Survey of farmers using cover crops

Three years of national survey results have now been collected on farmers who no-till and use crop crops. No-Till farming magazine shared these results recently. Around 80.5% of all no-till farmers use cover crops which has been steady, although slightly less than the peak in 2023 at 83.2%. Weather, especially dry weather in the fall and getting a crop established could be part of the reason for a slight decrease in cover crop acres. Also, as finances get tight, sometimes cover crop acres are easy to cut.

Butchering day at the Eichers

We are having beautiful spring weather lately. It sure gives a person spring fever, although it’s really not too long before the calendar says “spring begins”. Yesterday I took advantage of the lovely weather and washed a lot of the bedding along with the usual laundry. It dried so nice and the wind made the bath towels so fluffy for being line-dried. The temperature reached sixty-five degrees and the sun was out all day. The time change made all the clocks jump an hour ahead on Sunday so the nice weather at least helped make the change a little easier.

Van Trump Report

Last week, I presented some free Van Trump report information. Here’s a quick summary. Van Trump thinks interest rates, and the US Dollar will decline which should eventually help US commodity exports. Stock market: short-term unsteady, long-term Van Trump is bullish. On inflation, as energy production increases, expect both fuel prices and inflation to decline. Fuel and freight costs are around 25% of most cost of goods.

Baptismal services held at Lovina’s house

I want to write this column before I leave this morning. Daughter Loretta and I are attending the coffee break our church ladies are having for neighbor Susan. She had hip replacement surgery so this should cheer her up. Everyone always brings a lot of good food and it’s nice to visit before we all go home and start our day’s work. Dustin isn’t working today due to the rainy weather so he will keep a few of their children home with him.

New strip till research

Dr. Jodi DeJong-Hughes has been doing strip till research in Minnesota for the past 20 years comparing it to conventional tillage practices on both corn and soybeans. She says the two most common questions farmers ask about are “Does Strip till allow my soils to warm up and dry out in the spring”, and the second is “Will crop yields suffer (decrease) with strip till.” Dr. DeJong-Hughes as set up her research trials to test those two farmer assumptions.
