Alma Rhodes of Grover Hill; 17 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-stepgrandchildren; and a special friend of over 12 years, Annabet Cotterman.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald “Butch” Blythe; a daughter, Beverly I. Phillips; five brothers, Jason, David, Delmar, Paul and Rolland; seven sisters, Edna Pratt, Grace McCague, Alice Fulmer, Eleanor Runion, Ida Wyatt, Norma Showalter and Bonnie Gilford; and two grandsons, Mark A. Blythe and Cory L. Pratt.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert. Burial will be in the Scott Cemetery in Scott.

EDWIN MYERS 1948-2011

FINDLAY – Edwin F. Myers, 62, of Findlay, formerly of Oakwood, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29 at his residence.

He was born Oct. 11, 1948 in Paulding, the son of Ancel and Mildred (Coil) Myers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He loved cooking and was a cook in the Navy. After the Navy, he became a construction worker, a welder and a boilermaker.

Surviving are his mother, of Oakwood; three children, James Myers, Dean Myers and Christina Trimmer, all of Findlay; a granddaughter, Lea Rose Trimmer of Findlay; and 11 sisters and brothers, Marilyn (Pete) Wiseman of Ayersville, Madeline (Paul) Rosebrock of Southport, N.C., Melvin (Judy) Myers of Oakwood, Martin (Penny) Myers of Goodyear, Ariz., Marion Myers of Napoleon, Rolland (Judy) Myers of Oakwood, Robert (Gloria) Myers of Cecil, Marsha (Eddie) Shrider of Coldwater, Mich., Keith (Pam) Myers of Oakwood, Roger Myers of Defiance, and Jan (Mark) Peck of New Riegel.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, with the Rev. Ron Hoefacker officiating. Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery, Oakwood, with military rites by Defiance VFW.

MARGIE SHULZE 1920-2011

FREMONT, Ind. – Margie Irene Shulze, 91, of Fremont, Ind., died Friday, Aug. 26 at Lakeland Skilled Nursing Center, Angola, Ind.

She was born June 4, 1920 in Paulding, the daughter of Edward A. and Otillia (Parr) Tempel. On June 14, 1946, she married Phillip H. Shulze, who preceded her in death in 2004. She worked at G.E. Corp. in Fort Wayne, retiring in February 1976. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fort Wayne.

Surviving are a son, Jack E. Shulze of Fremont, Ind.; and four grandchildren, Brian Amans of St. Petersburg, Fla., Erica Amans of Fort Wayne, Cassie Amans of Evansville, Ind. and Gregg Shulze, Columbus.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Amans; and a stepson, Phillip Gregg Shulze.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Weicht Funeral Home, Angola, with Father Bernard Zajdel officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding.

FREDERICK SCHMIDT 1954-2011

PETTISVILLE – Frederick William Schmidt, age 56, of Pettisville, passed away Monday, Aug. 29 at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Care Center.

He was born Nov. 22, 1954 in Paulding, the son of Junnie Ray and Dorothy Alice (Squibb) Schmidt. On March 13, 1992, he married his wife Sheree and she survives. Schmidt had been employed by IAC in Wauseon as a maintenance mechanic. He enjoyed trains, guns and shooting, fixing things, riding his bike and was a history buff. He also enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids. He attended Solid Rock Community Church in West Unity.

Also surviving are his children, Connie (Jon) Rice of Sylvania, Ann (Jeremy) Merillat of Fayette, Michael (Melinda) Schmidt of Cecil and Crystal (Brian) Jones of Bryan; eight grandchildren, Tyler and Luc Rice, Taylor, Brett, Chloe and Lauryn Merillat, Blake Jones and Madison Schmidt; and two brothers, Ronald (Rita) Schmidt of Paulding and Jeffrey (Bernie) Schmidt of Defiance.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3  at the Solid Rock Community Church in West Unity. Interment services will be private. The Edgar-Grisier Funeral Home in Wauseon is in charge of arrangements.

HIRIAM SMITH 1938-2011

PAULDING – Hiriam C. Smith, age 72, died Sunday, Aug. 28 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 22, 1938 in McNeill, Miss., the son of C.T. and Lena (Fraizer) Smith. On Jan. 15, 1960, he married Cathrin Perry, who survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired as supervisor for Lafarge Corporation in 2001 and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Paulding and a life member of Paulding VFW Post #587.

Also surviving are a son, Tracy Smith, Paulding; a daughter, Regena (Gerald) Butler, Euless, Texas; a sister, Mary Ann Malley, McNeill, Miss.; two grandchildren, Randall (Angie) Smith of Norfolk, Va. and Shawna Smith, Paulding; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Lyla Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Pearlie Melvin.

Esther Viola Caryer, 85, formerly of Wren, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Convoy.

She was born Feb. 10, 1926 in Paulding County, the daughter of George A. and Nora (Little) Burris. On Dec. 1, 1945, she married Leo T. Caryer Jr., who preceded her in death June 21, 2005.

Surviving are three daughters, Marilyn Neate of Convoy, Marcelene (Richard) Price of Ohio City and Peggy (Danny) Miller of Mount Vernon, Ky.; three grandsons, Christopher (Angie) Swygart of North Vernon, Ind. and Matthew Swygart and David Schaadt, both of Rockford; a granddaughter, Macayla Miller of Mount Vernon, Ky.; eight great-grandchildren, Brett, Sydney, Mollie, Samantha and Mason Swygart and Sarah, Johnaton and Cecelia Schaadt; and three sisters, Marge Powless, Alice Fleck and Janette Waltmire.

She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Clark, Irene Manley and Nancy Yenser; and a brother, Calvin Burris.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert with Pastor Carol Tumbleson, from Countryside Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

ANTWERP – Judith Edna Powell, 65, of Antwerp, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23  at her residence.

She was born Dec. 21, 1945 in Fort Wayne, the daughter John and Ercal (Brown) Tuto. She was a nursing assistant at Dallas Lamb Foundation Home and member of Family Christian Center, Defiance.

Surviving are her children, Teresa (Skip) Richhart and Shawn (Ruth) Powell, both of Antwerp; a brother, John (Jo) Tuto, Antwerp; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Connie Bergman.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with visitation one hour prior to services.

LAURA BURDEN 1930-2011

PAYNE – Laura Charlene Burden, 81, of Payne, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 20 at her residence.

She was born May 16, 1930 in Cincinnati, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Glahn) Cobb. She was a faithful member of Payne Church of the Nazarene. In 1962, she married her husband of 49 years, Ferd Burden Jr., who survives. They raised their family in Payne all of their married life. She loved cooking and passed that love onto her children and grandchildren. She loved to read and visit with family and friends, along with attending her grandchildren’s concerts, plays and recitals and telling them stories of when she was young and was always quick to say, “We love ya!” when the visit was over.

Also surviving are a daughter, Holly Jones of Payne; three sons, Ty John (Marcella) of Tooele, Utah, and David (Suzie) and Jay Paul (Shellie), both of Fort Wayne; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Cobb of Cincinnati.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rachel Belle, and siblings, Sandra Fields and Gary Cobb.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 at Payne Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Mike Harper officiating. Burial will be in Wiltsie Cemetery. Dooley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DEFIANCE – Anne Contreraz, age 48, died Wednesday, Aug. 17 at Parkview Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

She was born Oct. 7, 1962 in Paulding, Ohio the daughter of Ambrosio and Rebecca (Perez) Contreraz.

She is survived by her mother, Rebecca (Efrain H.) Canales, Defiance; friend, Juan Hernandez, Defiance; and a niece, Brenna Contreraz, Ft. Wayne, IN.

She is preceded in death by her father and a brother, Andrew Contreraz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Paulding, with Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

HAVILAND – Helen E. Griffis, age 80, died Sunday, Aug. 14 at her residence.

She was born Oct. 13, 1930 in Haviland, the daughter of the Rev. Howard J. and Alice (Holmes) Tomlinson. On Jan. 9, 1949, she married Burns L. Griffis, who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1991. She was owner/operator of Tipton Store, retiring in 2000 after 40 years. She was a member of Country Chapel United Methodist Church, Haviland.

She is survived by two sons, Wade (Susan) Griffis of Jenson, Mich., and Hugh (Anita) Griffis, Tipp City; a daughter, Paula (David) Alderfer, Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister, Carolyn Joan (Lester) Sherer, Haviland; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Harold E. Tomlinson.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in Blue Creek Cemetery, Haviland.

DOYL MOHR 1922-2011

HAVILAND – Doyl Remus Mohr, age 89, died at 7:23 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at Inpatient Services/Hospice of Defiance.

He was born April 24, 1922 in Blue Creek Township, Paulding County, the son of Remus E. and Grace F. (Kinkade) Mohr. On Nov. 22, 1942, he married Beulah E. Danklefsen, who preceded him in death April 1, 2008. He was the owner and operator of Mohr’s of Scott, retiring in 1989 after 36 years. He was active in the Country Chapel United Methodist Church of Haviland and the Beach United Methodist Church of Fort Myers Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #48 of Van Wert, Masonic Lodge and Commandery. He was a former member of the Scott Lions Club, a past fire chief of Scott Fire Department and was an EMT. Through his lifetime, he donated 20 gallons of blood through the American Red Cross.

He and his wife were members of the Airstream Club, WBCCI and enjoyed traveling in their Airstream all over the country. His hobbies included singing in the church choir, walking, traveling, playing cards and working with stained glass. For 30 years, Doyl and Beulah spent their winters in Fort Myers, Fla.

Surviving are two daughters, Lynn (Jerry) Fensler of Defiance and Lois (Richard) Schmucker of Pioneer; a son, Stanley (Myria) Mohr of Latty; six grandchildren, Marcus (Julie) Fensler of Lapel, Ind., Amy (Jack) Johnson of Bryan, Tina Mohr of Fort Wayne, Crista Mohr of New Haven, Jennifer Vicente of Maumee and Julie (Josh) Trust of Dover, Del.; six great-grandchildren, Daulton, Garrett and Marc Ryan Fensler, Jack and Julia Vicente, and Jack Trust; a sister, Janet Hockenberry of Haviland; and a sister-in-law, Sally Mohr of Van Wert.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Mohr; and his brother-in-law, Cloy Hockenberry.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at the Country Chapel United Methodist Church, Haviland, with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Scott Cemetery.

JEFFREY SHORT

CINCINNATI – Jeffrey Alan Short, 51, of Cincinnati, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011.

He was the son of Colenzo and Joy (Hesselschwardt) Short. He was married to Brigid (Graham) Hanson, who survives. He grew up in Fayette,where he attended high school as a member of the Class of 1978, and graduated from Ohio State University. He was a devoted friend to countless people from Fayette to the West Coast and lived his life with a passion that was infectious.

He is also survived by a son, Alex Hanson of Cincinnati; his mother-in-law, Mary Graham of Cincinnati; his siblings, Jerry (Linda) Short of Fayette, Jon (Judi) Short of Antwerp, Julie (Mark) Schumacher, Maureen (Pat) Gray and JoAnn Graham of Cincinnati; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Terry Lee Short; and his grandparents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Fayette with Father Gary Ferguson as celebrant.

ARLENE WOBLER 1939-2011

CARMEL, Ind. – Arlene Wobler, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, age 72, of Carmel, Ind., passed away Sunday, Aug. 14 at her residence.

She was born Jan. 24, 1939 in Payne, the daughter of  Frank and Isabelle (Wetli) Zuber. Arlene blessed this world and the people she met with her many talents. She left her legacy using her hands and her imagination in her paintings (of Payne), handmade rustic crafts, papier-mâché dolls and her wood carved figurines. Arlene loved spending time with family and friends, camping, cooking, travel, sewing and quilting.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Gary; five children, Terry, Andy, Saundra, Julie and Kathy; seven grandchildren, Dylan, Koleton, James, Cassidy, Kaleb, Holly and Morgan; and three siblings, Beatrice Karr and Leonard and Russell Zuber.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Payne. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.

PAULDING – Lucille Proxmire, age 91, died Thursday, Aug. 11 at The Gardens of Paulding.

She was born Oct. 30, 1919 in Paulding, The daughter of Dorie and Blanche (Clouse) Bryan. On Nov. 24, 1949, she married Leo A. Proxmire, who preceded her in death in 1999. She was employed by Paulding Telephone Company for 20 years.

She is survived by a sister, Thais Stallbaum, Paulding, and nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by a son, John W. “Bill” Mees; a daughter, Patty Mees; four brothers, Forrest “Ducky”, Kenny, Eugene “Tuffy”, and Robert; and a sister, Catherine Sontchi.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. until time of services on Aug. 16 at the funeral home.

SAM JEFFERY 1930-2011

PAULDING – Samuel O. Jeffery, age 80, of Paulding, died at 2:14 p.m., Aug. 10, at Mercy Hospital in Defiance.

He was born Dec. 18, 1930, the son of Dorris and Alma (Gordon) Jeffery. On July 3, 1947, he married Nancy Royer, who survives in Paulding. He was a member of the National Guard for four years, serving in Germany during the Korean War. He managed the family farm and then worked as a sales rep for Stoneco, retiring in 1997. He had also served as a county commissioner for eight years, the Paulding County Fair Board for 10 years and was on the Paulding Village council for 19 years. He was a member of the Paulding United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid hunter. He especially loved to go pheasant hunting with his son, Greg, and their dog, Kelly. He was involved with horse racing for over 20 years and loved animals.

Also surviving are two sons, Greg (Carol) Jeffery of Paulding and Blake Jeffery of Indianapolis; a daughter, Becky Mayer of Paulding; 11 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Paulding United Methodist Church with Pastor Ben Lowell officiating. Burial will be in the Live Oak Cemetery. Harter and Schier Funeral Home in Delphos is in charge of the arrangements.

Hours of visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Paulding and one hour prior to services at the church.

Preferred memorials may be directed to the Paulding County Senior Center, Paulding United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association.

 

ENOCH SAYLOR SR. 1935-2011

OAKWOOD – Enoch F. Saylor Sr., 75, of Oakwood, died Wednesday, Aug. 10 at Laurels of Defiance.

He was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Grover Hill, the son of Anthony S. and Ilo May (Coble) Saylor. On July 31, 1954, he married Claris L. Goings, who preceded him in death Aug. 13, 2002. He worked at GM Powertrain, retiring in August 1991, and attended Bible Baptist Church, Grover Hill.

Surviving are two sons, Frank Saylor of Indiana and Brian (Beverly) Saylor, Oakwood; four daughters, Gladys Saylor of Columbus, Darlene Arnett of Gary, Ind., Kendra English of Paulding and Regina Sue (John) Matthis, Pell City, Ala.; a brother, Dave (Jackie) Saylor, Defiance; a sister, May (John) Phost, Scott; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Bob Saylor; three grandchildren, Keith and Matthew Saylor and Alfrank Arnett; a great-grandchild, Brandon Eugene Roddy-Saylor; a brother, Paul Ladd; and three sisters, Betty Joan Stuckey, Helen English and Ocie (Roughton) Shafer.

Services were held Saturday, Aug. 13 at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with the Rev. Pat Holt officiating. Burial was in Sherman Cemetery, Paulding County.

GWENDOLYN HEADLEY 1926-2011

HICKSVILLE – Gwendolyn Maxine (Limpert) Headley, 85, died early Monday Aug. 8 at Hickory Creek of Hicksville.

She was born Feb. 24, 1926 in Hicksville, the daughter of Lee and Dora (Miller) Limpert. She was a 1944 graduate of Hicksville High School. On Feb. 17, 1946, she was united in marriage to Leo Headley, who preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 2005. Gwen was an active lifelong member of the First Church of Christ in Hicksville. She served as deaconess, Sunday school secretary, Sunday school teacher, a choir member and the director. She also served as chairwoman of many funeral dinners for the church.

Gwen worked alongside her husband as a bookkeeper for the family businesses H&W Automotive and H&W Realty. Gwen was very active in the Hicksville Community. For many years, she was a Boy Scout den mother and was instrumental in forming a youth bowling league in Hicksville. She served on the Community Memorial Hospital Board and volunteered as a Gray Lady at the hospital. Gwen was a strong supporter of the Hicksville High School Athletic Boosters and Music Boosters. She seldom missed a ballgame or a band concert. Along with her husband, Leo, she was named co-chairperson for the “Citizens for a New School” committee. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and in 2001 she was named the Rotary Citizen of the Year.

In her spare time Gwen enjoyed cooking, sewing, bowling and taking care of her family.

Surviving are four sons, Michael (Roxanne), Mitchel (Marie), Greg (Christine) and Randy (Beth), all of Hicksville; five grandsons, Mike (Shawn), Matt, Jared (Angie), Brandon and Nathan; five granddaughters, Michele (Chad) Peter, Molly (Luke) Edwards, Melissa (Tyler) Stork, Jennifer and Megan; three great-granddaughters, Ashley and Mallory Peter and Sasha Headley; two great-grandsons, Lucas and Braden Headley; a half-sister, Betty (John) Olsen of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Lila Wittig of Hicksville.

Funeral services for Gwen will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11 at the First Church of Christ in Hicksville. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Hicksville.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10 at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville.

DEFIANCE – Rodney A. Webb Jr., age 20, of Defiance, died Sunday, July 24 in Paulding County as the result of an automobile crash.

He was born June 15, 1991 in Hicksville, the son of Rodney and Terri (Rhodes) Webb Sr. He was a 2010 graduate of Fairview High School, where he was involved in track and football. He was employed at Spartech in Paulding. He enjoyed being with friends, and loved Fairview High School and Ohio State football, playing guitars and music.

Surviving are his mother, Terri (Mike) Mosby of Kimmel, Ind.; his father, Rodney Sr. (Shelia Yoh) Webb of Defiance; brothers, Jacob Brooks of Defiance and Shawn Brooks, Christian Gibson, Zack Mosby, Cody Mosby and David Mosby, all of Kimmel, Ind.; sisters, Ashley Mosby of Kimmel, Ind., and Danielle Yoh of Defiance; paternal grandparents, Mike (Carol) Keezer of Defiance and Jeff (Sandy) Richie of McClure; and maternal grandmother Rosie Rhodes of Ligonier, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Max Rhodes; and his best friend, Alex Ellert.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at First Baptist Church in Defiance with the Rev. Tim Yazel officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.

CLAYTON HOWELL 1938-2011

PAULDING – Clayton E. Howell, 72, of Paulding, passed away Saturday, July 30 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 18, 1938 in Paulding, the son of Floyd and Lula Mae (Smith) Howell. On Dec. 4, 1958, he married Marjorie Harrow, who survives. He served in the U.S. Army and worked at BF Goodrich, Woodburn. He loved horse racing, Nascar and his Boston Terriers. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Paulding.

Also surviving are his children, Tonya Meyer and Robert Howell, both of Paulding, Marsha (Steve) Franklin of Antwerp, and Tammie Shrider and Daniel (Debra) Howell, both of Paulding; siblings, Genelta (Sam) Levos, Rita and Sandy Howell, all of Paulding, and Larry (Kathy) Grueter of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Judy Donnett; stepfather Robert Grueter; and stepmother Doris Howell.

His funeral service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Paulding, with the Rev. Karen Stetins officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Paulding.

ANTWERP – Regina Donnell, age 98, of Antwerp, passed away Sunday, July 31 at her residence.

She was born Feb. 8, 1913 in Antwerp, the daughter of Joseph and Daisy Mae (Zuber) Dunderman. In 1935, she married Arlie Donnell, who preceded her in death in 1985. She was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish of Paulding County.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy Clinton of Antwerp; a son, Jim of Antwerp; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Harmann; and a brother, Raymond Dunderman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Antwerp. Burial will be in Maumee Cemetery.

SCOTT – Tamela S. “Tammy” Gibson, 41, of Scott, died Wednesday, July 27, as the result of a car crash in Van Wert County.

She was born July 15, 1970 in Sandusky, the daughter of Linda L. (Funkhouser) Donaldson of Haviland and the late Alfred L. Meggitt. On Oct. 7, 1994, she married Jason Gibson, who survives in Scott. She owned and operated the Scott Variety Store.

Also surviving are her children, Lindsey N. and Alexis R. Gibson, both of Scott; her stepmother, Parketta Meggitt of Norwalk; her stepfather, Richard “Doder” Akom of Scott; her mother-in-law, Tolanda Mosier of Van Wert; father-in-law, Harold E. Gibson of New Port Richey, Fla.; three brothers, Robert L. Meggitt of Franklin, Ind., John W. Meggitt of Van Wert and A.G. (Christina) Meggitt of Norwalk; four sisters, Karen L. Meggitt, Laurie A. Bergman and Amy E. (Jeff) Cotterman, all of Scott, and Kristin R. (Dustin) Fitch of Sebring, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Lori (John) Banet of Holiday, Fla. and Susan (Weston) Mills of Van Wert; and 21 nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her stepmother-in-law, Patti Gibson; a brother-in-law, Mike Gibson; and two sisters, Cynthia and Susan Meggitt.

Dallas J.D.W.R. Ashworth, age one week, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born July 19 in Hicksville.

VAN WERT – Roger Dangler, 66, of Van Wert, died the morning of Monday, July 25 at his home.

He was born Aug. 28, 1944, in Van Wert, the son of Chester and Isabel (Kiggins) Dangler. He married Marcia Snyder, who survives in Van Wert. He retired from Herbert E. Orr Company in Paulding after 40 years.

BEVERLY PHILLIPS 1947-2011

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Beverly I. (Pratt) Phillips, 63, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., died Sunday, July 3 at the Jacksonville Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

She was born Oct. 22, 1947, the daughter of Joseph W. and Cydona (Jewell) Pratt. She graduated from Blue Creek High School in 1965. She married Larry Phillips and on June 26, 2011, they celebrated 46 years of marriage. He survives. She previously worked at Moose Haven (Empire Hall) as a supervisor.

Also surviving are her father, Joseph Pratt; a daughter, Kim (David) Beine of Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers and sisters, Jim (Linda) Blythe of Toledo, Dennis (Buck) Sandi Pratt of Fort Jennings, Stan (Deb) Pratt of Scott, Joan (Jerry) Tope of Paulding, Rocksanna (Terry) Daniels of Broughton, Ima (Don) Butler of Continental, Donald (Janet) Priest, William (Laura) Priest and Jeffrey (Wendy) Priest of Grover Hill, Ruth (Eddie) Noggle of Van Wert, Pamela Chadwick of Madison, Wis., Marilyn (Terry) Everly of Portage and Michele (John) Porter of Grover Hill; a sister-in-law, Sharon Blythe of Van Wert; her stepmother, Norma Priest of Grover Hill; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

ROBERT YOH 1928-2011

PAULDING – Robert E. Yoh, age 83, died Sunday, July 24 at Community Health Professionals Hospice, Defiance.

He was born March 29, 1928 in Adams County, Ind., the son of George W. and Florence N. (Friend) Yoh. He graduated from Oakwood High School in 1946. On May 16, 1947, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oakwood, he married Rose Mary Bussing, who preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2006. They had been married 64 years. He was employed by Compo Corporation, Defiance, retiring in 1992 after 45 years of service.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry Lee Yoh, Oakwood, and Robert L. Yoh, Defiance; two daughters, Mary (Dan) Mansfield, Defiance, and Susan (Henry) Dobbelaere, Oakwood; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary and William “Bill” Yoh; two sisters, Neocia Dimock and Yvonne Matli; and a granddaughter, Dawn Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 at Den Herder Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery, Charloe.

WILLIAM HESSLER 1927-2011

PAYNE – William J. Hessler, age 83, died Monday, July 25 at the Country Inn Enhanced Living Center, Paulding.

He was born Aug. 22, 1927 in Paulding County, the son of John D. and Lucile Ann (Clark) Hessler. On Nov. 29, 1952 he married Martha E. Snyder, who survives in Payne. He was employed by BF Goodrich, retiring in 1988, and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Payne, and the BF Goodrich Retirement Club.

Also surviving are six children, David (Dawn) Hessler of Milan, Mich., Michael (Deb) Hessler of Van Wert, John (Gina) Hessler of Payne, and Nancy Hessler, Janis Hessler and James Hessler, all of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Rose Mary Sharp of Rochester, Mich. and Marie Kilpatrick, Nashville; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Hessler; and a sister, Christina Zuber.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Payne. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Payne with military graveside rites accorded by Payne American Legion Post #297.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27 with a rosary service at 8 p.m. at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.

ROY SOUDERS JR. 1930-2011

VAN WERT – Roy Souders Jr., 81, Van Wert, died at 9:35 a.m. Thursday, July 21 at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born May 1, 1930, in Pocasset, Okla., the son of Roy A. and Fannie F. (Shipp) Souders. On May 28, 1955, he married Eleanor M. Branch, who survives in Van Wert. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War. In 1957, he graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma. He spent 35 years in the property and liability insurance industry. He was a member of the professional Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters, CPCU. In 1991, he received a national honor by the Society when he was selected a Standard Setter for his contributions to the insurance industry and his community. The last 26 years of his career was spent as an employee of The Central Insurance Companies of Van Wert. He retired in 1992 as senior vice president-operations.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. He was founder of the Van Wert Chapter of Compassionate Friends and served as leader for over 10 years, then three years as northwest Ohio regional coordinator. He served as a member of the board of directors for the YMCA and the Wassenberg Art Center, and was a trustee for the Van Wert County Hospital. He was a recipient of the Ray Miller Award from the Van Wert Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Van Wert Rotary Club.

Other survivors include a daughter, Becky (Rick) Craft of Paulding; two brothers, Robert E. (Marjorie) Souders of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Richard W. (Nancy) Souders of Pocasset, Okla.; a sister, Oleta F. Salek of Midwest City, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Jason R. Craft, Lauren R. Craft and Amanda G. Craft.

He was preceded in death by a son, Neal B. Souders.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, at First United Methodist Church, Van Wert. The Revs. Gus Christo-Baker and Paul Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.

The family will receive friends after the service.

RICHARD “DICK” “ACE” ADAMS 1933-2011

OAKWOOD – Richard “Dick” “Ace” Adams, 78, of Oakwood, died at 5:41 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born July 6, 1933 in Oakwood, the son of Virgil V. and Ruby Floella (Clay) Adams. On Dec. 6, 1959, he married Clara May Linnabary, who preceded him in death Aug. 25, 2005. He retired in 1995 after working 35 years at General Motors in Defiance. He was a member of Twin Oaks United Methodist Church, Oakwood. He was an Army veteran. Dick was a life member of Oakwood American Legion Post #341 and Grover Hill VFW Post #2873, and a member of Defiance Elks. He was a past county commander of the American Legion. He worked at the library and he umpired for many years for Acme and high school baseball leagues in the Oakwood area. He ran the Labor Day softball tournament for many years in Oakwood and later the tournament was named after him.

Surviving are his children, April Wassermann of Findlay, Matt Adams of Defiance and Ricky Adams of Napoleon; two grandchildren, Jill (Jared) Lerch and Zachary Wassermann; and a great-grandchild: Adelina Lerch.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a granddaughter, Holly Wassermann; a half-brother, Max Adams; and two half-sisters, Yulida Forney and Erma Dix.

Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, with Pastor Eric Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery, Oakwood with military rites by Oakwood American Legion.

He was born May 9, 1949 in Paulding County, the son of Alvin and Emma “Katie” (Yenser) Brown. He was a heavy equipment operator for Webb Bros. Construction and had been a truck driver for Five Span Marina. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era. He spent 15 years as a member of the Auglaize Volunteer Fire Department, from January 1978 to January 1993. He was a life member of the Defiance VFW Post #336 and the Defiance AmVets; a member of the Defiance Eagles and a member of the Auglaize Emerald Fox Club.

He is survived by his mother, of Junction; his significant other, Delores Vaughn of Oakwood; three children, Tammy (Kenny) Theisen and Steve (Kaylin) Brown, both of New Bavaria, and Doug (Renae) Brown of Evansport; five stepchildren, Melissa Ranes of Grover Hill, Thomas Gee and Melony (Tony Barham) Gee, both of Oakwood, and Nathan (Kim Marin) Gee and Crystal Gee, both of Melrose; four grandchildren, Brok and Kacee Theisen and Will and Taylor Brown; 13 stepgrandchildren; one great-stepgrandchild; three sisters, Lora Lee (Bud) Ratliff of Oakwood, Wanda (Cecil) Curry of Foster, Ala., and Kelly (Kirk) Hale of Northport, Ala.; and a brother, Alvin Ray (Becky) Brown of Junction.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, with Pastor Chuck Schmunk officiating. Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery, Oakwood, with military rites by Defiance VFW and AmVets.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday, July 22 and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

REGIS STUCK 1942-2011

ANTWERP – Regis Stuck, of Antwerp, passed away Tuesday, July 19, at Saint Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born Feb. 9, 1942 in Adena, the son of the late Walter and Kathryn (Doyle) Stuck. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68. On May 23, 1970, he married Darlene Parrett, who survives. He worked as a brick mason and then a truck driver.

Also surviving are a son, Michael, Antwerp; a granddaughter, A.J., Antwerp; two brothers, William of Zanesville and Bernard of Newark; and a sister, Boots Spear of Fort Wayne.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23 at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp. He will be laid to rest at Bethel Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 22, and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

WAYNE HITTLE 1936-2011

PAULDING – LeRoy “Wayne” Hittle, age 74, died Thursday, July 14 at Inpatient Hospice Center, Van Wert.

He was born Dec. 20, 1936 in Middle Point, the son of Roy and Cleo (Evans) Hittle. On Nov. 7, 1970, he married Carol Sue Fockler, who preceded him in death on May 17, 1998. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam Era, honorably discharged as a sharp shooting sergeant. He was one of 20 first class engineers and boiler operators in the state of Ohio. He retired from the city of St. Marys, Falstaff Brewing Co., Pet Milk and Advanced Auto. He was an avid welder and auto mechanic. He was a member of RC Airplane Club and Radio Ham Operator (EMA) Amateur Radio, Van Wert.

He is survived by his children, Kami Wagner of Montpelier, Kari (Jeff) Young of Van Wert, Saundra Wagner of Montpelier, Sheryl (Jim) Coon of New Bremen, Tamara (Todd) Germain of Fort Wayne and Jeff Hittle of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his faithful companions, Cocoa and Princess.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael W. Hittle.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21 at Den Herder Funeral Home. Burial will be in Paulding Memorial Cemetery with military graveside services accorded by VFW Post #587.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

CLIFFORD HUMMELL 1927-2011

GROVER HILL – Clifford Dean Hummell, age 84, died Saturday, July 16 at The Gardens of Paulding.

He was born Feb. 20, 1927 in Paulding County, the son of Noel and Prescillia (Parsons) Hummell. On Dec. 24, 1946, he married Lou Ann Welch, who survives. He was employed as a foreman by Masolite in Fort Wayne, and was a farmer. Clifford loved woodworking and created many treasured pieces of art from wood. In the winter, you might find him working on a 1,500-piece jigsaw puzzle and enjoying time with his family. During the summer months he spent many days fishing at his cottage at Huyck Lake, Mich. He was also an avid gardener, and grew many different varieties of vegetables and fruits.

Also surviving are two daughters, Janis (Danny) Price of Defiance and Deb Paputsakis, Paulding; a sister, Marjorie Phlipot, Paulding; grandchildren, Kylee (Joe) McMichael, Drew Price, Sara Paputsakis and Rachel (Steven) Binnix; and great-grandchildren, Grant and Savannah McMichael.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 26 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will be in Middle Creek Cemetery, Grover Hill.

DEFIANCE – Brandon Eugene Roddy Saylor died on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the Defiance Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 12 at the Defiance Regional Medical Center, the son of Brandon L. Saylor and Amanda Roddy, who both survive.

He is also survived by a brother, Aiden Brice DeWaters; three sisters, Faith Lynn Saylor, Trinity Claris Rose Saylor and Allie Renee Saylor; grandparents, Brian (Beverly) Saylor of Melrose, Robert Roddy Jr. of Defiance, and Jenny (Doug) Albert of Defiance; great-grandparents, Drew and Katherine Fouchea of Sparta, Mich., Robert and Donna Roddy Sr., Chuck and Janice Sisco and Dinah Scott, all of Defiance, Enouch Saylor of Oakwood and Velma Albert of Oakwood; and an uncle, Trevor Lee Saylor and his fiancé, Brianna Watson, of Oakwood.

He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Claris Saylor, Charles Scott Sr. and Forrest Albert.

Services were held Monday, July 18, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance with the Rev. David Brobston officiating. Burial was in the Sherman Cemetery in Paulding.

OTTAWA – Antonia “Toni” Ruth Doster, age 21, died Wednesday, July 13 from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

She was born Sept. 12, 1989 in Defiance County, the daughter of Robert E. and Lisa J. (Shellenbarger) Doster. She was employed by Innovative Support Services.

She is survived by her mother, Lisa (Terry) Morrow, Paulding; her father, Robert E. Doster, Dupont; a brother, Stephen Doster, Columbus Grove; two sisters, Bobbi Doster of Paulding and Amanda Doster, Defiance; four nephews and a niece; and half brothers and sisters, Austin, Jessie, Madison, Robert Jr. and Caleb.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kenneth and Roberta (Schlegel) Shellenbarger and Robert and Marilyn (Kittle) Doster; and a nephew, Johnnathan Hobbs.

OAKWOOD – Veta V. Holt, 83, of Oakwood, died 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 13 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Dec. 13, 1927 in Defiance, the daughter of Wallace and Inza (Boucher) Relyea Sr. On Jan. 12, 1947, she married Clyde G. Holt, who preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1990. She was a homemaker and a member of Prairie Chapel Bible Church, Oakwood. She taught Sunday school for 40 years and was an avid seamstress.

Surviving are three children, Connie (Gary) Harter of Oakwood, Patrick (Marcia) Holt of Grover Hill and Sandra (Rodney) Taylor of Continental; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Richard (Marlene) Metz of Bryan, Wallace (Pat) Relyea Jr. of Continental, Paul (Betty) Relyea of Defiance and Marvin “Pete” (Linda) Relyea of Paulding; and four sisters, Revella (Harold) Buchanan of Defiance, Reba (George) Hahn and Carolyn Carnahan, both of Bryan, and Marilyn (Homer) Greear of Sherwood.

PAULDING – James D. Scott Sr., age 64, died Friday, July 15.

He was born Oct. 18, 1946 in Paulding, the son of Ora L. and Ethel Sara (Ranes) Scott. On Sept. 3, 1966, he married Donna J. Fabian, who survives. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was employed by American Electric Power, retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Paulding Church of the Nazarene, lifetime member of Paulding VFW Post #587, and the NRA.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kimberly (Josh) Grimes of Oakwood and Kristina (Jamie) Varner, Paulding; a son, James (Theresa) Scott, Huntertown, Ind.; three brothers, Bernard (Sharon) Scott of Van Wert, Frank Scott of Parrotsville, Tenn. and Lewis (Annabelle) Scott, Texas; a sister, Doris Grubb, Paulding; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene Haney; and a grandson, Kyle Varner.

KATHY KRUGER, DO 1962-2011

DEFIANCE – Kathy L. Kruger, DO, 49, of Defiance, died Monday, July 11 at Defiance Regional Medical Center.

She was born April 2, 1962, in Moundsville, W.Va., the daughter of Sandy Fischer. On Aug. 16, 1984, she married George “Dan” Kruger, who survives. She was a science teacher from 1984-90 in Virginia and West Virginia. She was a graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and became a DO in 1994. She did her undergraduate training at West Liberty University and OB/GYN was her specialty. She worked as a secretary at St. John United Church of Christ, Defiance, where she was also a member of its consistory. She enjoyed and loved her family and her children were of the ultimate importance.

Also surviving are her mother, Sandy Lefkay, Moundsville, W.Va.; a son, Christian Jeremy Kruger, at home; a daughter, Laura Rose Kruger, at home; two brothers, Brian (Ginger) Lefkay of Santee, Calif., and Scott (Tracy) Lefkay, Wheeling, W.Va.; and a sister, Linda (William) Smith, Davis, W.Va.

Preceding her in death was a sister, Lisa Deutch.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16 at St. John United Church of Christ, Defiance, with the Rev. Dr. William R. Nirote officiating.

LEE SHEPHERD 1954-2011

ANTWERP – Lee Shepherd, 57, of Antwerp, passed away Monday, July 11 at Parkview Hospital.

He was a devoted brother, a loving uncle and great-uncle. He was born April 8, 1954 in Gunlock, Ky., the son of Monroe and Audrey Shepherd. He was a 1971 graduate from Upper Scioto Valley High School and a member of the Antwerp First Baptist Church. Lee worked various jobs mostly as a welder. He enjoyed working on cars, lawn mowers and anything with a motor. Lee was always willing to help out his family and neighbors not asking for anything in return. He was a good man with the love of Jesus in his heart, and would spread the word of salvation to anyone that would listen.

Surviving are a brother, Sam of Antwerp; and seven sisters, Cora Evans of Paulding, Pat (Bill) Sutton of Hicksville, Kathy (Mike) Lowe of Grabill, Ind., Ethel (Truman) Handshoe of Hueysville, Ky., Barb (Philburt) Hull of Cecil, and Martha Shepherd and Shirley (Whitey) McMichael, both of Antwerp.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Cynthia Howard; and a niece, Amanda Shepherd.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at the First Baptist Church in Antwerp with the Rev. Todd Murray officiating. Burial will be in the Maumee Cemetery. Dooley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GROVER HILL – Lloyd George Elston, 86, died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Country Inn in Latty.

He was born in Grover Hill and was a farmer and factory worker for International Harvester, retiring in 1979. He served with integrity in many roles as a member of Zion United Methodist Church and as Washington Township Trustee. He was a faithful, hardworking husband and loving, generous father and papa. He loved time with family playing games and became euchre champ in his retirement village. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds and Wayne Trace High School sports. He also enjoyed traveling in the U.S.

Surviving are his wife, Orpha (Corkwell); three daughters, Candice Elliott of Paulding, Lauretta (William) Aseltine of Middletown, R.I. and Lisa (Matthew) Nichols of Berwyn Heights, Md.; two sons, Chris (Rebecca) Elston of Van Wert and Jonathan (Lavonne) Elston of Lambertville, Mich.; four sisters, Lois (Kenneth) Kohn of Van Wert, Colleen Cook of Monroeville, Ind., and Eileen (Noel) Thomas and Rosalie (Roger) McClure of Grover Hill; two brothers, Don (Dessie) Elston of Grover Hill and Gary (Cathy) Elston of Montgomery, Texas; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren and five great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter and a brother, Randy Elston.

MELROSE – Eldine Conley Smith, age 74, of Denton, Texas and formerly of Melrose, died at 3:37 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 24, 1937 in Shivley, W.Va., the daughter of Wilson and Hattie (Riddle) Conley. On April 10, 1951, she married Jack “Janet” Smith, who preceded her in death in 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of Paulding Church of Christ.

Surviving are three children, Ronald (Kristine) Smith of Montpelier and Jack (Patricia) Smith and Kathy (Rick) Porter, both of Denton, Texas; five grandchildren, Jamie, Josh, Ricky, Jeremy and Jackelyn; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Olive Payne of Pecks Mill, W.Va., Jewell Farley of Harts, W.Va., Zella Strollings of Chapman, W.Va. and Juanita Harriman of Caldwell, W.Va.; and a brother, Homer Timmie Conley of Caldwell.

GROVER HILL – Eleanor Jean Edwards, age 83, died Thursday, June 30.

She was born Nov. 6, 1927 in Van Wert County, the daughter of Charles and Mary G. (Bell) Moore. On March 21, 1947, she married Robert E. Edwards, who preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 1999. She was formerly Paulding County Clerk of Courts, retiring in 2005. She attended Country Chapel United Methodist Church, Haviland. She was a member of VFW Post #3740 Auxiliary, Ottoville; American Legion Post #297 Auxiliary, Payne, where she was a 33-year member; Paulding County Democratic Party and Paulding County Election Board; Sorority Beta Sigma Phi Club 37, Van Wert; and the former VFW #2873 Auxiliary, Grover Hill. She was a volunteer for American Red Cross and United Way of Paulding County.

She is survived by five children, Barb Bell of Phoenix, Gary (Kathleen) Edwards of Ottawa, Pamela (Robin) Eberle of Ottoville and Michael (Patty) Edwards and Terry “Smoke” (Pamela) Edwards, both of Grover Hill; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffery Allen Coil; a granddaughter, Candace Jean Edwards; and a sister, Leora Young.

GEORGE VOGEL 1934-2011

DEFIANCE – George C. Vogel, 77, of Defiance, died Tuesday, June 28 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee.

He was born April 16, 1934 in Defiance County, the son of Henry and Irene (Dirr) Vogel. On July 18, 1964, he married Lauretta L. Rupert, who preceded him in death Feb. 28, 2006. A 1952 graduate of Ayersville High School, he was furnace chief at Johns Manville for 47 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Defiance Eagles, Bryan Eagles, AmVets #1991 and was president of the Johns Manville retirees for six years. He also was a president and trustee of the Fish & Game Club and taught a hunting course for 16 years. He volunteered for the Red Cross for 19 years.

Surviving are a son, George A. Vogel of Defiance; a brother, Glen of Defiance; and two sisters, Dorothy Lang of Hicksville and Rose Conkey of Hicksville.

Also preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Evelyn Bosiak; and three brothers, Wilbur, Victor and Rogel.

LUDDY KEATING

ANTWERP – Ludmila M. “Luddy” Keating, 59, of Antwerp, died Saturday, June 25, 2011 at her residence.

She was born in Hicksville, the daughter of Joseph and Ludmila (Kozumplik) Adams. On Sept. 13, 1976, she became the beautiful wife of Kenny Keating, who survives. Luddy lived her life with purpose and integrity. She touched the hearts of many who knew her with her warm smile. She enjoyed sailing as well as raising and planting flowers. Through their ownership of Bailey’s Meadow and Keating’s Professional Paperhanging, Luddy and Kenny brightened many of our homes and gardens. Luddy was also a gifted artist and renowned sailor. Her true and lasting love was her husband, Kenny and her entire family. Luddy was a member of the Antwerp Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses with many spiritual brothers and sisters who loved her very much.

Also surviving are siblings, John, Ben, Victor, Paul, Carl and Joe Adams, Ruth Herman, Helen Keane and Mary Ann Brinegar.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard Adams.

FINDLAY – Donald C. Sloop, 66, of Findlay, died at 8:33 a.m. Sunday, June 26 at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay.

He was born May 11, 1945, in Findlay, the son of Dr. Ronald C. and Mary K. (Williamson) Sloop. He was a doctor of chiropractic, having graduated from the Palmer Chiropractic School in Davenport, Iowa. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served our country in Vietnam, and was a member of VFW #5645. Don retired from the Kuss Corp./Cummins Corp. He was engaged to Angie Engard of North Baltimore, who survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Mary K. Sloop of Findlay; his former wife, Sandra Coleman, and daughters, Amanda and Melinda Sloop, all of Indiana; a sister, Debra K. (Evan) Follas of Fishers, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

His father preceded him in death.

JAMES JOHNSON 1931-2011

ANTWERP – James William Johnson, 79, of Antwerp, passed away Tuesday, June 21, at The Gardens of Paulding.

He was born Aug. 14, 1931 in Fort Wayne, the son of Kenneth and Violet (Knight) Johnson. On Aug. 16, 1949, he married Martha Reeb, who survives. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and worked in construction. He was a social member of Antwerp VFW Post 5087.

Also surviving are two sons, William of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Russell of Antwerp.

PAUL SHINNERS 1931-2011

CECIL – Paul L. Shinners, 80, of Cecil, died Monday, June 20 at the Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center in Defiance.

He was born May 1, 1931, in Henry County, the son of Thomas and Caroline (Kammeyer) Shinners. On Oct. 26, 1957, he married Rita R. Shininger, who preceded him in death. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was engaged in farming and was a machine operator for Defiance Precision Products for 37 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of Divine Mercy, Antwerp Campus. He was a former member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Defiance, where he served as an usher.

He is survived by four sons, David (Waranyoo) of Howell, Mich., Michael (Shelley) of Arthur, James (Amy) of Auburn, Ind. and Kevin (fiancé Michelle Kaptur) Shinners of Livonia, Mich.; a daughter, Joyce (Mike) Stecher of Mark Center; four grandchildren; a brother, Richard “Dick” Shinners of Wauseon; and a sister, Donnabelle (Robert) Schwarzbeck of Grand Rapids, Mich.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick Shinners.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral home in Defiance with Father Allan G. Fillman officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Defiance with military rites conducted by VFW Post 3360.

Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at the funeral home. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

JACK PRINE 1931-2011

OAKWOOD – Jack L. Prine, 80, of Oakwood, formerly of Spencerville, died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 21 at St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

He was born Jan. 31, 1931 in Delphos, the son of Clifford and Nora (Stopher) Prine. He worked as a self-employed masonry contractor until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, especially flowers. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially Colleen.

He is survived by his beloved companion, Colleen Jeffers, of Oakwood; four children, Jack (Bonita) Prine of Dayton and Randy (Virginia) Prine, Mary Blanchard and Chad Prine, all of Spencerville; a daughter-in-law, Jeannine Prine, of Spencerville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Betty) Prine of Delphos; a sister, Norma (Donald) Moore of Grover Hill; a brother-in-law, Alfred Honigford of Ft. Jennings; and a sister-in-law, Mary Prine of Tulsa, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Micky; and siblings Lorraine Carder, Herschel Prine, Twila Ball, William Prine, Margaret Honigford and Richard, Melvin and Larry Prine.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 24 at the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville.

CAREY HAWKINS 1976-2011

TIFFIN – Carey Hawkins, age 35, of Tiffin, died Sunday June 19 at her parents’ home in Fostoria.

She was born May 4, 1976 in Kettering, the daughter of Neal and Kay “Jean” (McOwen) Hawkins. She was manager and tax accountant for H&R Block in Tiffin and was also an artist, sculptor and painter. She was a 1994 graduate of Arcadia High School and attended Owens Community College in Findlay. She was an avid wildlife lover and received a wildlife rehabilitation license and worked as a former veterinarian tech.

Surviving are her parents; a brother, Jared Hawkins of Portage; a sister, Laura Maki, Tiffin; and nephew, Aaron Maki, Tiffin.

Funeral services will be held today, June 22 at Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria. Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 25, at St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding. Den Herder Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

FRANCES COMER 1920-2011

PAYNE – Frances L. Comer, 90, of Payne, passed away Saturday, June 18 at The Gardens of Paulding.

She was born Oct. 27, 1920 in Payne, the daughter of Frank W. and Bertha M. (Harden) Zartman. On Nov. 21, 1953, she married Ken Comer, who preceded her in death Jan. 16, 1998. She worked at Rea Magnet Wire and restaurants in Payne and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Payne.

Surviving are three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Doretta Kinnaley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 21 at Dooley Funeral Home, Payne, with visitation one hour prior to her service. Burial will be in Lehman Cemetery.

WALTER LANG 1945-2011

GROVER HILL – Walter Floyd Lang, 66, of Grover Hill, died at 4:50 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at the Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert.

He was born March 27, 1945, in Defiance, Ohio, the son of Paul Clarence and Donelda (Dirr) Lang, who both preceded him in death. On Feb. 26, 1965, he married Elma Jean Farris, who survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a truck driver for Sims Cabs in Payne. He is affiliated with the Pioneer Christian Ministries of Paulding.

He is also survived by three sons, Everett of Brussels, Wis., Walter Richard of Ravenna and Thaddeus Lang of Grover Hill; two daughters, Beth Ann Ross and Donelda Klewer, both of Cloverdale; two brothers, Robert Lang and Alonzo Dirr, both of Defiance; two sisters, Rachel Post and Sally Yocklin, both of Defiance; and 13 grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Ralph “Buster” and Donald Lang; and four sisters, Mary Leonard, Doris Bauman, Norma Lee Lang and Ruth Ann Lang.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at Pioneer Christian Ministries, located at 17936, Road 108, Paulding with Pastor Chuck Oliver officiating. Cowan and Son Funeral Home in Van Wert is in charge of the arrangements.

DOROTHY PHLIPOT 1929-2011

PAULDING – Dorothy S. Phlipot, age 81, died Wednesday, June 15 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Sept. 6, 1929 in Rock Island, Ill., the daughter of Axel and Rosa Mary (Layer) Wickstandt. On Feb. 26, 1952, she married Harold A. Phlipot, who survives. She was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Paulding, and the Altar Rosary Society. She was previously employed by Paulding County Senior Center, the former Grizzly Manufacturing of Paulding for 19 years, Braun Industries of Oakwood and Continental Can in Van Wert, and was a volunteer for Community Health Professionals of Paulding.

Also surviving are two daughters, Karen (Jerry) Bortel and Patti (Jim) Bissell, both of Paulding; a son, Kevin (Lorie) Phlipot of Paulding; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Jo Bissell in 1992; two sisters, Mary Frasier and Julia Akom; and two brothers, Fred and Raymond Wickstandt.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 20 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, with the Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date. Den Herder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 19 from 2-8 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church.

RALPH STOLLER 1929-2011

PAULDING – Ralph E. Stoller, age 82, passed away Tuesday, June 14 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, with his loving family by his side.

He was born March 3, 1929 in Paulding County, the son of Arthur B. and Alice L. (Ginzel) Stoller. On Oct. 23, 2005, he married Esther (Kipfer) Stoller, who survives. He was a member of Latty Apostolic Christian Church, a lifelong resident of Paulding County and a dedicated self-employed farmer.

He is also survived by six sons, Barry (Kay) Stoller of Antwerp, Rick (Linda) Stoller of Perrysburg, Greg (Jan) Stoller of Oakwood, Brad (Gwen) Stoller of Defiance and Eric (Beth) Stoller and Brian (Patty) Stoller, both of Paulding; two daughters, Kathy (Arthur) Warr of Fort Wayne and Lisa (Jeff) Stykemain, Defiance; a brother, Russell (Melvene) Stoller, Paulding; a stepdaughter, Sally Stoller, Paulding; three sisters, Marjorie Fischer of Roanoke, Ill., Patricia (Earl) Gerber of Decatur, Ind., and Gloria (Kent) Miller, The Villages, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife, Ruth C. (Elston) Stoller in 1995 and wife Bertha “Tootie” (Kaufman Sinn) Stoller in 2002; and a sister, Barbara Keysor.

ANNA BUSSING 1935-2011

PAULDING – Anna Faye Bussing, age 76, died Saturday morning, June 11, at her residence.

She was born March 28, 1935 in Wichita Falls, Texas, the daughter of Duncan N. and Nancy A. (Moore) Littlejohn. On Jan. 21, 1954, she married George L. Bussing, who preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 2010. She was a receiving clerk for the former Dietrich Industries of Hicksville, retiring in 2004 after 25 years of service. She attended the Rose Hill Church of God of Paulding. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, crocheting and flower gardening.

Surviving are four sons, Steven (Beverly), Tim (Melody) and James (Amy), all of Paulding, and Chris (Dawn) of Rainbow City, Ala.; two daughters, Carol (Leon) Goyings and Joni Bussing, both of Paulding; a daughter-law, Mary Bussing of Paulding; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Randy, in 2009; three brothers, Mix, Euwing and Lee Littlejohn; and two sisters, Effie Martin and Louise Littlejohn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.

NELLIE HARTMAN 1946-2011

VAN WERT – Nellie Mae Hartman, 64, of Van Wert, went to be with the Lord at 11:02 p.m. Thursday, June 9. She passed away at the Dekalb County Hospital in Auburn, Ind.

She was born June 20, 1946, the daughter of Elmer Marshall and Thelma (Rodman) Baker. She attended Wayne Trace High School, was a homemaker, and loved her family, crafting, quilting and sewing.

Nellie is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Jerry L. Hartman; three daughters, Beverly J. (Kevin) Caldwell, Kelly R. (Stephen) Mengerink and April R. (Scott) Dicke; eight grandchildren, Joshua and Jerad Caldwell, Haley, Zachary, Gavin and Olivia Dicke, and Hannah and Abby Mengerink; one great-granddaughter, Kara Caldwell; two brothers, Elmer (Cheryl) Baker Jr. of Payne and Glenn (Joyce) Baker of Haviland; and five sisters, Erma Pratt, Rose Maples, Carolyn (Jerry) Goins and Toni (George) Searfoss, all of Haviland, and Joann (Roger) Barker of Defiance.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Baker.

RUTH SMITH 1919-2011

ANTWERP – Ruth J. Smith, 91, of Antwerp, died Wednesday, June 8 at the Dallas Lamb Foundation Home in Payne.

She was born July 4, 1919 in Paulding County, the daughter of Charles and Myrtle (Stultz) Smith. She got her registered nurse degree in 1940 and she retired in 1984 from Dana Weatherhead as an occupational health nurse. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cecil, First Families of Paulding County and Paulding County Genealogy Society.

She is survived by a sister, Grace Light, and a brother, Richard Smith, both of Antwerp, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivan and Paul.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 13 at Dooley Funeral Home in Antwerp with the Rev. David Meriwether officiating. She will be buried at Rochester Cemetery.

Hours of visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 12 at the funeral home.

ALLAN RIDGWAY 1954-2011

ANTWERP – Allan J. Ridgway, 56, of Antwerp, passed away Sunday, June 5 at his residence.

He was born Aug. 27, 1954 in Bryan, the son of Jay and Audry (Wetmore) Ridgway. On March 9, 2000, he married Lisa Pier, who survives. He worked at Powertrain Components, Bryan, for eight years and Joe Schwartz Construction in Grabill for 20 years. He was a member of Antwerp Community Church, where he played the drums for the church praise and worship band.

Also surviving are his mother, of Hicksville; children, Tina (Judd) Price and Chris (Mandy) both of Hicksville, Nathan Pierce of Fort Wayne, Kris Markley of Van Wert and Lindsay Gutt of Antwerp; siblings Teresa (Lloyd) Beard of Butler, Ind., and Tom and Larry (Rose), both of Hicksville; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan; and his father, Jay.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8 at Antwerp Community Church, Antwerp. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Hicksville. Dooley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PRISCILLA McMAHEN 1961-2011

VAN WERT – Priscilla Sue McMahen, 49, of Van Wert, died in the morning on Monday, June 6, at her residence in Van Wert.

She was born June 20, 1961, in Paulding, the daughter of the late Jack Lavender and Martha May Flory, who survives. On Nov. 6, 1980, she married George McMahen, who survives in Van Wert. She attended Apostolic Christian Church of Junction.

Also surviving are a son, Terry Flory of Van Wert; two uncles in Lima and one uncle in California; and a sister in Georgia.

She was preceded in death by a sister.

Viewing and graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9 at Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding. Ministers of the Apostolic Christian Church of Junction will officiate. Brickner Funeral Home, Van Wert, is in charge of arrangements.

ROGER SCHLEGEL 1927-2011

ANTWERP – Roger Lee Schlegel, 84, of Antwerp, passed away Monday, June 6 at Paulding County Hospital.

He was born March 25, 1927 in Sherwood, the son of William and Mable (Kissabeth) Schlegel. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII and was a member of the Antwerp VFW and American Legion Post and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church of Antwerp. On Nov. 8, 1950, he married Dorothy Hetrick, who survives. He worked for 23-1/2 years for the N.Y. & Central Railroad and 23-1/2 years for General Electric.

Also surviving are his children, Debra Bechtol, Lyle and Jerl, all of Antwerp; a brother, Alva of Swanton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church of Antwerp.

RUTH DERCK 1936-2011

ANTWERP – Ruth Bell Derck, 74, of Antwerp, passed away Friday, June 3 at her residence.

She was born July 26, 1936 in Antwerp, the daughter of Galen C. and Francis B. Derck. She worked for several years on the telephone switchboard in Antwerp before dial telephones. She also worked for several years as a photo finisher for Ehrhart Studios and later as a receptionist at Dana Weatherhead. She enjoyed painting, reading and knitting. It was a delight to visit with her family and friends, especially her nieces and nephews. Despite being stricken with polio as a child, she maintained a cheerful attitude and spent most of her life caring for her family after their mother’s death.

Surviving are her sisters, Ann (Chuck) Wiedman, Jean (Paul) Reinhart, Mary (Kenny) Donat, Linda (Brooks) Pendergrast and Cindy (Mike) Knight, all of Antwerp; a brother, John, of Columbus; 27 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Robert and George; a half-brother, Tom Cottrell; and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with viewing one hour prior to her service. Burial will be in Maumee Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 6 and also one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

EDWARD FRY SR. 1920-2011

CONTINENTAL – Edward A. Fry Sr., 90, of Continental, passed from this life into the hands of God at 2:53 a.m. Thursday, June 2 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice.

He was born Sept. 14, 1920 in Osnaburg Township, Stark County, Ohio, the son of James and Mary (Snyder) Fry. On Aug. 22, 1941 he married Arabell “Judy” Edds, who survives. He was a 1938 graduate of Canton McKinley High School, led the singing Fry Family for 16 years and worked for 36 years at Western and Southern Life Insurance Company in Lima. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a longtime member of Melrose Methodist Church, where he was a lay leader and worship leader, and presently worshiped at Free Christian Church, Continental, where his son, Jim, is pastor. Ed had a passion for witnessing to others about Christ, and lifting their spirits during hard times. His humor and faith will be remembered and always be a comfort to those who knew him.

Also surviving are a daughter, the Rev. Carol (Jerry) Retcher of Defiance; two sons, the Rev. Robert (Terry) Fry of Toledo and the Rev. James (Lisa) Fry of Continental; a daughter-in-law, Jayne (John) Mussery of Lake Gage, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Nelson (Opal) Fry of Delphos.

He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Laura Fry, Mary Miller and Esther Rocovitz; brothers, Clarence, Benny, Jimmy, Harold and Floyd Fry; and a son, Eddie Fry Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at the Free Christian Church of God, Continental, with the Revs. Lewis Kujawski, Mike Baxter and Donald Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental, with military rites by the Continental American Legion. Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, is in charge of arrangements.

WANDA HUNT 1931-2011

ANTWERP – Wanda Hunt, 79, of Antwerp, passed away Tuesday, May 31, at Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.

She was born Aug. 12, 1931 in Antwerp, the daughter of Harry and Bessie (Starry) Drexler. On Aug. 11, 1950 she married George Hunt, who preceded her in death on June 20, 2004. She worked at General Electric in Fort Wayne for 41 years and was a devout member of Antwerp United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a granddaughter, April Fruit, and great-grandchildren Chris Henry and Gage Speaks, all of Antwerp.

She also was preceded in death by a son, David; and a sister, rances Slattery.

TOM COY 1943-2011

PAULDING – Thomas “Tom” Russell Coy lost his battle with colon cancer and peacefully went to his heavenly home on Saturday, May 28.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1943 in Paulding, the son of Daniel R. and Helen M. (Smalley) Coy. He graduated from Paulding High School in 1961 and worked 39 years for Haviland Drainage products, 38 of those years as manager of Haviland Culvert Company, and 15 of those years in sales for Haviland Drainage Products. He was secretary-treasurer for over 30 years for the Board of Trustees of Drainage products Inc. and Haviland Culvert Company. He retired Jan. 1, 2010.

On Aug. 24, 1969, he married Diana L. Mansfield, who survives. In May 1980, Tom accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, the most important decision of his life. He attended Calvary Bible Church in Paulding for over 30 years.

Tom was an avid golfer, and he loved to watch golf on TV when he could no longer play the game. He was a member of the Auglaize Golf Club and of the Pleasant Valley Golf Course. He also loved Ohio State athletics, especially Buckeye football.

A funeral service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at Calvary Bible Church, Paulding, with the Rev. Tiberius Rata and church elder John Mohr officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Paulding.

BETTY ESHEM

DEFIANCE – Betty G. Eshem, of Defiance, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2011, at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

She was born on Sept. 4 in East Point, Ky., the daughter of the late Goldie Marie Adkins. On Dec. 31, 1954, she married Douglas Eshem, who survives. She had worked as a nurses aide and was a member of the VFW and AMVETS auxiliaries. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Also surviving are four daughters, Judy (Michael) Sholl of Ney and Marilyn Clay, Janet Showman and Barbara (Randy) Clady, all of Defiance, a son, Douglas Eshem of Defiance; a brother, Randall (Wilma) Wells of Portsmouth; and many grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Huston.

Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, May 31 at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance, with Pastor Bobby Branham officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held two hours prior to services.

JOHN SHAFER 1940-2011

PAULDING – John P. Shafer, age 70, died Saturday, May 28 at his residence.

He was born July 26, 1940 in Paulding County, the son of Albert and Ruth (DeLaney) Shafer. On Oct. 14, 1961, he married Betty Jean Harp, who survives. He was the former owner of the Shafer Insurance Agency of Payne for 30 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Dupont Church of the Brethren in Dupont and was the owner and operator of J&B Foods of Paulding since 1976.

Also surviving are two sons, Terry (Paula) Shafer and Tim (Dianna) Shafer, both of Paulding; six grandchildren, Brianne, Natasha, Kellynn, Zakary, Laurenn and Michaela; and three great-grandchildren, Landon, Autymn and Kailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Shafer, in 2009; and his stepmother, Ocie Roughton Shafer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1 at Den Herder Funeral Home Paulding with the Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery, Brown Township.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 31 at the funeral home and one hour before services on Wednesday morning.

NORMAN ROUGHTON 1955-2011

OAKWOOD – Norman E. Roughton, 56, of Oakwood, died Wednesday, May 25, at the Defiance Regional Medical Center in Defiance.

He was born Jan. 19, 1955, in Paulding, the son of Rex Raymond and Constance L. Sheely Roughton. On Aug. 19. 1979, he married Peggy Ordway, who survives in Oakwood.

He was employed by General Motors and retired in 2006. He was a member of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Defiance. He enjoyed NASCAR, fishing, boating, spending time with his family and living in Tennessee.

He is also survived by his mother, Connie (Sheely) Roughton Dobbelaere and his stepfather, Robert Dobbelaere of Camden, Mich.; two daughters, Janalee (Matthew) Hiltner of North Creek and Hillary (Jason) Daniels of Paulding; six grandchildren, Lane, Colton and Denali Hiltner and Ryan, Evan and Issac Daniels; two brothers, Dan (Jenny) Roughton of Cincinnati and Doug (Wendy) Roughton of Ft. Thomas, Ky.; and a sister, Karen (Bryan) Rider of Rome City, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Defiance with the Rev. Michael Donnally officiating. Burial will be in Middle Creek Cemetery in Grover Hill.

PATRICIA NICELLEY 1922-2011

PAULDING – Patricia Ann Nicelley, age 88, died Wednesday, May 25 at Paulding County Hospital.

She was born June 4, 1922 in Chattanooga, Tenn., the daughter of Winford and Evelyn (Berry) Doughty. She married Ralph L. Nicelley, who preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1966. She previously served as Paulding County Clerk of Courts. She was a member of First Christian Church in Paulding, Paulding Garden Club and was a Master Gardener of the State of Ohio. She was a former correspondent for Fort Wayne Newspapers, and a former member of the Paulding Village Council.

She is survived by three sons, Roger (Jennifer) Nicelley, and Curtis (Lisa) Nicelley, both of Cecil, and Thomas (Shawna) Nicelley of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Maurice Doughty of Georgia and Walter Doughty of California; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lee Ann Ricketts.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Greg Bibler officiating. Burial will be in Cooper Cemetery, Paulding.

LLOYD STOLLER 1923-2011

PAULDING – Lloyd Donald Stoller, age 87, died Sunday, May 22 at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, Westerville.

He was born Nov. 27, 1923 in Paulding County, the son of Samuel C. and Mary H. (Metzger) Stoller. On Oct. 9, 1948, he married Catherine I. Tope, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, serving in the 96th Bomb Group, 338th Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force. He was a B-17 flight engineer/top turret gunner. He was a prisoner of war in Germany for one year.

He was employed by Paulding–Putnam Electric as a line superintendent and was a former Paulding County Sheriff Reserve and a Paulding volunteer fireman. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Paulding, and a life member of VFW Post #587.

Also surviving are a son, Terry (Karen) Vance of Creston; a daughter, Bev (Jerry) Miller, Lewis Center; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother and twin sisters; a stepbrother, Richard Stoller; and two stepsisters, Dean Clark and Donna Temple.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Greg Bibler officiating. Burial will be in Blue Creek Cemetery, Haviland, with military graveside rites accorded by VFW Post #587.

RON LANDRIE 1947-2011

VAN WERT — Ron R. Landrie, 63, of Van Wert died at 4:35 a.m., Thursday, May 19, at the Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert.

He was born Sept. 13, 1947, in Paulding, the son of Russel Earl and Betty Lorene (Sitcler) Landrie, who both preceded him in death.

He was a 1965 graduate of Paulding High School and had been employed as a banker at City Loan Financial in Van Wert and Paulding for over 20 years. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1197 and a member of the First Church of God in Van Wert. He was also a regular attendee of the Van Wert Sportsman Club.

Surviving are three daughters, Michelle (Brian) Landreville of Phoenix, Suzanne (Robert) Bland of Hoschton, Ga. and a younger daughter; his companion, Mary Miller of Van Wert; a brother, Michael Landrie of Napoleon; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Cowan and Son Funeral Home in Van Wert with Pastor Jacob Watts officiating. Burial will be in the Live Oak Cemetery in Paulding.

GORDON “HEAVY” FOUST 1957-2011

PAULDING – Gordon Gene “Heavy” Foust, age 53, died Wednesday, May 18 at Paulding County Hospital.

He was born July 23, 1957 in Paulding, the son of Elmer H. and Ruth Ellen (Kimmey) Foust. He was previously employed by Dana Weatherhead, Antwerp. He was owner/operator of Masquerade Karaoke in Paulding and Florida, and was lead singer and drummer of the band “Reno” for 25 years.

He is survived by a son, Gary Foust, Paulding, a daughter, Christy Foust, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Kathleen (Tom) Reinhart and Lori (Keith) Deming, both of Paulding; and two brothers, Mark Foust of Huron, Tenn. and Roland Foust, North Vernon, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

EUGENE WITTE 1924-2011

FORT WAYNE – Eugene L. Witte, 87, of Fort Wayne, died May 15 at the Country Inn Enhanced Living Center in Paulding.

He was born May 8, 1924, in Fort Wayne. He was married to Marjorie J. Witte, who preceded him in death. He was a member of the Trinity English Lutheran Church. He served 13 years on the board of directors of the Embassy Theater. He also was a volunteer at the Embassy Theater for 20 years.

He is survived by two sons, Steven L. of Naples, Fla. and Greg E. (Sandy) Witte of Woodburn; twin grandsons, Chris (Rachel) Witte and Craig (Heather) Witte and a great-granddaughter.

A private family service will be held. Entombment will be at Concordia Cemetery Gardens.

 

 

HOPE WALDRON 1920-2011

VAN WERT – Hope Adeline Waldron, 91, of Van Wert, died at 4:24 p.m. Friday, May 13 at the Inpatient Hospice Center, Van Wert.

She was born Jan. 30, 1920, near Grover Hill, the daughter of Willard Wilson and Elmyra (Parks) Wilson Tow. On Aug. 15, 1936, she married Alvin Edward Waldron, who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 2003. She farmed in Paulding County with her husband for 45 years. She also worked at Van Wert Manufacturing. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Van Wert, where she was active as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School staff, and various Bible studies. She also greatly loved God’s music. She was a member of Ohio Farmers Union and Ohio Farm Bureau and was active at the Council on Aging.

Surviving are a son, Alvin W. (Marilyn) Waldron of Convoy; one daughter, Corinne (Bruce) Fisher of Fort Wayne; a brother, Michael (Marie) Tow of Haviland; two sisters, Mary (Bud) Agnes of Spencerville and Rae Kay (Howard) Eager of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Robert Dennis Waldron; a granddaughter, Heather Fisher; a great-granddaughter, Emily Waldron; one brother, Willis Wilson; and two sisters, Wilma Miller and Isabel Lichtenstein.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 at First Baptist Church, Van Wert, with the Rev. Steve A. Robinson officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Convoy.

CLOVERDALE – Troy D. Lambert, age 44, of Cloverdale, died Saturday, May 14 at Glandorf Ambulatory Care Center.

He was born Aug. 15, 1966 in Chicago, the son of Kenneth and Patsy Jean (Malone) Lambert. On Sept. 27., 1986, he married Carla Carter, who survives. He was a welder and worked at Steel Technologies in Ottawa and previously at New Millennium in Continental. He was a member of Eagles Aerie 372 in Defiance.

Also surviving are two daughters, Tracie (Brody) White of Paulding and Krista Lambert, Cloverdale; a son, Matthew, of Cloverdale; a granddaughter, Alayna White; a sister, Dianne (Danny) Orr of Defiance; two brothers, Timothy Johnson of Ayersville and Trevor (Becky) Lambert of Defiance; and his father, of Defiance.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

EDWARD “CHUCK” BRADFORD 1924-2011

OAKWOOD – Edward “Chuck” Bradford, 87, of Oakwood, passed away at 5:24 a.m. Wednesday, May 11 at Paulding County Hospital.

He was born Feb. 13, 1924 in Oakwood, the son of Edward and Stella (Williams) Bradford. On Oct. 13, 1945, he married Violet A. Tipsword, who preceded him in death Aug. 31, 2004. He worked for Cooper Furniture, was a farmer and carpenter, and was manager of Countrymark Grain Elevator for 20 years before retiring.

He is survived by a daughter, Vicki (Richard) Schweizer of Grand Junction, Colo.; a son, James (Hope) Bradford of Payne; four grandsons, Brad Wilson, Jeff Wilson, Nathan Bradford and Shawn Bradford; and seven great-grandchildren, Dereck Wilson, Adeline Bradford, Trenton Wilson, Braden Wilson, Julia Glasner, Maddox Bradford and EllaMarie Bradford.

Also preceding him in death were six brothers, Cecil, Bert, Jerry, Earl, Ralph and Bernard Bradford; and three sisters, Creda Soule, Blanch Carnahan and Lois Freede.

Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, May 16 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood with the Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Little Auglaize Cemetery, Melrose.

IRENE SHULTZ-HAYS 1936-2010

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. – Irene Shultz-Hays, 74, of Scottsburg, Ind., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at the Scott Villa Living Center.

She was born June 13, 1936 in Fort Wayne, the daughter of Eugene Irving and Evelyn Florence (Linebrink) Tunks. She was a retired cook for the old Best Western in Scottsburg, a former manager of the Lake Weir Laundromat in Ocklawaha, Fla. and the Sears Town Laundromat in Ocala, Fla. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #6582.

Surviving are two sons, Leroy W. “Bill” (Sandy) Shultz of Louisville and Michael Shultz of Scottsburg, Ind.; two daughters, Tina Payne and Alice Bryant, both of Scottsburg; a sister, Carolyn Roughton of Oakwood; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leroy William Shultz Sr., in 1987; and her second husband, John Hays, on March 4, 2009.

RONALD FENTER 1947-2011

OAKWOOD – Ronald C. Fenter, 63, of Oakwood, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday, May 9 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born July 17, 1947 in Defiance, the son of Harold and Anna Marie (Crampton) Fenter. On Jan. 29, 1971, he married Nancy Bish, who survives in Oakwood. He was retired.

Also surviving are two children, Dennis Lee Oglesbee of Findlay and Kathy Jean Cooper of Church Hill, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five brothers; and four sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Terry and Marvin Fenter.

PAULDING – Dianne Elizabeth (Heller) Stouffer, age 67, died Tuesday, May 10 at Paulding County Hospital.

She was born Jan. 25, 1944 in Defiance County, the daughter of George E. and Helen (Rieke) Heller. On Nov. 19, 1966 she married R. David Stouffer, who survives. She was employed as an LPN by Paulding County Hospital, retiring in 2005, and Paulding County Home Health Care. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Paulding, where she was also a Sunday School teacher and served on the church council. She was a life member of John Paulding Historical Society and a member of the Flat Rock Creek Gas, Steam Tractor Association.

Also surviving are her mother, Helen Heller Andrews, Oakwood; a son, Neal (Kelly) Stouffer, Payne; a daughter, Jill (David) Engle, Bowling Green, two brothers, Ron (Jennie) Heller and Don (Cheryl) Heller, both of Defiance; and six grandchildren, Jordan and Morgan Engle, Matthew, Jacob, Luke and Emma Stouffer.

She was preceded in death by her father, and her stepfather, Walter Andrews.

OAKWOOD – Alvin L. Long, 87, of Oakwood, died 12:48 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born Feb. 16, 1924 in Perrysburg, the son of Henry and Julia (Morlock) Long. On March 15, 1946, he married Fanny May Adams, who survives in Oakwood. He retired from Grizzly Corp., Paulding. He was a member of Twin Oaks United Methodist Church, Oakwood, and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Also surviving are two sons, Steve (Beth) Long of Defiance and Rick Long of Grover Hill; a daughter, Connie Singer of Defiance; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, a brother and three sisters.

ANTWERP – Frances Slattery, age 86, of Antwerp, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011 at her residence.

She was born May 22, 1924, in Antwerp, the daughter of Harry and Bessie (Starry) Drexler. On Dec. 26, 1943, she married Leroy Slattery, who preceded her in death Feb. 10, 2011. They farmed and operated their own sawmill together. Frances also operated her own catering service.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald (Cindi) of Antwerp and Lynn (Carol) of Oriedo, Fla.; a sister, Wanda Hunt of Antwerp; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was born July 30, 1947 in Wauseon, the daughter of the late Jose and Andrea (Martinez) Mendez. She was a member of South Scipio United Brethren Church.
