Ohio cropland values and cash rent

Every two years, Ohio State Economist Barry Ward surveys rural appraisers, agricultural leaders, professional farm managers, farmers, landowners, Farm Service Agency personnel, OSU Extension educators, and others on their knowledge of cropland values and cash rents. The latest survey was conducted from January to April, in 2024 with 131 participants. Barry had adequate data for only Northwestern and Southwestern Ohio. So not enough data was collected for other parts of the state.

How to keep your geraniums from year to year

If I were to ask ten people to name a garden plant that their grandmothers grew, I am willing to bet there are a few plants that would be on just about everyone’s list. These particular plants and flowers that have consistently been grown for generations are often called “grandma plants.”

Balsamic Roasted Cherry Tomatoes

Preheat oven to 350F Spray or grease a pan of your choice based on how many tomatoes you will be doing. I generally use a 9x13 glass pan. You want the tomatoes to be as close to a single layer as you can get. Otherwise when they burst and cook down you are not just boiling them in their own juices and they can dry out. Spraying the pan makes clean up later much easier.

Like many folks, the hot, dry conditions this summer meant my garden suffered. Several of my plants early in the season were lost to insects. Apparently the bugs were especially fond of my dragon tongue beans. They were eaten down to about an inch off the dirt. My eggplant seedlings didn’t make it much past their first true leaves before the weather got the best of them. Even with regular watering, all of my other plants were pretty much just trying to stay alive.

Bullying comes in many forms

Wild times in Paulding

Have you ever been spanked by a county sheriff or have your breakfast interrupted by a deputy sheriff? Have you ever been told to walk four miles along a state highway and then threatened with felony charges of attempted escape while doing so? Or listened to a friend screaming in agony because he had been shot in the back with a gun? I have. These events and other things were part of my life before I made it to junior high school. I am going to attempt recalling these events even though they occurred over seventy years ago in my hometown, Paulding, Ohio. The sequence of events might be wrong and some of the details may be missing or even slightly exaggerated, but I assure you everything did happen.

There are ways you can help us

I hear a lot from long-time readers of the paper how much they like their local newspaper. I can assure you that we’re not going anywhere, but we still struggle in the face of all the challenges that newspapers around the country struggle with. We rely on our readers and there are ways you can help us bring more coverage to the area.

Faith and Freed Coalition

A few days ago, my deceased husband received a letter/Christian Voter and Registration Form from the Faith and Freedom Coalition. This group is 100% backing Trump, who my husband never supported. Nor was my husband a Republican.

Homespun: The Name of the Game

Those around the minimal age of senior discounts can still remember a day and age of life without computers, chat rooms and hi-tech entertainment. “Way back then” games, yes, genuine board games, often occupied social outings and taught valuable lessons in the real game of life.
