Manhunt for fugitive extends to NW Ohio before apprehension (UPDATE)

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating and apprehending a fugitive non-compliant registered sex offender. On February 5, 2025, an arrest warrant was issued for 34-year-old Mitchell Wayne Hephner charging Hephner with 2 counts of level 5 felony Failure to Register as a Sex or Violent Offender.

New Fall Festival announced

When the Flat Rock Creek Festival announced that it was shutting down for good, there were lamentations that September would not see another Fall Festival. Then Heather Sherburn announced on Facebook that she was taking over the planning for a new Fall Festival.

Bird Flu Update

The price of eggs has soared and consumers can blame the Bird Flu virus (Avian Influenza or H5N1 virus). Egg prices may increase another 20% in 2025 before decreasing. Darke and Mercer county had two new outbreaks, 1.4 million birds in Mercer County. Bird Flu affects dairy and beef cattle, swine (hogs), even cats, and dogs. Currently, there are at least 100 million poultry affected by Bird flu and at least 11,000 cases in wild birds identified. . The Bird Flu is especially high in wild bird populations and has been around at least since the 1900’s. The problem is it now has moved into domestic livestock farms.

Pedestrian killed by train in Defiance

On 01/15/2025, at approximately 1315 hours, the Defiance Police Department responded to the Ottawa Avenue CSX railroad crossing in the vicinity of Douglas and Hopkins, to a report of pedestrian possibly being struck by a train. Shortly after our arrival, a body was found. The identity of the deceased is pending notification of the family, and the autopsy report, being conducted by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.
