How I remember 9-11

On September 11, 2001, I was preparing to start my career , but that, as everything else that day stopped. How I remember the day is as confusion among the haste of preparing for the debut of a new book.

Thank you, McDonald’s

On behalf of Paulding EMS, we want to say a special “Thank You” to McDonald’s for generously donating breakfast sandwiches to all of us who were working at the fire in Paulding on Sunday, September 1st. That act of kindness was appreciated by our Paulding Firefighters, Antwerp Firefighters, Payne Firefighters, Paulding EMS, Deputies and Police on scene, and our Dispatchers working at the Sheriff’s Office. The extra boost of nutrition and kindness is what we all needed to keep working until the job was done. There are many benefits to living in a small community and this is certainly one of them!

It’s a nerd thing, you wouldn’t understand

So we were shopping and my loving wife found herself suddenly outnumbered. The two employees that just took our money revealed that they both collected comics. We were bonding, these two, myself, and my daughter that I’m doing my best to carry on the traditions of nerdom. My wife related how I used to own enough boxes of comics to build furniture with them. She then related that she finds it absurd that I’ll buy bagged and boarded comic books and proceed to immediately rebag and board them with my preferred supplies. The two employees completely understood... why I would do that.

The lesson of labor and a higher minimum wage

Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day both rightfully deserve to have their purpose properly acknowledged. However, one holiday with origins that seem most often forgotten is Labor Day, the unofficial end of Summer.

Concerned about garbage bags

I live on the west side of town. I grew up on this side of town. It was always a nice neighborhood growing up. People kept their yards mowed, trash picked up, weeds chopped down, houses repaired, etc. This is no longer the case. I am concerned about the garbage bags that are piling up at a neighbor’s house. I do not know if it’s garbage or other things in the bags. We already have skunks and other small animals running the neighborhood. We do not need somebody putting out an open invitation for additional critters. Why are these not put out for our garbage service to remove? I contacted the health department about this a month ago. The pile of garbage bags continues to grow. This is an eyesore as well as a possible health concern. What does a person do? Who does a person need to contact to get their neighborhood cleaned up? Theresa Hibbard Paulding

A group of Boy Scouts canoeing on the Maumee River east of the Cecil Bridge saw an animal that may be an alligator, hunting along the muddy shores. A wildlife officer reviewed a videotape taken by the Scouts and believes the 3-1/2-foot reptile is likely a caiman.
