Powers and passion collide in Ohio author’s saga of modern-day superheroes

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Long gone are the days when a superhero could simply don a mask and cape, save the day, and then escape to a secret lair. For Abigail Turner, a frustrated, corporate-owned superhero in the city of San Arbor, it’s about navigating politics, satiating story-hungry reporters and boosting her media popularity numbers.

One of the best comics I’ve ever read

A lot of comic book fans might think me a little weird for being a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes. It’s a group whose history goes back to 1958 with members that have names like “Matter-Eater Lad,””Bouncing Boy,””Light Lass” and “Saturn Girl.” It seems silly and for parts of their history they definitely had some silly times. However, in the first half of the 1980s, “Legion of Super-Heroes” was one of the best-selling comic books on the market.

Wild times in Paulding

Have you ever been spanked by a county sheriff or have your breakfast interrupted by a deputy sheriff? Have you ever been told to walk four miles along a state highway and then threatened with felony charges of attempted escape while doing so? Or listened to a friend screaming in agony because he had been shot in the back with a gun? I have. These events and other things were part of my life before I made it to junior high school. Balsamic Roasted Cherry Tomatoes

Like many folks, the hot, dry conditions this summer meant my garden suffered. Several of my plants early in the season were lost to insects. Apparently the bugs were especially fond of my dragon tongue beans. They were eaten down to about an inch off the dirt. My eggplant seedlings didn’t make it much past their first true leaves before the weather got the best of them. Even with regular watering, all of my other plants were pretty much just trying to stay alive.

Balsamic Roasted Cherry Tomatoes

Preheat oven to 350F Spray or grease a pan of your choice based on how many tomatoes you will be doing. I generally use a 9x13 glass pan. You want the tomatoes to be as close to a single layer as you can get. Otherwise when they burst and cook down you are not just boiling them in their own juices and they can dry out. Spraying the pan makes clean up later much easier.

Dealing with Weather & Cutting Costs

For most farmers, the weather has turned dry with corn and soybeans leaves drying down. A good August rain can add bushels to soybeans and help fill out the corn. While some farmers have received adequate rain this year, the weather patterns have been fickle. Most areas are in a drought now. It seems like the same areas get rain, perhaps too much at times while other areas get missed. A good explanation for this is that good growing crops that got early rain are transpiring more water into the atmosphere, generating more moisture in those areas. Whatever the reason, it can be exasperating for those lacking rain.
