DONALD KREISCHER
1930-2008
VAN WERT — Donald Eugene Kreischer, 77, of Scott, died at 7:29 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Van Wert County Hospital.
He was born Nov. 13, 1930, in Van Wert, the son of Jacob and Leona (Foor) Kreischer, who both preceded him in death. On Oct. 30, 1951, he married Mary L. (Downing) Kreischer, who survives in Scott.
He was a 1948 graduate of Van Wert High School and a member of the Calvary Evangelical Church and Friendship Sunday School Class. He retired from the Chrysler Corporation in Van Wert in 1989, following 26 years of service.
Also surviving are two sons, Donald E. (Lisa) Kreischer Jr. of Paulding and Jason C. Kreischer of Scott; six grandchildren, Bryce (Amanda) Kreischer, Tracie Kreischer, Caleb (Tifanie) Kreischer, Joshua Kreischer, Kimberly Kreischer, and Rachael Kreischer; and a great-grandson, Jaxon Kreischer.
Also preceding him in death was a brother, Robert L. Kreischer.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 9, at Cowan and Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastor W. Clark Williman officiating. Burial will be in the Scott Cemetery, Scott.

ANTWERP — Leona “Tannie” Rothgeb, 63, of Antwerp, died at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born Nov. 5, 1944 in Hicksville, the daughter of Vernon W. and Julia E. (Sigler) Morris, who both preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Antwerp Church of Christ, a lifetime member of Antwerp VFW Post 5087 Auxiliary. She loved bluegrass music and playing cards on Friday night at Ida Stiner’s. 
She will be sadly missed by a daughter Tannie “Ree” (Justin) Tate of Spring City, Tenn.; a son, James (Karrie) Rothgeb of Akron; one sister, Nancy Howard of Hicksville; and a brother, Glenn “Butch” Morris.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Sharon McClish.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Antwerp Church of Christ with Sam Stiner officiating. Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, was in charge of the arrangements.

HICKSVILLE – Wayne Richard Sowers, 53, died at 5:49 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hicksville.
He was born on Sept. 7, 1954 in Defiance, the son of Richard and Donna (Kittridge) Sowers. On Oct. 24, 1997 he married Laura Crabill, who survives. A 1971 graduate of Fairview High School, he was a truck driver for 5C’s Farm of Hicksville, and enjoyed fishing.
Also surviving are three daughters, Tina Holman of Paulding, Sara (Paul) Prescott of Hicksville and Nina Sowers of Butler, Ind.; three stepchildren, Tina Leverton of Hicksville and Michael and Melissa Leverton of Garrett, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Paul (Linda) of Defiance and Ed (Claudia) of Hicksville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Richie and Ryan; and a wife, Kay Sowers.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 6 at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville, with Larry Weller officiating. Burial was in Farmer Cemetery, Farmer.

1915-2008
PAYNE – Helen L. Whitman, age 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008 at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert.
She was born Dec. 15, 1915 in Payne, the daughter of Harl and Estella (Myers) Sitcler. On Oct. 24, 1936 she married Lawrence F. Whitman, who preceded her in death on April 9, 1981. She was a member of Payne Church of the Nazarene, Club 36 Farm Ladies, and a former Sunday school teacher at the Payne Church of God.
She is survived by three sons, Larry (Shaaron) Whitman, Gerald “Pete” Whitman, and Richard (Eileen) Whitman, all of Payne; three daughters, Mary Harting of Fort Wayne, Judy Rosselet of New Berlin, Wis., and Kay (Richard) Williams, Plano, Texas; four sisters, Christine (Victor) Timbrook of Hicksville, Shirley (Robert) Barbeau of Dayton, Jean Gibson of Fort Wayne, and Sharyn (Gaylord) Willett, Oak Harbor; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Whitman; and sisters Maxine Steibling, Madeline Gideon, Betty Landrie, and infant Nancy Sitcler.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Payne Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Mike Harper officiating. Burial was in Lehman Cemetery. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, was in charge of arrangements.

CECIL – Nancy A. Johnston, 65, of Cecil, passed away at 4:50 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Park View Nursing Center, Edgerton, Ohio.
Nancy was born on April 15, 1942 in Defiance County, the daughter of Hugh and Iva (Crawford) Keegan. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards, garage sales and flowers. On April 17, 1960, she married Max Johnston, who preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 2005.
She will be sadly missed by her mother, Iva Keegan of Montgomery, Mich.; two daughters, Debbie (Denny) Wells of Mark Center and Julie Johnston of Cecil; two sons, Max Jr. of Cecil and Mark of Fort Wayne; five sisters, Karen Armstrong of Pittsburgh, Mich., Sharon Hill of Brooksville, Fla., Judy Altheiser of Montgomery, Mich., Kathy Altheiser of Logan, W.Va., and Mary Keegan of Mark Center; six brothers, Kenneth of Cecil, and Hugh Jr., Thomas, William, Gordon and George, all of Montgomery, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her father, and a sister, Dina Sue Keegan.

ANTWERP – Mary B. Lichty, 87, of Antwerp, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10 at DeKalb Memorial Hospital, Auburn, Ind.
She was born on Feb. 24, 1920 in Cement City, Mich., the daughter of the late Andrew and Rose (Hoover) Traylor. She married Max Lichty, who preceded her in death. Mary was a valued employee at General Electric, Fort Wayne, for 19 years, a member of the Royal Neighbors and enjoyed knitting.
Mary will be sadly missed by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert (Mary) of Payne, Andy (Marilyn) of LaGrange, Ind. and Frank (Shirley) of Van Wert; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 14, at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with the Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. Burial was in Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp.

PAYNE – Mary M. Harshman, age 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.
She was born July 29, 1922 in Berne, Ind., the daughter of Fred and Lavina (Beer) Pickford. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Payne, and the St. Paul United Methodist Women’s Club. She was an honorary grandmother to countless children.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest Harshman, Payne; two daughters, Frances (James) Litzenberg, Merritt Island, Fla., and Sharon “Sis” (Gary) Burke, Payne; two brothers, Fred Jr. (Patsy) Pickford of Pensacola, Fla. and Donald (Shirley) Pickford, Decatur, Ind.; two grandchildren, Rachelle Litzenberg and Matthew Burke; and a great-grandson, Samuel Litzenberg.
She was preceded in death by a son, Eric Harvey; a brother, Stephen Pickford; a sister, Bernice Barte; and a great-grandson, David Litzenberg.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 14 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Payne. Burial was in MRE Cemetery, Berne. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, was in charge of arrangements.

MARY GROVES
1916-2008
FORT WAYNE — Mary Louise “Mame” Groves died Jan. 12, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born Dec. 27, 1916, in Washington Township, Paulding County, the daughter of George W. Goings and Lillian Underwood. She married Elmer Maurice Groves on June 19, 1940, who preceded her in death.
She attended Michigan State University, where she studied child development. She began working with foster children in 1969 and was involved in the Head Start program for 14 years.
In 1979, she was voted Woman of the Year by the Paulding County Business and Professional Women’s Association.
She was very active in the community and church. She was a member of the Latty Zion Missionary Baptist Church until moving to Fort Wayne in 1984. There, she became a Watch Care member of the Renaissance Baptist Church.
Mary loved children and enjoyed gardening, and baking her popular rolls, cakes, sugar cookies and holiday candies.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory two sons, George (Ruth) Groves of Van Wert, and Elmer Groves Jr. of Latty; four daughters, Barbara Jean (Joe) Franklin, Beverly Groves and Beatrice (Vernter) Tabron, all of Fort Wayne, and Carol (Michael) Scott of Fredericksburg, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.
Also preceding her in death was a son, Justus Groves.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to services, today, Jan. 16, at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Michael Lathan Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding.

1922-2008
PAULDING – Raymond I. Delgado, age 85, died Sunday, Jan. 13 at Brookview Healthcare Center, Defiance.
He was born May 22, 1922 in Waelder, Texas, the son of Pablo and Maria DeJesus (Ibarra) Delgado. In 1948, he married Mary A. Almaraz, who preceded him in death on April 3, 1992. He was a WWII Navy veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Raleigh. He retired from GM Powertrain in 1982. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paulding, United Auto Workers, VFW Post #587, and a member of the Corsillo Movement.
He is survived by five children, Rosa (James) Orthman of Fort Wayne, Mary (Charles) Bruce of Rome City, Ind., Gloria (Donald) Highwarden of Paulding, Ofelia Morr of Kendalville, Ind. and Sylvia (Mark) Delgado Stickroth, Oro Valley Ariz.; two brothers, John (Mollie) Delgado of Holland, Mich., and Abdon Joe (Chena) Delgado, Waelder, Texas; four sisters, Dora (Pedro) Gonzales of Defiance, Delfina Nunez of Austin, Texas, Angie (Joe) Leija of Denver City, Texas, and Aurora (Jim) Saldana, San Marcos, Texas; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by brothers Marcos, Ascension and Filipe; sisters Paula Rodriguez and Ninia Delgado; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding, with the Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial will be in Paulding Memorial Cemetery with military graveside rites by VFW Post #587.
Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

ANTWERP – Maxine Cornely, 87, formerly of Akron, died Thursday, Jan. 17 in Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
She was born Sept. 11, 1920. She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and friend to many. She will be dearly missed.
Surviving are two children, Ralph of Decatur, Ind. and Laura (John) Rindahl of Antwerp; two sisters, Barbara Grandon of Warren, and Mary Menhorn; two grandchildren, Melissa and John Rindahl; a great-grandchild, Chase; and many nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jack.
Burial will be along side her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp.

ANTWERP – Mark D. Altic, 49, of Antwerp, passed away at 11:31 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Paulding County Hospital.
Mark was born on July 12, 1958, in Fort Wayne, the son of the late William and Betty L. (Brown) Altic. He was employed at Sims in Payne. On Oct. 16, 1983 he married Deborah Williamson.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Deb; his sons, Kyle (Holli) and Bradley; his brothers, Stephen and Shawn of Fort Wayne, and Michael, Shane and Greg, all of Antwerp; sisters, Ruth Kaufman, Deborah Ricard, Vicki Vachon and Traci O’Donnell, all of Antwerp, and Tina Galbreath; and several nieces and nephews

HICKSVILLE — Anita A. Schilb, 102, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Hawthorn Court Nursing Home in Paulding.
She was born on Jan. 12, 1906 in Paulding County, the daughter of Emmet and Alberta (McConnell) Barnes. She graduated from Paulding High School and attended Defiance College. In 1925, she married J. Ray “Bud” Schilb, who preceded her in death in 1971.
She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper for their family owned businesses in Hicksville, Schilb Funeral Home and Ray’s Furniture Store. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hicksville, an 80-year member of the Eastern Star, Paulding, several card clubs, and she enjoyed baking cookies.
She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Burl Barnes Sr., Lyle Barnes and Herbert Barnes; and three sisters, Lietha Thompson, Vernice Jackson Kincade and Gail McMichael.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 23, at Smith and Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville, with the Rev. Tom Graves officiating, and visitation one hour prior to services.
Burial will be at Maumee Cemetery in Antwerp.

CECIL – Rosalie E. Koenn, age 83, died Thursday, Jan. 17 at Harborside Healthcare, Bryan.
She was born Oct. 19, 1924 in Huntington, Ind., the daughter of Jess and Grace (Johnson) Tobias. On April 23, 1949 she married Virgil Koenn, who preceded her in death on July 4, 1987. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding County Hospital Benevolent Society, and was a volunteer at the Bargain Bin, Paulding. She was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Cecil and the Altar Rosary Society.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (John) Wappes, Antwerp; a son, Phillip Koenn, Cecil; grandchildren, John and Alyssa Wappes of Pineville, N.C., Jean Wappes of Charlotte, N.C., Scott and Tiffany Pease of Paulding, Kellen and Tricia Koenn of Sunbury, Andy and Andrea Manor of Fort Wayne, and Ashley Koenn, Bryan; a great-grandson, Trevor Manor, Fort Wayne; and two sisters, Wanda Wannemacher, Payne, and Doris Heckelmann, Antwerp.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Ted; a daughter, Beverly; an infant brother; and her stepfather, Perry Jackson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding, with the Rev. G. Allan Fillman officiating. Burial was in the Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery, Cecil. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, was in charge of arrangements.

DICK CARR
1921-2008
ANTWERP – Charles Richard “Dick” Carr, 86, of Antwerp, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at his residence.
He was born July 16, 1921 in Antwerp, the son of the late Thomas and Phoebe  (Smith) Carr. He served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lt. in WWII. On April 14, 1943, he married Marie Slusher, who survives. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Antwerp, where he had been the clerk and treasurer.
Dick spent summers traveling to learn more about computers, consequently introducing computers at Indiana Institute of Technology, where he was the chairman of the Math & Computer Science Department. While there he received the honorary title “Faculty Emeritus of Indiana Institute of Technology” as a tribute to his 35 years of dedicated service.  He was a kind,  reserved and dignified gentleman, who enjoyed gardening, designing and carpentry.
Dick will be sadly missed by his wife, Marie; daughter, Christal Gibson of Antwerp; son, Richard Gregory (Barbara) Carr of Warren, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Jason Gibson of Antwerp and Amanda and Cory Gibson of Orlando, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a sister,  Maxine Farst; and a brother, Lyle.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 19 at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with the Rev. Ralph Klinker  officiating. Burial was in Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp.

ELIDA — Emaline R. John, 89, died at 4:45 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Van Crest Health Care Center in Van Wert.
She was born Oct. 14, 1918, in Allen County, the daughter of George W. and Wilhelmina B. “Minnie” (Huck) Haller. On June 24, 1937, she married Francis “Ray” John, who preceded her in death Jan. 12, 2006. She was a homemaker, and loved to travel with her husband. She enjoyed taking pictures and scrapbooking.
She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Delphos Chapter of Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years, a charter member of the Lima Motorcycle Club, and a member of the International Airstream Club of Auglaize Valley Unit.
She is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann (Roy) Noggle of Haviland; six grandchildren, Douglas (Star) Zizelman of Celina, Vicki (Steve) Salmons of Wapak, Connie Myers and Steve Zizleman of Elida, David (Amy) Noggle of Payne, and Cindy (Ken) Trammell of Convoy; 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were a son, Gary E. John; a daughter, Carol R. John; three brothers, Harold, Clayton and Merle Haller; and one sister, Nettina Haller.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 23 at Harter and Schier Funeral Home in Delphos, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.

MANDALE — Kenneth Ivan Simindinger, 82, of Mandale, died at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Convoy Care Center in Convoy.
He was born May 8. 1925, in Mandale, the son of George and Goldie (Leiber) Simindinger. He married Betty Talbott, who preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 1987. He married Martha Verdene (Pease) Lehman, who also preceded him in death on July 3, 2006.
He retired as an inspector from International Harvester of Fort Wayne.
He is survived by six sons, Virgil (Teresa) and Marcus (Lisa) Simindinger of Van Wert, Kenneth George (Elizabeth) Simindinger of Ottoville, Terry of Grover Hill, and Jerry and Timothy of Cloverdale; a sister, Donna Mae Simindinger of Van Wert; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were a son, Charles David Simindinger; a granddaughter, Heather Renee Simindinger; and two brothers, Gayle Smith and Virgil George Simindinger, who was killed in WWII.
Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Cowan and Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Rev. Don Rogers of the Mandale Church of Christ in Christian Union officiating. Burial was in the Middle Creek Cemetery, near Grover Hill.

DEFIANCE — Monica Fillman, 84, of rural Defiance, died at 3:24 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Mercy Hospital in Defiance.
She was born May 10, 1923, in Paulding County, the daughter of John and Augusta Justinger. On June 24, 1950, she married Bill Fillman, who survives. She was employed at the Zeller Corporation for 19 years, and had worked at All Star Products for 10 years.
She was a member of the St. Isidore Catholic Church at the Bend, a member of the Altar Society, and the Defiance Eagles Auxiliary.
Also surviving are two sons, Rev. Allen Fillman of Paulding and Patrick (Martha) Fillman of Sherwood; two daughter-in-laws, Greta (Tom) Porter of Defiance and Helene Fillman of Thermopolis, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mike (Slim) and Bill Fillman; and two brothers, Ralph and Virgil Justinger.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 28, at the St. Isidore Catholic Church at the Bend, with Father Allan Fillman officiating. Interment was in the St. Stephan Church Cemetery at Delaware Bend. Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home in Defiance was in charge of the arrangements.

FORT WAYNE – Robert D. “Ard” Ladig, 78, passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at Renaissance Village in Fort Wayne.
Born in Fort Wayne, he was a sales engineer for Challenge Tool New Haven, retiring in 1994. He was a former pattern maker casting engineer. He worked for Harvester and Hitachi. He graduated from Elmhurst High School in 1948 and was a member of Abundant Life Tabernacle. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Cherie Ladig of Fort Wayne; daughters, Terri (Ted) Ballard of Fort Wayne, Denise (Brent) Christen, and Cindy (Brian) Everly, both of Columbia City, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence N. and Gusta M. Ladig; two sisters; and a brother.
Services were held Friday, Jan. 25 at Abundant Life Tabernacle, with the Rev. David Keller officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park. D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Antwerp native Eleanor Marie Perriello, “Susie” to all who knew her, died Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Rosewood Health Care Center, Bowling Green Ky., of cancer.
Born Aug. 12, 1927 in Hicksville to Gerald and Dorothy (Boyce) Fulmer, she moved to Chicago when she was 16. She married Anthony Perriello  in 1954 and gave birth to two sons there, later moving with him to Naugatuck, Conn., where she gave birth to their daughter.
They moved back to Antwerp in 1984. Not long afterwards, she began a 20-plus year career working for the Antwerp Public Schools, an association which brought her great happiness.
Susie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Antwerp, and was active in the Antwerp posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was also a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs.
She is survived by her brother, Sam (Marie) Fulmer of Coleman, Mich.; half-sister Carolyn (Geoff) Peverill of Malvern, England; two sons, Vincent (Christine) Perriello of Bowling Green, Ky. and Thomas (Linda) Perriello of Naugatuck, Conn.; a daughter, Susann (Richard) Platt of Naugatuck; grandchildren, Josephine Perriello, Christopher Perriello, Valerie Newcomb, Cassie Platt, Erin Perriello, Karl Platt and Rachael Perriello; three great-grandchildren, four nieces; and four nephews.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 27 at First Baptist Church of Antwerp, with the Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass., with  her beloved Anthony, who was laid to rest there after his death in 1989.

PAULDING – Edna B. Price, age 96, died Thursday, Jan. 24, at Convoy Care Center, Convoy.
She was born July 25, 1911 in Paulding County, the daughter of Charles and Christina (Swary) AuFrance. On July 12, 1929 she married Arthur C. “Bud” Price, who preceded her in death on March 21, 1989. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding, the Altar Rosary Society, the Prayer Chain, and the Paulding County Hospital Auxiliary. She was previously employed by the Paulding County Hospital for 22 years, the former Grizzly Manufacturing in Paulding, and Fruehauf Trucking in Fort Wayne, and had been a home health care provider.
She is survived by a son, Arthur “Bud” (Dorothy) Price Jr., Oakwood; a daughter, Ramona Jean (William) Winterhalter, Defiance; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Marty Winterhalter; a brother, Joe AuFrance; and four sisters, Elizabeth Parrish, Marie Devers, Catherine Price and Frances Bullock.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. David Tscherne officiating. Burial was in Live Oak Cemetery. Den Herder Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Teri A. Sowers, 48, of Van Wert, died at 1:34 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Paulding County.
She was born Feb. 7, 1959, in Van Wert, the daughter of Helen L. (Ward) Hoverman, who survives in Van Wert, and the late Charles Olen Hoverman. On June 24, 1989, she married Michael R. Sowers, who survives.
She was director of Van Wert County Crime Victims Services and had also worked as a paralegal for Legal Aid for nearly 20 years. She was very active in the Van Wert Civic Theatre, serving on several boards and as the sound technician and director. She was also involved in the United Way of Van Wert County.
Also surviving are two children, Natalie (Edward) Van Winkle of Charlotte, N.C., and Marc (fiancé Kristin Kalkreuth) Flickinger of Cincinnati; two brothers, Richard “Dick” (Pam) Hoverman and Michael Olen (Mary) Hoverman of Maumee; and two sisters, Mary Lou Johns of Charlotte, N.C., and Barbara J. (Tom) Furniss of Waterville.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 26, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Harr officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

SYRACUSE, Ind. — Richard Burton Thompson, 54, of Syracuse, died Monday, Feb. 4, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 29, 1953 in Paulding, the son of Carl and Dorothy (Sutton) Thompson. He had resided in Syracuse, Ind. since Aug. 2007, moving there from New York City. He was a controller with Van Guard Inc. in Manhattan from 1979 until 2004.
He is survived by two brothers, Robert and James Thompson, both of Syracuse; a nephew, and his best friend, Jim Lavin, also of Syracuse.
There will be no calling hours and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

VAN WERT, Ohio - Charlotte A. Rogers, 74, of Van Wert, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Gibsonburg, Ohio, the daughter of Leona (Crispen) Runion and Allen Runion, who both preceded her in death. She married Donald E. Rogers. He died June 21, 1999.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Kristy) Rogers of Van Wert; one brother, Donald “Jack” Runion of Gibsonburg, Ohio, and her grandchildren, Christopher, Amanda, Allison, Madeline and Mason Rogers.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Paul Runion, and two sisters, Evelyn Pratt and Mary Pratt.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Friends Church, Van Wert.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory in Van Wert, with the Rev. Neil Hammons officiating. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery, Scott, Ohio.

OAKWOOD – A. Bruce Moore, age 88, died Thursday, Jan. 31, at his home.
He was born Nov. 2, 1919 in Hicksville, the son of I.F. “Frosty” and Maude (Platter) Moore. He was a 1938 graduate of Hicksville High School and in 1944 he married M. Imogene (Tracy) Moore, who preceded him in death in 1996.
He was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, serving in Northern Ireland aboard the USS Waukesha, also serving at the Panama Canal, Hawaii, Guam, Saipan and Tokyo Harbor for the occupation of Japan. He was a 32-year employee of General Motors, Defiance, Ohio retiring in 1982. He also delivered ambulances for Braun Industries.
He was a former Boy Scout leader of Troop #19 in Oakwood. He was a life member and past post commander of VFW Post #3360 of Defiance. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Continental, and a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Defiance. He was a member of the American Legion Post #541 of Continental, and a member of the Twin Oaks United Methodist Church of Oakwood.
Surviving are a son, Robert (Peg) Moore of Oakdale, Pa.; a daughter, Patty (Bill) Vance of Paulding; a sister, Virginia Beltz of Hicksville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Powell; a grandson, Thomas Moore; and a sister, Leila Hannah.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding, with the Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding, with the Defiance VFW Post #3360 conducting military honors.

PAULDING – Donald W. Kagy, 85, of Paulding, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Country Inn, Paulding.
Donald was born on Jan. 27, 1923, in Bloomville, Ohio, the son of the late Clyde and Clady (Weaver) Kagy. On Oct. 30, 1948, he married Marie Roth, who survives. Donald graduated from Ohio State University and was the director of the Paulding County Soil & Water Conservation District from 1969-78.  Previous to that he was the plant manager  at Page Dairy, Bluffton, Ohio.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a sergeant stationed in England during WWII, was a member of the Paulding VFW Post 587 and the Soil Conservation Society of America, and enjoyed farming.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Marie; two daughters, Diane (Marshall) Olp of Yuma, Ariz. and Ann (Steve) Wamberg, Colorado Springs; two sons, Roger (Pat) of Houston and James (Jane) of Cincinnati; three sisters, Eunice (Junior) Nagle of Willard, Marlene (Boyd) Gurney of Richmond, Va. and Lois (Bill) Reichart of Columbus; three brothers, Joe (Katie) of Maumee, and Steve (Dottie) and Merle (RoseAnne), both of Tiffin; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by
sisters, Mildred and Joyce; and brothers, Gilbert, Berlin, Ken, Carlton and Forest.

OAKWOOD – Ann E. Sherry, 91, of Oakwood, passed away on Monday, Feb. 4.
She was born Jan. 23, 1917, the daughter of McElroy and Grace (Roberts) Swallem. On Jan. 8, 1942, she married Lester W. Sherry, who preceded her in death as a result of injuries sustained in a farming accident on June 21, 1997.
She received a two-year diploma from Bowling Green State University. In 1953, a bachelor of science degree was confirmed upon her by Ohio State University. And she received a master of science degree in education from St. Francis College, Fort Wayne. She taught school in Allen, Hardin, Marion, Paulding and Van Wert counties. She was a world traveler, having visited six great divisions of land on the globe. She was the author of the book, The Melrose Area. She was a member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church of Oakwood, a past matron and secretary of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a past president of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are two sons, Phillip of Oakwood and William of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance, with the Rev. William W. Sherry officiating. Interment will be at the Dayton National Cemetery, Dayton.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. today, Feb. 6 at Lawson-Roessner.

ANTWERP – Leota  Brandenburg, 92, of Antwerp, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Hicksville.
Leota was born on Oct. 12, 1915, in Knox, Ohio, the daughter of the late Hary and Edythee (Ewing) Miller. On Dec. 14, 1933 she married Vadis Brandenburg, who preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1970. She was a homemaker, a member of the Antwerp United Methodist Church and the Royal Neighbors of America.
She will be sadly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Clair and Carol of Antwerp; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her daughter and son-in-law, Daisy and Herman Stout; two sisters, Ellen Fillmore and Lucretia Noll; and three brothers, Lavon, Leon and Carey Miller.

PAULDING — Vera M. Gray, 86, died at 7:10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Hawthorn Court Nursing Home in Paulding.
She was born July 10, 1921, in Latty, the daughter of Henry S. and Hannah A. (Sloan) Hill. On Dec. 15, 1947, she married Raymond Gray, who preceded her in death on July 23, 2006. She was a homemaker and she retired from the housekeeping department at Paulding County Hospital in 1970.
She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Paulding, where she was very active in church functions. She assisted with Paulding County Cancer Society fundraising, was a member of VFW Post #587 Auxiliary, and worked for the Paulding County Election Board for 25 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Ruth Ann (Carl) Lemmerbrock of Harper, Texas; and a grandson, Christopher (Kristina) Waaland of Northport, Ala.
Also preceding her in death were a son, William J. Gray in 1997; six brothers, Floyd, Waveland, Ray, Vernon, Ed and Harold Hill; and three sisters, Gladys McCullough, Helen Hill and Florence Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 20, at the First Christian Church in Paulding, with the Rev. Gregory Bibler officiating. PAYNE — Albert C. Schrimshaw, 95, died at 8:55 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Oaks, in Columbia City, Ind.
He was born April 15, 1912, in Paulding County Ohio, the son of Charles and Minnie (Allan) Schrimshaw. On Jan. 1, 1939 he married Helen W. Huebner, who preceded him in death on Nov. 19, 2002. He was an engineer for Kunkle Valve of Fort Wayne. He was also a test driver for the former International Harvester Truck Manufacturers of Fort Wayne. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Briceton.
He is survived by three sons, Rex (Irene) Schrimshaw of Wesley Chapel Fla., Neal (Mary) Schrimshaw of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Keith (Linda) Schrimshaw of Auburn, Ind.; a daughter, Marla (John) White of Churubusco, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph A. Schrimshaw; and a sister, Grace LeFure.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. today, Feb. 20, the St. John Lutheran Church in Briceton, with Pastor Joe Allen officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding. PAYNE — Glenda A. Gonser, 96, died at 2:45 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Dallas Lamb Foundation Home, Payne.
She was born Aug. 7, 1911, in Paulding County, the daughter of Emil and Lucinda (Wald) Huguenin. On June 8, 1946, she married Charles G. Gonser, who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 2001. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Payne. She was employed as a nurse for St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne, hospitals in Chicago, home health care, and was also an x-ray technician for St. Joseph Hospital.
She is survived by two daughters, Gaye Potts, Payne, and Cindy Munoz, Hamilton, Ind.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Victor Huguenin.
Funeral services were held Feb. 15 at the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Payne, with the Rev. Amy Haines officiating. Burial was in Wiltsie Cemetery, Payne. Den Herder Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

PAYNE – Donald James Cadwallader, 85, of Payne, passed away at 4:40 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 17 at Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born on Oct. 21, 1922 in Paulding, the son of the late Everett  James  and Myrtle  Mabel (Munson) Cadwallader. On Nov. 4, 1943, he married Mildred Tracey, who survives. He was the  co-owner of C&Y Oil, Payne. Having served in the Air Force during WWII, he proudly attended the WWII Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Payne Church of Christ, where he was a deacon and elder; Payne Flatrock Masonic Lodge #580; the Payne American Legion; Payne Chamber of Commerce; Union State Bank Board and Payne School Board. Don enjoyed flying Champ and Sesna airplanes, golf and mowing grass.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Millie; a daughter, Cheryl Luther of Payne; three sons, Ted (Loretta) of Tonawanda, N.Y., Gary (Kathy) of Payne and Thomas (Kim) of Van Wert; a brother, Warren of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Geyer; and two brothers, Harold and Raymond.

PAULDING – Pauline L. Hale, age 74, died at 7:38 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 at the Harborside Healthcare Center, Defiance.
She was born on May 5, 1933 in Paulding County, the daughter of Arthur and Elsie (Hart) Harrow. On June 1, 1952 she married Joseph W. Hale, who survives. She was a homemaker.
Also surviving are three sons, Steven (Nancy) Hale of Sherwood, Kirk (Kelly) Hale of Northport, Ala. and James (Karen) Hale of Latty; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim (Diane) Harrow of Cecil; and three sisters, Joann (Max) Pease of Latty, Marjorie (Clayton) Howell of Paulding, and Viola (Morris) Dobbelaere of Oakwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert A. Hale in 1977; one brother, Richard Harrow; and one sister, Mary Louise Grindstaff.

DECATUR, Ind. — Marie L. Steffen, 80, of Decatur, Ind., died at 3:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
She was born May 25, 1927, in Latty, the daughter of Gustav and Maria (Miller) Rager. On Sept. 4, 1955, she married Harold Steffen, who preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 1968. She was employed at the Adams Central Community Schools in the cafeteria for 25 years. She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Bluffton, Ind.
Surviving are four sons, Ed (Denise) Steffen of Bluffton, Ind., Bob (Marcia) Steffen of Decatur, Ind., Ray (Debra) Steffen of Lafayette, Ind., and Kent (Terri) of Huntsville, Ala.; a daughter, Rose (Tom) Rohr of Auburn, Ind.; two sisters, Lillian Schlatter of Latty and Freida Rehklau of Toledo; and 10 grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Carl, William, Eli and Roy; and two sisters, Rose Zeltwanger and Elsie Schlatter.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Apostolic Christian Church East in Bluffton, Ind., with Ron Kipfer and Mark Gerber officiating. Burial was in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Bluffton. Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton, Ind. was in charge of the arrangements.

DANIELSVILLE, Ga. — Kate Flint, 74, of Danielsville, Ga., died Friday, Feb. 15, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 19, 1933, in Paulding County Ohio to Dorris Paul and Myrtle Wilcox Steele, who both preceded her in death. She was a retired customer service manager with Holiday Inn, and a member of the Grove Level Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Flint of Danielsville; five sons, Kenneth (Dannette) Flint of Commerce, Ga., David (Sandi) Flint of Danielsville, Rick (Amy) Flint of Danielsville, Robert D. Flint of Danielsville, and Dennis Flint of Commerce; a brother, Dennis Steele of Antwerp; three sisters, Grace Marshell, Centerville, Ohio, Lee Ann Richards, Paulding, and Vickie Long of Ohio; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Russell and Donna Flint, Paulding; 10 grandchildren, Loren Brown, Kenny Flint, Jake Flint, Jessie Flint, Morgan Flint, Matthew Flint, Anna Flint, Dalton Flint, Tucker Flint, and Bryson Flint; and one great-grandson, Boston Brown.

CORY PRATT
1979-2008
SCOTT — Cory Lee Pratt, 28, of Bedford, Texas, and a former Scott resident, died Sunday, Feb. 10, in Grapevine, Texas, from injuries received in a car accident, along with two other friends.
He was born Sept. 17, 1979, in Paulding County, the son of Stanley and Debra (Zartman) Pratt, who survive in Scott. He graduated from Wayne Trace High School in 1998, where he was active in football and baseball. He joined the Marine Corps in 2000, along with his childhood friend, Caleb Kreisher.
He had been employed for DFW Honda in Grapevine, Texas, and was to have started a new career with Nationwide Insurance on Feb. 11. He was an avid NASCAR fan, dirt bike rider, and enjoyed all New York related sports. He was also an avid Michigan Wolverine fan and enjoyed following the musical performance of his “Texas Brother, and close friend, Justin Ross.”
He is survived by his son, Logan Joseph Pratt of Euless, Texas. A co-worker shared that, “Cory lived for Logan and not just with Logan.”
Also surviving are two sisters, Amber Pratt of Ypsilanti, Mich and Audrey Pratt of Scott; two nephews, Cameron Wilson of Ypsilanti, Mich. and Zaden Chavez of Scott; his maternal grandmother, Jean Zartman of Payne; his paternal grandfather, Joseph Pratt of Scott; his special friend, Lisa Mullins of Colleyville, Texas; and his faithful dog, Sadie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, at the St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Michael Zacharias officiating.
Hours of visitation will be from 2-8 p.m., today, Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert.
Burial will be in the Scott Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by combined posts of the American Legion and the V.F.W.
Preferred memorials are to the family to be used for a trust fund for Logan.

She was born July 26, 1918 in Hamburg, Germany, the daughter of Henry and Margaret Golly. On Dec. 3, 1944, she married Kenneth H. Sutton, who preceded her in death on October 26, 1998. She was a homemaker and a member of the Montpelier Eagles.
She is survived by thirteen children, Betty (Ken) Mertz, Penn., Ernest Sutton, N.Y., Elizabeth (Paul) Swanson, Miss., JoAnn (Dennis) Thompson, Texas, Lorraine Biller, Montpelier, William (Philys) Sutton, Ind. Brenda (Bob) Norling, Montpelier, Russell (Dawn) Sutton, Montpelier, Alvah Sutton, Ohio, Elaine (Jerry) Greene, Colo., Ella (David) Heck, Colo., Eyvonne (John) Harding, Colo., Robert Sutton, Ohio; forty-four grandchildren; and fifty-one great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by four grandchildren, Mark Thompson, Dustin and Jesse Rhoads, and Jennifer Sutton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Charles Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Montpelier.
Visitation will be 4 – 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 and one hour prior to services on Friday, at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding.

DAYTON — James Bernard Baarlaer, 77, died at 4:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at the Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center in Defiance.
He was born July 17, 1930, in Cincinnati, the son of Joseph L. and Eleanor (Taylor) Baarlaer, who both preceded him in death. On June 8, 1957, he married Ellen Marnell, who preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 1977. He was a draftsman at H.C.I. in Stanwood, Wash. He was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Dayton, Ohio and a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Seattle. He was active in his church and community and was an avid photographer.
Surviving are two sons, Richard (Heather) of Dayton, and David (Clare) Baarlaer of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Laura (Neil) Baker of Oakwood, and Barbara (Greg) Lehmicke of Stillwater, Minn.; a sister, Nancy Coch of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death was a son, Doug Baarlaer.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Feb. 25, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Defiance, with Father Tim Kummerer officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Oakwood was in charge of the arrangements.

SHERWOOD — Ben “Jeff” Blankenship, 49, died Saturday, Feb. 23, at Toledo Hospital.
He was born May 6, 1958 in Van Wert, the son of Ben and Martha Blankenship. He was a 1977 graduate of Paulding High School. On Sept. 29, 1979, he married Tamara Laney, who survives. He was employed by Sims Cab in Payne for 21 years until the business closed doors due to moving the company. He then worked at Global Suspension Systems in Bryan, for four years.
He was a lifetime member of Defiance Fish ‘n Game Club, Fort Defiance Deer Hunters Club, and a member of Eagles #2405, Paulding. He loved his family, friends and grandkids. He also enjoyed NASCAR, hunting, and country music.
He is survived by his father, Benjamin Blankenship, Paulding; his wife, Tammy Blankenship, Sherwood; a daughter, Jennifer Blankenship, Van Wert; a son, Brandon Blankenship, Paulding; four grandchildren, Mackenzie, Connor, Landon and Tyler Blankenship and three sisters, Wilma (Ted) Saylor, Convoy, Wanda McCoy, Paulding, and Diana Serrado, Titusville, Pa.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Martha Ann; a daughter, Jessica Nicole Blankenship; a brother, Donald Cecil Blankenship; and a sister, Brenda Lee Blankenship.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Ben Lowell officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

PAULDING – Harvey E. Clemens, age 91, died Saturday Feb. 23 at Defiance Inpatient Hospice, Defiance.
He was born Jan. 29, 1917 in Paulding County, the son of Peter Burr and Martha Jane (Myers) Clemens. He was a lifelong farmer.
He is survived by three sons, Donald (Shirley) Clemens, Tom (Karen) Clemens, and Harvey C. (Susan) Clemens, all of Paulding; two daughters, Martha Baughman, Paulding, and Barbara (John) Peck, Continental; a brother, Alva Clemens, Defiance; a sister, Violet Andrist, Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Peter, James, Joe, George, Ward and William; a sister, Maude Tuohy; and a grandson, Jack A. Clemens.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 27 at Den Herder Funeral Home, with Eileen Kochensparger officiating. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery, Paulding.

WARSAW, Ind. – Harold James Glass, age 92, died Monday, Feb. 18 at Mason Health Care, Warsaw, Ind.
He was born July 23, 1915 in Tipton, Paulding County, the son of Denver M. and Vada (Robinson) Glass. On May 9, 1938 he married Dorothy Schiwietzer, who survives. He attended Pleasant View Bible Church, Warsaw. He retired from the grain business which started at age 8.
Also surviving are a son, Jerry (Linda) Glass, Paulding; a daughter, Janet (Robert) Shull, Warsaw; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roy and Ray Glass.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 23 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Charles Ashman officiating. Burial was in Blue Creek Cemetery, Haviland.

OAKWOOD — Helene E. Lee, 85, of Oakwood, died at 2:55 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Harborside Healthcare in Defiance.
She was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Oakwood, the daughter of Edgar E. and Almina G. (Kretzinger) Rhees. On March 21, 1942, she married Andrew Lee, who preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of the Dupont Church of the Brethren and the New and Better Methods Extension Club. She was formerly employed at the Oakwood Tent Factory and she volunteered at the Oakwood Library.
She is survived by a son, Darwin (Carol) Lee of Ashland; three daughters, Darlene Hale of Bristow, Va., Shirley Zipfel of Defiance, and Teresa Keezer also of Defiance; a sister, Hilda Noffsinger of Continental; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Keezer; a brother, Milo Rhees; and a sister, Lola Tracy.
Services were held Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Oakwood, with the Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial was in the Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Oakwood.

GROVER HILL – Donna L. Phillips, age 44, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
She was born Sept. 18, 1963 in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Thomas and Marcia (Napierala) Phillips. She was employed by Ohio Mirror Technologies in Paulding and was a member of the Paulding Eagles Post #2405 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her mother, Marcia (Jerry) Pagley, Paulding; her father, Tom Phillips, Toledo; a son, Grant Harris, Auburndale, Fla.; a daughter, Alexandra Durfey, Grover Hill; a brother, Thomas Phillips Jr., Paulding; two sisters, Lorinda Allen of Grover Hill, and Barbara (Christopher) Freeman, Toledo; and two grandchildren.

PAULDING – Robert W. Reinhart, age 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.
He was born May 28, 1930 in Paulding, the son of George W. and V. Louise “Sal” (Todd) Reinhart. On Aug. 28, 1952 he married Rosemarie Walz, who survives. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was owner/operator of the former Reinhart Chevrolet, Paulding. He was previously employed by Paulding County Department of Human Services. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paulding, VFW Post 587 and Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council #3584.
Also surviving are a son, Chris (Mary) Reinhart, Paulding; a daughter, Kathy Wherry, New Haven; a brother, Fred (Carole) Reinhart, Tallahassee, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Dick Wilson, Paulding; a sister-in-law, Bev Reinhart, Tempe, Ariz.; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and six great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John J. and Stephen Reinhart and an infant brother; two sisters, Martha Wilhelm and Monica Wilson; a son-in-law, Mark Wherry; and a brother-in-law, William Wilhelm.

WICHITA, Kan. — Donna R. Renollet, 81, a former Paulding resident, died on Thursday, Feb. 21.
She was born Jan. 30, 1927. She married Warren Brown, who preceded her in death. She then married Lewis Renollet, who survives in Wichita.
Also surviving are her sons, David A. Brown of Boulder, Colo., Philip (Alison) Brown of Wichita, and heart adopted son, Ray Gonzales of Haysville, Kan.; four brothers, Fred, Tom, Ray, and Stan Bashore; a sister, Mary Carr of Chicago; stepchildren, Gary (Janet) Renollet, Pam (Darwin) Wampler, Patty (Fred) Snyder and Laura Renollet; grand- and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death was a daughter, June Douglas.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Broadway Mortuary Chapel in Wichita, Kan.

DR. JOHN
SCHAEFER
1926-2008
REDDING, Calif. — Word has been received that Dr. John H. Schaefer, 81, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Oct. 19, 2007.
He was born into a Lutheran missionary family in Madras, India, in 1926. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and following his discharge from the service, successfully pursued a degree in medicine from the Ohio State University.
Dr. Schaefer began his 35 year medical career as a general practitioner in Paulding. He served with the foreign service in Jakarta, Indonesia and with a U.S. military base hospital on Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. In 1974, Dr. Schaefer relocated to Redding, Calif., where he retired in 1985 as medical director at Shasta General Hospital.
An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Schaefer spent many happy summers in northeastern Pennsylvania. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hiking, skiing, camping, and tennis, and was a certified master diving instructor.
He is survived by his children, Kris and David.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Eva Schaefer.

PAYNE – Dolores M. Wobler, 81, of Payne, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 22, at Dallas Lamb Foundation Home.
Dolores was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Defiance, the daughter of the late Edward and Velva (Shirk) Lero. On May 10, 1947, she married Edward Wobler, who preceded her in death on March 6, 1979. She had worked at Permaglass and Haffner’s 5 & 10, Payne. Dolores was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Payne, the Altar Rosary Society, Catholic Ladies of Columbia and Antwerp VFW Post 5087 Auxiliary. Her family is what brought her the most joy.
She will be sadly missed by her sons, Michael (Nancy) of Antwerp, Bernard (Roberta) of Lima, and Francis (Peg) and John, both of Payne; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were her children, Betty Ake and Richard, William and Thomas Wobler; and siblings, Winnie Brady, Paul and Francis Lero, and Robert Shirk.

ANTWERP – Anthony Quinn Bernard, 37, of Antwerp, passed away suddenly Monday, Feb. 25 in a semi vs. pickup truck accident on U.S. 24, near Antwerp.
He was born on June 7, 1970, in Hicksville, the son of Charles and Bonnie (Walters) Bernard. He was a member of Boilermakers Local Union #549.
He will be sadly missed by his father, Charles of Antwerp; mother, Bonnie of Paulding; daughter, Brittney of Fort Wayne; sisters, Toni Katschke of Hicksville, Tina Neer of Paulding and Cheryl Kelly of Fort Wayne; brothers, Chuck of Cecil, Randy of Arthur, Shawn of Florida, and Bobby of Massachusetts.
Preceding him in death were a sister, Tammy Thompson; and two brothers, Greg Bernard and William Gaskill.

MESA, Ariz. – Mildred E Elick passed away Feb. 16, nine days short of her 100th birthday.
She was born Feb. 25, 1908, in Payne, one of eight children of Elmer and Elnora Lehman. She received her teaching certificate from what was then the State College at Bowling Green. The first nine of her 33 years of teaching were spent in Lima, and the rest in Payne. Most of her career she taught first grade, but she finished as a second grade teacher. She married Dorr Elick in 1939; he preceded her in death in 1971. She was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Payne and participated in many social clubs and civic endeavors.
Mildred moved to Tucson, Ariz. in 1974 to join her family. She was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church there and volunteered at the Food Bank. She moved to Mesa, Ariz. in 1997, once again following her family. Throughout her life, she enjoyed traveling and playing cards with friends. She played bridge into her early 90s.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Garza; her granddaughters, Christina Garza and Stacey (Frank) Masci; her great-grandchildren, Celeste and Daniel Masci; and a brother, Harry Lehman of Kentucky.
A memorial service was held at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Mesa. A memorial service also will be held in Payne in May.
Her family thanks all those who sent cards for her 100th birthday. Many came before her death and she appreciated hearing from all.

PAYNE – A. Tyrone Homer, age 67, died Wednesday, Feb. 27 at his residence.
He was born March 30, 1940 in Van Wert County, the son of Walter and Georgia (Custer) Homer. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed by the former Sims Cab, Payne. He was an avid Ham and C.B. radio enthusiast and a gun collector.
He is survived by a sister, Connie Polanco, Payne; a brother, Donald (Joyce) Homer, Waynedale, Ind.; three nieces and four nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lelah Elliott.
Graveside services will be conducted at a later date at Wiltsie Cemetery, Payne.

She was born Feb. 15, 1976, in Louisa, Ky., the daughter of Benny and Sandra (Skaggs) Jennings. She was a member of God’s House of Prayer, Lowmansville, Ky.

PAYNE – K. Lucille Overmyer, age 89, died Saturday, March 1, at the Paulding County Hospital.
She was born Dec. 26, 1918 in Allen County, Ind., the daughter of George and Gertrude (Diver) Laker. On Jan. 28, 1943, she married Richard E. Overmyer Sr., who preceded her in death on May 18, 1999. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Payne, and the Altar Rosary Society, and the Payne Grange.
She is survived by three sons, Richard E. (Ann) Overmyer Jr. Lt. Col. (Ret.), Woodbridge, Va., and Larry L. (Marti) and Terry L. (Terri), both of Payne, a daughter, Pamela Proxmire, Payne; a brother, Roman “Bud” (Christine) Laker, Cecil; two sisters, Pauline Swary of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Leona Molitor, Payne; nine grandchildren, Lindley Ann, Sarah Katherine, Meredith Leigh, Leslie L., Tyler A., Rodney W. and Nathan C. Overmyer, and Mick L. (Laura) and William W. (Kim) Proxmire; and five great-grandchildren, Luke M., Jarod, Garret, Gabriella and Mason Proxmire.

ANTWERP – Rena N. Quisno, 95, of Antwerp, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28 at Convoy Care Center, Convoy.
She was born on Dec. 15, 1912, in Antwerp, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Overmeyer) Tracy. On Nov. 8, 1930, Rena married Clarence Quisno, who died Oct. 24, 1998. Rena was a homemaker and a member of the Antwerp United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Barbara (Howard) Presar of Van Wert and Ruth Snyder of Antwerp; a sister, Doris Toth of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
  Also preceding her in death were a brother, Jack Tracy; and a grandson, Dan Snyder.

ANTWERP — Wanda  Sheets, 95, of Antwerp, died at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born Jan. 25, 1913, in Van Wert, the daughter of Rollie and Goldie (Thomas) Springer. On April 12, 1936, she married Glenn Sherman Sheets, who preceded her in death on June 10, 1995.
 She was the  head bookkeeper for Mercer and Rockford Landmark and Farmers Grain Elevator from 1958 to 1967, and retired in 1975 as personnel secretary at Kroger, Fort Wayne and as a division distributor for Luzier Cosmetic Company. She was a member of the Methodist Church, but spent the last three wonderful years at the Country Inn, Paulding.
She was president of Celina Business and Professional Women’s Club, OSU Agricultural Extension Service for Van Wert and Mercer counties for 18 years, Eastern Star Worthy Matron of Rockford Chapter #152, 4-H leader and a member of the Van Wert and Mercer County’s fair board.
She also had her own band of twin accordions with Gertrude McCain, called the Rhythm Dots. She sung in the Berne, Ind. Mennonite Choir and enjoyed painting. She received honors at the Van Wert Art Show in 1989.  
She will be sadly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Kevin West of Antwerp; brother and sister-in-law, Meredith and Ernestine Springer of Van Wert; two grandchildren, Chad (Mandie) West of Hull, Ga. and Candace West of Warren Michigan.

FORT WAYNE – Marjorie Jean Grant Winners, age 91, died at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice, Fort Wayne.
She was born Feb. 9, 1917 in Oakwood, the daughter of Lawrence and Alice (Gettal) Bidlack. In 1936, she married John A. Grant, who passed away in 1974. In 1984, she married G. Basil Winners, who preceded her in death in 2002. She had been a press operator at Figley Tool and Die, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Martha Club at the church.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Cramer, Fort Wayne; a stepson, Mike Winners, Defiance; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

PAULDING – Charles “Junior” E. Bair, age 77, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday, March 7, at the Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center in Defiance.
He was born on July 16, 1930 in Grover Hill, the son of Austin E. and Margarite E. (Stahl) Bair. On Jan. 15,1949, he married Roberta Merritte, who survives. He retired in 1993 from the former Continental Can Company of Van Wert, where he worked for 46 years. He was a veteran of the Ohio National Guard, serving from 1947-50. He attended the Melrose United Methodist Church of Melrose and the Trinity United Methodist Church of Van Wert.
Also surviving are two sons, Doug Bair of Cincinnati and Dana (Ruth Ann) Bair of Oakwood; two daughters, Sue (Denny) Reinhart of Oakwood and Jayne (Rick) Molnar of Grand Rapids; one sister, Joyce (Marvin) Estle of Oakwood; one brother, Robert (Patricia) Bair of Melrose; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Betty Sherry.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 11, at Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding with the Revs. Tim Burden and Carol Retcher officiating. Burial was in the Little Auglaize Cemetery Melrose. Military graveside services were conducted by Paulding VFW Post 587.

ANTWERP – Frances C. Brooks, 96, of Antwerp, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Monday, March 10 at Hawthorn Court, Paulding.
Frances was born on July 23, 1911, in Hoytville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Charles A. and Ida E. (Bickers) Reynolds. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Antwerp and the Royal Neighbors of America.
Frances will be sadly missed by her sister, Rita Lambert of Antwerp; and a brother, Jim Reynolds of Aurora, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Kilpatrick; and second husband, Homer Brooks. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Kathryn Swann and Theresa Hammer; and brothers, Leo, Bernard and Edward Reynolds.

PAULDING — Connie K. Deatrick, 57, of Paulding and formerly of Defiance, died at 4:38 a.m., Monday, March 10, at the Defiance Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 2, 1950, in Defiance, the daughter of Forest and Eunice (Workman) Deatrick. She was a nutrition specialist for the Paulding County Senior Center. She attended the Melrose United Methodist Church and was a long time member of the former Junction United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her mother, Eunice Deatrick of Paulding; two brothers, Glen (Julia) Deatrick of Payne and Ron (Marita) Deatrick of Ottawa; several nieces; a great-nephew and a great-niece.
Preceding her in death was her father, Forest Deatrick; and a nephew, David Deatrick.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Oakwood, with Pastor Eileen Kochensparger officiating. Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery in Oakwood.

VAN WERT — Phyllis Deane Fast, 96, died at Hearth and Home in Van Wert.
She was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Paulding County, the daughter of Ralph and Cornellia (Chemin) Dangler. On June 29, 1934, she married Gaylord Clayton Fast, who preceded her in death on May 5, 1973. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church for 64 years, making her the longest continual member of the church and the Women’s Missionary Society of the church.

PAYNE — Hobart L. Kuhn, 79, died Sunday, March 9, at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born June 30, 1928 in Payne, the son of Edward J. and Victoria M. (Lucas) Kuhn. On June 26, 1954 he married Mary M. Hake, who survives in Payne. He was a United States Marine veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Payne and the American Legion Post #297. He was a self-employed farmer.
He is also survived by three sons, Hobart Kuhn, Michael (Claudia) Kuhn, and Matthew (Tosha) Kuhn, all of Payne; four daughters, Melissa, Kuhn, Payne, Angela Kuhn, Marion, Ind., Mary Brueggemann, Fort Wayne, and Katrina (Scott) Bauer of Oakwood; a brother, John (Phyllis) Kuhn, New Haven; three sisters, Christina (Charles) Schaefer and Clela (Bill) Sample, both of Payne, and Nila (Ralph) Radenbaugh, St. Helen, Mich.; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony E. Kuhn; a sister, Mary Obringer; stepfather, Leo J. Kuhn; and a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Bauer.

FORT WAYNE – Former Payne resident Marsha M. Conwell, age 76, died Monday, March 10 in Fort Wayne.
She was born July 27, 1931 in Allen County, Ind., the daughter of Marcell C. and Gladys M. (Turner) Gaut. On Nov. 8, 1965, she married Gene S. Conwell, who preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1997. She was a 1949 graduate of Payne High School.
She is survived by her mother, Gladys M. Gaut, Fort Wayne; and two sisters, Myrna (Don) Snyder, Payne, and Miriam Gaut, Fort Wayne.
She also was preceded in death by her father; and a son, Kevin.

PAULDING – Ricardo Lucio Sr., age 75, died at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, March 16 at Hawthorn Court Nursing Home in Paulding.
He was born Sept. 1, 1932 in Laredo, Texas, the son of Antonio L. and Belen (Fierrus) Lucio. On Oct. 7, 1950, he married Emma Curiel, who died on July 13, 1991. On Sept. 16, 1997, he married Barbara J. Fling, who survives. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paulding. In 1989, he retired from GM Powertrain in Defiance after 35 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local #211.
Also surviving are three sons, Ricardo Jr. of Findlay, Rene (Amy) of Wylie, Texas, and Ruben of Lorain, Ohio; four daughters, Margot (Roger) Glanemann of Clyde, Linda (Brad) Bradshaw of Atlanta, and Careena and Maria Lucio, both of Paulding; four stepchildren, David (Kristen) McCann of Northwood, Alan Eddings of Paulding, Wendy (Roy) Klien of Hoytville, and Laurie (Andrew) Billings of Tollhouse, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 15 stepgrandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Antonio Lucio Jr.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today, March 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with calling at the church one hour before services. The Rev. G. Allan Fillman will officiate. Burial will be in Paulding Memorial Cemetery. Den Herder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PAULDING – Duane “Dewey” D. Miller, age 80, died Thursday, March 13 at the Defiance Regional Medical Center, Defiance.
He was born Feb. 5, 1928 in Fort Wayne, the son of Russell and Gladys (Doster) Miller. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a service technician for Ohio Gas Company in Paulding, retiring in 1987. He was a life member of Paulding VFW Post #587, Paulding Eagles Aerie #2405, Defiance Moose Lodge #2094 and the Payne American Legion Post #297.
He is survived by two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Hope Diss, in 1997.
Visitation was held Sunday, March 16 at Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding, where military rites were accorded by Paulding VFW Post #587. Burial will be at the U.S. National Cemetery in Dayton at a later date.

CHARLOE – James E. Wright, age 76, died Thursday, March 13 at his residence.
He was born June 23, 1931 in Lima, the son of George S. and Emma I. (Miller) Wright. On Sept. 30, 1961 he married Jacqueline L. Worthen, who survives. A U.S. Army veteran, he worked at Dinner Bell in Defiance for 30 years, retiring in 1990. He also worked for the former Nickel Plate Railroad in Lima. He was a member of the Junction Bible Christian Church.
Also surviving are one daughter, Judy Woodruff, Charloe; two sons, James Jr. of Charloe and Jeremy of Paulding; two sisters, Della Childs of Archbold and Ruby (Charles) Gillette of Lima; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were held Monday, March 17 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with Pastor Pat Shepard officiating. Burial was in Sherman Cemetery, Charloe, where military rites were accorded by Paulding VFW Post #587.

DEFIANCE — Victor R. Tuohy, 90, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 28, 1917, in Paulding County, the son of Frank and Stella (Price) Tuohy. He married J. Marceile Dimock, who survives. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII. He was employed as a supervisor at Defiance Precision Products, retiring in 1980 after 46 years.
He was a lifelong member of the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Junction. He served as an Auglaize Township trustee for 12 years and was a lifelong farmer.
He is also survived by a son, Dennis of Defiance; three daughters, Carol (James) Birkemeier, Ottawa, Mary (Jerry) Price, and Cheryl (Al) Tennyson, both of Defiance; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow and John Tuohy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at noon Tuesday, March 18 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Defiance, with the Rev. Todd Dominique officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, was in charge of arrangements.

CONTINENTAL – Waneta Gale Skiver, age 95, died at 4:15 a.m. Saturday, March 15 at her daughter’s residence in Oakwood.
She was born Nov. 19, 1912 in Paulding County, the daughter of Abner and Sela (Sanford) Carnahan. On Nov. 27, 1929, she married Perlie Skiver, who preceded her in death on May 8, 2001. She was a farmer and homemaker and a member of North Mount Zion Church, Continental.
Surviving are two sons, Randal (Delores) of Defiance and James (Nelverta) of Continental; a daughter, Kay (Henry) Thomas, Oakwood; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel and Roger; two granddaughters, Joann and Joanna Skiver; three brothers, Rill, Bruce and Curtis Carnahan; and two sisters, Flossie Grime and Jessie Davis.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1912 in Paulding County, the daughter of Frank J. “Pop” and Anna M. (Hopt) Morisy. On June 29, 1941, she married Wilmer D. Rekeweg, who preceded her in death in 1986. She was a homemaker all her life as well as a beautician for many years and also worked at the Paulding County Title Office. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann Thomas, Woodburn, Ind.; eight sisters, Lucille Vsetula of Fresno, Calif., Rita Thompson of Delaware, Ohio, Theresa Thompson of Indianapolis, Rose Marie Guinam of Silver Springs, Md.; Alta (Don) Ebel of Las Vegas, Margaret Ditto of Delphos, Phyllis (Gordon) Porter, Long Island, N.Y. and Monica Brune, Van Wert; one brother, James (Isabelle) Morisy, Paulding; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was born Oct. 20, 1946, in Defiance, the son of Harman and Verna (Forney) Merz and the stepson of Paul and Virginia Budd, who all preceded him in death. He retired from General Motors in Defiance in 2000. He was a member of U.A.W. #211, Sons of Continental American Legion, and the Paulding Eagles. He is survived by a son, Shawn Merz of Defiance; two daughters, Michelle Hilton of Elkhart, and Karrie (Allan) Miller of Ottawa; one brother, William Merz of Florida; a sister, Patricia Montgomery of Okla.; a stepbrother, William Paul Kuhn of Columbia City, Ind.; four stepsisters, Paula Craig of Napoleon, Annette Rohrs of Bryan, and Dianna Brinkman and Emma Shaffer, both of Continental; and five grandchildren.

He was a supervisor for numerous glass companies in northwestern Ohio and a former life insurance agent for Western Southern Life Insurance. He was a member of the Auglaize Chapel Church of God, Oakwood, and a former church board member. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club Auglaize Valley, a member of the Oakwood Homecoming committee and an avid Ohio State, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan. She was born March 5, 1922 in Paulding County, the daughter of Harry and Tina Johnston. On March 16, 1945 she married Harold Hasch, who survives in Kalida. Also surviving are two sons, Rex Hasch, Cecil, and Terry Hasch, Defiance; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roth, Ralph and Jim Johnston; and a sister, Thelma Gunder.

She was born Dec. 4, 1913, in Allen County, Ind., the daughter of Alfonso and Cora (Wade) Foust. In 1932, she married Carl W. Warner, who preceded her in death on March 25, 1981. She is survived by a son, Gerald (Shirley) Warner of Fort Wayne; a daughter, JoAnn Sheets of New Haven; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, and a sister.

FORT WAYNE — Robert W. Scott, 53, died at 12:29 a.m. Tuesday, March 18 at Parkview Whitley County, Columbia City, Ind.
He was born Dec. 18, 1954, in Adams County, Ind., the son of Ralph and Lena M. (Ramsey) Scott, who both preceded him in death. He was an electrician for Superior Essex of Columbia City and formerly employed by Matter Manufacturing in Fort Wayne.
He is survived by a daughter, Aleasa (Adam) Friedley; two sons, Troy W. and Keith Scott, of Fort Wayne; a brother, David (Laurie) Scott, Grover Hill, a sister, Judy (David) Scott of St. Marys; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 22, at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Ben Lowell officiating. Burial was in Lehman Cemetery, Payne. Donations may be made to the United Steel Workers Union.

PAYNE – Harold R. “Bud” Zartman, 84, of Payne, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at his residence.
He was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Payne, the son of Harold and Viola (Matthews) Zartman. On March 8, 1947, he married Marguerite Fullman, who survives. Bud served in the U.S. Army as a TSgt. in WWII. He worked at Midwest Rail for 12 years after 33-1/2 years at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline. He was a  member of the Edgerton Wesleyan Church and Payne American Legion Post 297.
Bud will be sadly missed by his wife; two daughters, Margaret (Stephen) Zartman-Radike of Fort Wayne and Jeraldine Clester of Payne; a son, Kenneth (Carolyn) Sauder of New Mexico; six sisters, Katherine Fegley, Denene Yenser, Hilda Lyons, Olive Dinger, Genevieve Hoaglin and Edie Mills, all of Payne; three brothers, Lennis of Payne, Larry (Carol) of Sherwood and William of Antwerp; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were a son, Robert Sauder; and two brothers, John and Wesley.

FORT WAYNE — Marlene (Kelsay) Due Beatty, 54, passed away on March 17, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, following a long and valiant struggle with cancer. A longtime resident of Fort Wayne, Marlene funneled her passion for helping people through her chosen professions, first, as an interior designer and in later years as a licensed grief counselor and family therapist.
Born July 2. 1953 in Union City, Ind. to Robert and Ruth Ellen Kelsay, Marlene grew up on the Kelsay grain and livestock farm in Fairmount, Ind., where 4-H figured prominently in her formative years. Marlene received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University in 1975 and her masters of social work from Indiana University in 1992. She was the wife of Dr. David Beatty and a member of Paulding First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, children’s church teacher and member of the choir. She co-designed two Fort Wayne Parade of Homes house interiors and was an accomplished seamstress and photographer. As a therapist, Marlene specialized in helping children and seniors gently navigate the bereavement process. She was instrumental in forming numerous regional chapters of Rainbows International, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children cope with the loss of a parent through death, divorce, separation or abandonment. She was a catalyst for the formation of the Alzheimer’s support group in Paulding. Marlene had a great appreciation for all aspects of nature and its power to mend the human spirit. Marlene is survived by her husband, David; her siblings Rodney W. Kelsay (Jeanne) of Indianapolis, Nancy Kelsay Clark (Scott) of West Lebanon, Ind. and Morris Kelsay of Fairmount, Ind.; aunts Alberta Herron of Russiaville, Ind. and Janet Kelsay of Bloomington, Ind.; an uncle, Joe Kelsay of Salorne, Ariz.; sisters-in-law Carol Cowell and Rosann Laker of Paulding; and many cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Russell Due of South Whitley, Ind. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 22, at the First Presbyterian Church in Paulding, with the Rev. David R. Meriwether officiating. Graveside services were conducted Monday, March 24, at Park Cemetery Fairmount, Indiana. Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, was in charge of arrangements. GROVER HILL —Roger E. Rhodes, 82, of Grover Hill, died at 5:20 a.m. Sunday, March 23, at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Continental, the son of Calvin “Roy” and Mary (Myers) Rhodes. On Nov. 28, 1949, in Cloverdale, he married Alma (Pratt) Rhodes, who survives in Grover Hill. He retired from Louisiana Pacific in Ottawa, following 46 years of service. He was an honorary member of the VFW in Ottawa, and was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting. Also surviving are four sons, Manuel (Julia) Rhodes of Van Wert, Michael Rhodes of Scott, Steven (Kim) Rhodes of Defiance, and Ben Rhodes of Grover Hill; four daughters, Jenny (D.Dean) Pruden of Van Wert, Julia (Tom) Wagoner of Grover Hill, Rhonda (David) Topp of Grover Hill, and Claire (Jim) Smith of Scott; 23 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 14 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, three sisters, two grandchildren, Christina Boyd and Roger Topp; and a great-grandchild, Kelli Miller. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, March 26, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert. Burial will be in the Scott Cemetery.

PAULDING – Barnetta Jean “Barnie” Sutton, age 85, died Sunday, March 23, at the Laurels of Defiance in Defiance.
She was born July 15, 1922 in Paulding, the daughter of Charles R. and Amanda E. (Anspach) Miller. On Oct. 8, 1949 she married F. Vincent Sutton, who preceded her in death on April 11, 1986. She was a member of First Christian Church, Paulding; Eastern Star Corona Chapter; John Paulding Historical Society; VFW Post #587 Auxiliary; and Public Employees Retirees Inc. She was previously employed as a nurse by the Paulding County Hospital. She is survived by a sister, Joyce Huseby, and her family, Melinda (Tom) Krick and Eric, all of Paulding; an aunt, Mildred Hoschak, Paulding; a sister-in-law, June Taylor, Paulding; 16 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and cousins.
She also was preceded in death by a brother, Charles “Chuck” Miller. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26 at Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, with the Rev. Greg Bibler officiating. Burial will be in Paulding Memorial Cemetery, Paulding.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 25 and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

DEFIANCE — Elisabeth H. Speiser, 82, of Defiance, died at 2:40 a.m. Sunday, March 23, at the Laurels of Defiance, where she had been a resident for the past two years. She was born Aug. 5, 1925, in Obersdorf Germany, the daughter of Otto and Hedwig (Mogling) Angelstein. On Jan. 14, 1956, she married Floyd E. Speiser Sr., who preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1980. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rock Church in Arthur. She became a citizen on Dec. 27, 1963. She traveled living in Texas, Georgia, Alaska and Kansas.
Surviving are two sons, Ernest (Christy) Speiser of Enon, Ohio and Floyd E. “Jim” (Suzi) Speiser Jr. of Defiance; three daughters, Rosa (Mahlon) Temple and Susan (Kenny) Peffley of Paulding, and Sharon (Robert) Salas of Grover Hill; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also preceding her in death was a daughter-in-law, Penny Speiser; a granddaughter, Amy Speiser; and a son-in-law, Jack (Woodrow) Schultz.

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. – Christine T. Crawford, 93, formerly of Columbia City, died Monday, March 24, at LuAnn Nursing Home in Nappanee.
She was born Dec. 3, 1914 in Latty, the daughter of Clyde and Rosa (Rhoad) Ropp. Her formative years were spent in Latty. Following her graduation from Latty High School in 1932, she moved to Fort Wayne. On Feb. 15, 1935, she married Eugene “Bud” Crawford, who preceded her in death on June 15, 2001. They made their home in Fort Wayne, later purchasing a farm in Wells County. They later moved to a farm in Jefferson Township. Following their retirement from farming, they moved to Columbia City. In addition to assisting with the farms, she worked in the drapery department at Sears for many years and co-owned and operated the Lake Trails Miniature Golf Course in North Webster. Her memberships included Latty Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Melvene Ahlersmeyer of Lafayette and Arlene Simpson of Nappanee.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Cleo A., Glen E., Jerry, Earl and Vern Ropp; and a sister, Irene Mees.

Dilyard of Cecil; maternal great-grandmother, Beulah Dilyard of Cecil; paternal grandmother, Pam Derouin of Upper Michigan; aunt, Renee Schinler of Addison; and uncles, Kelley Ash of Hicksville and Brian (Amanda) Spieth of Hillsdale.

She was born March 27, 1921, in Payne, the daughter of Harold and Viola (Matthews) Zartman. On April 5, 1941, she married Herbert Fegley, who preceded her in death on July 19, 1999. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, NASCAR and Buckeye basketball.
Katie will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Martha (Bill) Martin of Payne and Dawnita (Terry) Lichtsinn of Fort Wayne; five sisters, Denene Yenser, Hilda Lyons, Olive Dinger, Genevieve Hoaglin and Edie Mills, all of Payne; three brothers, Lennis Zartman of Payne, Larry (Carol) Zartman of Sherwood and William Zartman of Antwerp; four grandchildren, John Sroufe and Trent, Brian and Lisa Lichtsinn; and a great- granddaughter, Autumn Weber.
She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Louise; and three brothers, John, Wesley and Harold Zartman.

PAULDING – J.D. Hale, age 77, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 6, 1930 in Lawrence County, Ala., the son of Maburn and Julia Mae (Evans) Hale. On March 30, 1957, he married Harriet Louise Workman, who preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1990. In 1995, he married Carol L. Buckelman Feeney, who survives. He was employed by O.B. Workman Cement/Construction, retiring in 1981, and employed by the Paulding County Department of Human Services for 20 years. He was a member of the Paulding County Sheriff Department Reserve Auxiliary, Paulding Fish and Game Club, Paulding VFW Post #587, Paulding Eagles #2405, and a life member of the NRA.
Also surviving are two daughters, Ellen (Fred) Townley, Paulding, and Pamela (Greg) Frederick, Defiance; a brother, Joe W. Hale, Paulding; a sister, Elizabeth Hart of Dallas; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Evans; and a sister, Dorothy Rhonehouse.

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Virginia C. Heusted, age 81, of Winter Park, Fla., died peacefully on Wednesday, March 19.
She was born Aug. 8, 1926 in Payne, the daughter of Basil and Isabel (Leslie) Heaston. She resided in Livonia, Mich. for 28 years with her husband, Donald, while raising three children. They moved to Florida in 1985. Virginia loved quilting, antiques, history, travel, politics, cats, and her three children.
She is survived by a son, David Heusted, Orlando; two daughters, Deborah Heusted of Orlando, and Melanie Cybulski, Hastings, Mich.; and a grandson, Andrew Cybulski, of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, April 2 at St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding, with the Rev. Joe Allen officiating.

ANTWERP – Nick L. Banks, 60, of Antwerp, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, April 5, surrounded by his family at Community Memorial Hospital, Hicksville.
Nickey was born on Jan. 19, 1948 in Antwerp, the son of Ray and Clarabelle (Quaintance) Banks. On Sept. 2, 1965, Nick married Karen Davis, who survives. He was the owner of Antwerp Sales/Nick’s Nostalgia, Antwerp, since 1978.
Also surviving are a son, Chris (Crystal); his mother, Clarabelle; two granddaughters, Rachel and Allison; and two sisters, Joan Baker and Penny (Larry) Ryan, all of Antwerp.
He was preceded in death by his father; a sister; and five brothers.

She was born June 15, 1923 in Paulding, the daughter of Loren and Minnie (Kemler) Thompson. In 1942, she married Patrick C. Dohoney, who preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1981. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Paulding.
She is survived by three sons, Pat (Laura) Dohoney of Angola, Ind., Jerry (Nancy) Dohoney of Middle Point, and Terry (Mary Sue) Dohoney, Bowling Green; two daughters, Jo Ann Schooley of Paulding, and Mary Beth (Dean) Allen of Novi, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Manz; a granddaughter, Jennifer Dohoney; five brothers, Donald, Richard, Francis, Robert and Carl Thompson; and two sisters, Pauline Sidle and Louise Hesrich.

PAYNE – Former Oakwood resident Howard T. Johnson, 77, Payne, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, March 31, in Dallas Lamb Foundation Home, Payne.
He was born June 14, 1930, in Melrose, the son of Guy and Flora (Thomas) Johnson. On Aug. 26, 1977, he married Eillen White, who survives in Payne. He was a retired iron worker at Fruchey Co., Fort Wayne, and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Twin Oaks United Methodist Church in Oakwood, and a life member of Defiance VFW Post 3360 and the Oakwood American Legion Post.
Also surviving are a son, Troy (Tina), Defiance; two daughters, Jodi Shawver and Cindy (Todd) Smith, both of Defiance; two stepsons, David (Norma) White of Cuyahoga Falls and Devin (Teal) White, Payne; a stepdaughter, Susan (Clement) Skehan, Willoughby; two sisters, Roberta (Ray) Arnold of Texas and Doris (Bernall) Johns, Sherwood; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.
Preceding him in death were a brother, Ed; and a stepgrandson.

PAULDING – Beulah E. Mohr, age 87, died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Country Inn Enhanced Living Center of Paulding.
She was born on Feb. 7, 1921 in Blue Creek Township, Paulding County, the daughter of Sank and Elsie (Timma) Danklefsen. On Nov. 11, 1942, she married Doyl R. Mohr, who survives. She was the co-owner and operator of Mohr’s of Scott for 36 years. She was a 1942 graduate of the Methodist School of Nursing, Fort Wayne.
She was member of the County Chapel United Methodist Church of Haviland and the United Methodist Women Society. She also attended the Beach United Methodist Church of Fort Myers, Fla. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Van Wert Chapter #28 and was deputy grand matron in 1969. She was a member of the Scott EMS and a member of Fort Wayne Air Stream Trailer Association.
Also surviving are two daughters, Lynn (Jerry) Fensler of Defiance and Lois (Richard) Schmucker of Pioneer; one son, Stanley (Myria) Mohr of Paulding; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death a brother, Donald Danklefsen.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 4 at the Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding with the Rev. Paul Miller and Ron Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Scott Cemetery.

ANTWERP – Walter G. “Joe” Ross, 90, of Antwerp, passed away peacefully at 2:49 a.m. Wednesday, April 2 at Paulding County Hospital.
He was born Oct. 19, 1917 in Cecil, the son of the late William Henry and Edith May (Woodring) Ross. In 1939, Joe married Betty Stiebling, who preceded him in death in 2004. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was the owner at Ross Service Sunoco Station, Antwerp. Joe was a member of the Antwerp VFW Post 5087, Hicksville Masonic Lodge 478 and the First Presbyterian Church of Antwerp.
Joe will be sadly missed by his two daughters, Sue (Walter) Schilb of  Antwerp and Jan (Don) Farnsworth of Chicago; two sons, Terry of Indianapolis and William of St. Louis; six grandchildren; 11   great-grandchildren; and  two  great-great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Arl and Francis.
Services were held Saturday, April 5 at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with the Rev. Ralph Klinker officiating. Burial was in Rochester Cemetery, Cecil, with military honors.

She was born Oct. 23, 1962, in Hicksville, the daughter of George and Ann (Erter) Snider. She was a medical secretary at Fort Wayne Neurology and a member of The Chapel, Fort Wayne.
Marge will be sadly missed by her mother, Ann, of Antwerp; brothers, Mike of Auburn, Ind., Matt (Amy) of Findlay, and Mark (Dina) of Cincinnati; and neices and nephews, Adam, Zachary, Allison, Jeremiah, Aidan and Ava.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 8 at Antwerp United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Hawks officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Cecil. Dooley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES BARNES
1932-2008
McCLURE — Charles G. Barnes, 75, a former Oakwood resident, died Tuesday, April 8, at Fulton County Health Care Center in Wauseon.
He was born Sept. 18, 1932 in Paulding County, the son of Robert C. and Sara C. (Post) Barnes, who both preceded him in death. On April 15, 1954, he married Dorothy M. Purdue, who preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 2006. He was employed by Dinner Bell Meats, retiring in 1989. He was a member of Melrose United Methodist Church in Melrose.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Dean) Weasel of McClure, and Tina (Donald) Bright of Amberg, Wis.; two sons, Christopher Barnes of McClure and Leo Mansfield of Goshen, Ind.; a brother, Bernard (Sandra) Barnes of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Thrasher; and his stepfather, Merrel Shull.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12 at Den Herder Funeral Home in Paulding. Burial was in Sherman Cemetery, Oakwood.

LILLIAN CONLEY
1915-2008
VAN WERT — Lillian K. (Hudson) Rucklos Conley, 92. of Hartford City, Ind., formerly of Van Wert, died at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Millers Merry Manor in Hartford City, Ind.
She was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Paulding County, the daughter of Charles and Nellie (Flint) Hudson. In 1935, she married Robert R. Rucklos who preceded her in death in 1960. She then married Paul N. Conley, who preceded her in death in 1965. She worked in retail sales at Merle Brady’s, John Earl’s, and Fisher Big Wheel, all in Van Wert.
She was a member of the Van Wert Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Van Wert Senior Citizen’s Sorority, and a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Van Wert.
Services were held Saturday, April 12, at the Alspach-Gearhart Funeral home in Van Wert. Burial was in the Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert.
Preferred memorials are to the Van Wert Council on Aging.

EUNICE DEATRICK
1919-2008
PAULDING – Eunice A. Deatrick, age 89, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the Country Inn Enhanced Living Center, Paulding.
She was born Jan. 13, 1919 in Melrose, the daughter of the late Orrin and Rosa (Fisher) Workman. On May 30, 1940, she married Forest Deatrick, who preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 1989.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the former Junction Methodist Church and also attended Melrose United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, her dog and yard work.
She is survived by two sons, Glen (Julia) Deatrick, Payne and Ron (Marita) Deatrick, Ottawa; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Donelda Keck, Latty.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Deatrick; a grandson, David Deatrick; six brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral services were
