Why we celebrate International Workers’ Day

Toward the end of the 19th century, the United States of America was home to many working people’s organizations. Two such organizations, the Knights of Labor and the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (later known as the American Federation of Labor), have competing stories from 1882 about one of their chapters proposing that the first Monday of September each year be observed as Labor Day.

A Call for Compassion: Building Bridges, Not Walls

How has society become so polarized and judgmental? It often feels like we are divided into groups: Conservatives against Liberals, Traditionalists against Progressives, Rural against Urban, Isolationists against Globalists. These dividing walls are breeding a culture of mistrust and dislike for anyone or anything different. We fear the unknown and the uncomfortable, leading even those within the same groups to become divided, each intent on proving the other wrong. While no one seems to relish this division, we live it out every day.

MAHA movement aims to reverse American farming policy

Now that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has kicked off his Make America Healthy Again, or MAHA Commission, food system advocates are wondering which of his ideas will come to fruition. One promise was to revamp the food system with a plan to “reverse 80 years of farming policy.” But what exactly would it mean for the average American to eat like we did in the 1940s? Experts tell Sentient the reality was not as idyllic as Kennedy and his supporters might believe. It’s also not at all feasible, as it would require the U.S. to make drastic changes to the way we eat. To put it bluntly — Americans would have to eat much less meat.

CCAO thanks Ohio House for additional support in many areas of county government

COLUMBUS, Ohio –The County Commissioners Association of Ohio (CCAO) would like to thank the Ohio House of Representatives for preserving many of Governor DeWine’s initiatives in children’s services, child welfare placement cost transparency, regional crisis stabilization centers, indigent defense delivery, increasing the Local Government Fund, and others. Additionally, the House further strengthened the state-county partnership through targeted investments in indigent defense reimbursement to counties, and 9-1-1 funding.
