School report cards show slowing in progress despite other good scores

The State Report cards came out and show all Paulding County meeting or exceeding standards, save one. All three school districts showed a lack of growth based on past performance. Vantage Career Center had an exemplary score, but was measured without the progress metric where the three school districts failed to meet standards.

Youth Business Showcase at Flat Rock Creek Fall Festival

The 2024 Youth Business Showcase proved to be another success with ten business showcase participants attending. The showcase offered a variety of products such as woodworking, paintings, plants, jewelry, bakery items and even power washing as a service of their business. The Youth Business Showcase has proven to show all the amazing talent and skills Paulding County youth have!

How accurate are The Farmer’s Almanac weather predictions?

It is officially fall, and we all know what comes after that. Some of us do not like to think about it, while others welcome cold and snowy weather. I am little left of center, in that I could do without winter if I had to, yet I enjoy a good snowfall on occasion. If it must be winter, I want some snow.

Short corn varieties

Harvest has started and farmers were making considerable progress until the recent rains. Most farmers welcomed the rain since we have been in a major drought. For most corn and soybeans crops, the rain is probably too late but it may help on late or double crop soybeans (planted after wheat) and for new wheat or cover crops being planted this fall. Of course; fruit trees, lawns and other vegetation needed the rain.

It’s hard to move on

I would like to respond to the letter from Friends of Divine Mercy (“This is not over”, September 11, 2024). First, we have had six town meetings on the condition of all three campuses, the churches and other buildings.

One of the best comics I’ve ever read

A lot of comic book fans might think me a little weird for being a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes. It’s a group whose history goes back to 1958 with members that have names like “Matter-Eater Lad,””Bouncing Boy,””Light Lass” and “Saturn Girl.” It seems silly and for parts of their history they definitely had some silly times. However, in the first half of the 1980s, “Legion of Super-Heroes” was one of the best-selling comic books on the market.

Know your 2024 ballot: Issue 1

In an election year in Ohio, there’s usually an issue on the ballot that will change the state’s constitution. In 2023, the issues were abortion access and marijuana legalization. In 2024, an amendment is on the ballot that seeks to combat gerrymandering, the practice of drawing voting districts along party lines to benefit one political party over another.

Northwest State, staff bargaining unit reach new three-year agreement

ARCHBOLD, Ohio – Negotiations between NSCC Administration and the staff bargaining unit (“staff”) had previously reached an impasse, and the process went to fact finding. Both parties accepted the recommendations of the fact finding arbiter and have agreed to a new agreement. The agreement is three years in length, running through June 30, 2027.
